  • The Cholla Cactus Garden is a 0.25 mile loop trail in Joshua Tree National Park, California that leads hikers through nearly 10 acres of landscape dominated by the teddybear cholla.
The trail is located in the Pinto Basin, about 12 miles south of the park's north entrance.
The garden is known for its endless Cholla cacti, which are also known as jumping cacti.
The cacti are covered in needles and can snag feet and legs. The National Park Service has built a .25 mile boardwalk to keep visitors safe.
The trail is open in spring, summer, fall, and winter. It's flat and made of hard-packed dirt, with an elevation gain of 22 feet.
Some chollas reach out over the trail, so you need to pay attention to where you are going. The trail is family-friendly.
The best time to visit the Cholla Cactus Garden is at sunset, when the last light of the day lights up the cacti's lighter colored tops.
