Her lyrics "Robbers to the East" is Scooter Braun, and "Clowns to the west" is Kanye West. The rest is her doubts that she is enough to give him Peace. I agree EGO is an issue for most of us... as we're extremely critical of ourselves, as we amplify others criticisms over and over in our own thoughts, unable to forgive ourselves or forget. Something I am still working on, at age 72.
You're not alone here with "the song's bringing out a bunch of weird thoughts in me. I don't know why." Many of her songs do that to me. It's the magic that comes with her so precise lyricism. It burrows itself deep inside you and shows itself in deeply personal feelings. Like I say, magical. Welcome to Taylor's world.
One of my favorite Taylor and Joe stories is when they first started dating and the media was being particularly rude about Taylor and it really made her second guess herself and her relationship and she tried to break up with Joe so he wouldn’t have to go through that and he straight up said “no, you’re not breaking up with me” and he deleted all her social media apps to protect her. ❤️
@@sarahcampbell1115 I saw it somewhere on Instagram, I think it was from someone who attended a secret session and she had told this story when explaining a song on rep (I think it was Dancing with Our Hands Tied). I think she’s pretty open about Joe to anyone except the media. I heard she also had a pic of her and Joe as a screensaver they all got to see and when fans asked about Benji (her cat) she said that’s he’s with his dad (Joe) 🥹
Aaron Dessner is a member of the band The National, but works with a fairly surprising amount of popular artists. I was surprised to find he had worked with Mumford and Sons on some of their hits.
She's talking about the press being all around her and the tabloids, saying the rain is always coming to her (meaning the press and others causing shit)
Really enjoy your insightful reactions. Her lyricism on Folklore and Evermore turned me into a Swifty. I'm 43, I was not expecting to be a convert lol but she is truly genius at choosing the words and melodies that evoke powerful, relatable reactions. Another YT creator English Teacher KP does literary analysis of some of her lyrics and songs and it's fascinating. It's the specific pronouns or the verb choice - lots of details - that convey MUCH more than the typical pop song.
the "clowns to the West" line is a play on Kanye West, who has publically attacked and slandered her many times in the press/on social media - she's basically calling him a clown
The guy is Aaron Dessner (founding member of the rock band the National and co-founder of the indie rock duo Big Red Machine, teaming with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon). He, along with Jack Antonoff, is one of the main collaborators in Folklore and Evermore (especially in this last one) as a co-writer and producer (and now he's also involved in a lot of the re-recordings). He's such a nice guy, I didn't know him before Folklore/Evermore (I knew about The National but I didn't know he was there). And same, music has helped me a loooot to deal with my anxiety... and this song was one of my fav since the 1st listening (along with my tears ricochet, august, exile, this is me trying and the last great american dynasty. Also, before this album I wasn't a TS fan at all 😅 but after folklore I was like: ok, let's check some of her songs... and I really enjoy some songs from 1989, Red and Lover... and I loooooove Reputation)
She met Aaron during one of his concerts, and learned about how he and his other collaborators write remotely, when the pandemic happened, Taylor reached out to Aaron and asked if he was writing or interesting in writing. And he sent her a folder of tracks that would turn into folklore.
Folklore is also the first album of hers I really gave a try and it really spoke to me. I've now listened through her entire discography and agree with your pics of favorite albums!
I love The National band which Aaron is a part of. They're musical is stunning. Aaron is the reason I decided to listen to Taylor's folklore and evermore albums and fell in love with her music. The trio are such a great partnership and team 👏
I started to watch your videos yesterday and I just couldnt stop watching all the Taylor Swift reactions. I just like every comment you make, it sound so honest. Also, I like how you pay attention to every detail and its just, idk, I like it. Because being a Swiftie means to pay attention to every detail. I enjoy listening to what you have to say about the song or how it makes you feel. Ive been a TS fan for 13 years now. Im 24 so this means I basically grew up listening to her music and changing and learning and growing, and finding myself through her music. I will recommend you react to every TS song (I swear Ill watch every reaction haha) but specifically Cowboy like me, maybe you wont relate to the song because of the story it tells, and from what I heard you like relating to the lyrics (so do I), but this song is just pure poetry. I cant wait to keep watching your reactions! Greets from Uruguay :)
She has a lot that her loved ones have to deal with. Paparazzi, photos, stupor articles, people making a big deal about things that aren’t a big deal, someone coming after her, her masters, Kanye, hate hate hate everywhere toward her. The rain will always come when you are standing with her, because people constantly come at her. Taylor does not have a team of writers. She is the writer. But during pandemic, in lockdown, she contacted Aaron knowing he writes remotely with his band The National and asked if he’d be interested in a collaborative project (which turned into 2). For the most part, Aaron wrote the instrumentals & Taylor wrote the lyrics and melody. No one writes her lyrics and melody but her. You may like the song evermore which extends upon the concept of her depression in 2016. This is also explored from the perspective of her fiancé in the song Renegade. If you want another really good song about depression/ addiction is forever winter.
The guy she's speaking with is Aaron Dessner, he is a producer of many tracks on both the Folklore and Evermore albums. The other guy is also a producer on the two records, his name is Jack Antonoff.

I really like this one too, it's beautiful and real. 😌 I love the meaning and enjoyed the pre song discussion too - it was really good to hear both their takes on the songs meaning. Enjoyed your thoughts and comments as usual Bryan, thank you for sharing them. 🙂
I think the lyrics “But there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west”, is about Scooter Braun, the robber. He’s the one who bought her masters without her knowledge and the clown to the west is Kanye West which is her arch nemesis. 🤣🤣 That is a clever song writing. 😁
It was super interesting when you started to go deep into what the song made you think and feel. That's what art is supposed to do, probably my favorite video on your channel. I feel this song like Aaron did, I connect to dealing with depression, going up and down and trying my best for my love ones even when I'm not doing very well.
my mum and dad love this song so much they often sing it together while playing guitar or piano it's like they new routine before we watch movie. by the way can you react to her song from lover album 'death by thousands cuts'? it's my personal favourite from the album!
You might align more sonically with Taylor’s “Red” or “Reputation” albums. They have the more rock and hip hop sounds on those albums and the lyrics are still stellar. Great reactions!
I love these reactions to Taylor Swift. I found you when you first started to reacting to BTS. I've been ARMY for a couple of years, but I've been a Swiftie since 2008. I love that you're so honest with your reactions and that you're open minded enough to give music outside of your normal listening genre a chance. I would like to recommend Epiphany and The Lakes.
I just found you from watching your Taylor reactions. I really hope you react to Exile ft Bon Iver, it’s incredible (well - I mean every song of hers is)
I pretty sure the robbers is about her scott B & Scooter and the West is about Kanye which is why she rolls her eyes. But I hope she is done as we all know that he has serious mental health issues so leaving it to professionals is probably best. Other songs/lyrics that hit pretty hard about mental health: Renegade (Big Red Machine featuring TS) - Dealing with people with mental health issues or addicts This is me trying - person who society thinks is constantly screwing up. Seven - The lyrics about hiding hauted home and hiding in closests - I know alot of people prefer to see it as LGBTQ+ view which is fine but as someone who had a period what a bad parent - I can't help but cry at that lyrics and I think in an interview she did say that when she was a kid in PA she had a childhood friend who was going thru but as a 7 years old she didn't knwo how to deal with that or put it into words - so 7 years old solution was to invite her friend to live with her. I love her references to childhood stories like the the little princess. Epiphany - dedicted to her Grandfather on dad's side who served in WWII Pacific (Guadalcanal) but never talked about with his sons & also the all the healthcare works during 2020 who saw so many people not make it thru while in plastic surrounded by strangers. Majorie - Dedicated to her Grandmother on her mothers side, an opera signer who was a star in PR. Soon You''ll Get Better - Mom's battle with cancer Ronan - One fans posting about her 4 year old son. Money donated to research. Forever Winter (from teh Vault) - About friend who is having suidical ideation but didn't make it. Tied Together with a Smile - Friend who is through some stuff. Something to bring you back out of it after all the sad stuff: Hey Stephen Stay Beautiful Mary's Song (Oh My My My) Enchanted Sparks Fly Gorgeous King of my heart New Year's Day I forgot that you existed Paper Rings ME! and Of Course Shake It Off Finally I just love her reasoning but also the presentation that we all have choice to make in live. She is not dictating or saying you should choice one but that you have the choice itself with the 2 bonus songs on Evermore. Right Where You Left Me & It's Time to Go. ( Time to go hit me really hard because it's not something that gets talked about much.)
You paint dreamscapes on the wall (her partner is a film actor) I talk shit with my friends (her diaries literally become songs that she shares with fans)

For me Robbers in the east is about Scooter Braun who bought the masters of her first 6 albums, and clowns to the west is about Kanye West…..
Same here to say this
So that's what it actually means! Thank you for telling me this.

Hozier
Song: Would That I
What it’s about: “It’s about somebody characterising all of their past romances, people that they cared for, as trees they took shelter under, and describing a would-be jealous lover as fire that ultimately burns that wood… But there’s a weirdly elaborate pun in it: “Would that I” is like a way of saying “I wish that I did” It’s a pun on all the wood that I’ve loved.”
Lyrics teaser:
I fell in love with the fire long ago
With each love I cut loose
I was never the same
Watching still-living roots
Be consumed by the flame

Song: The Lighthouse
What it’s about: produced (as the whole album IICHLIWP is) by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, it’s about a woman who was tempted by the devil and then abandoned on a lonely isle, so she turns into a siren and lures in victims.
