Callas has, for me, been the gold standard, when it comes to this aria. But, will anyone be offended, if I say that she rivals Callas here? Incredible tonal quality, strength, smooth, steady, clear as a bell, marvelous diction, emotion, wow, I was moved to tears...she has it all in this performance. BRAVO!
I like her version better than that of Callas. She has the same powerful expressiveness in her voice, but at the same time her timbre is more smooth and beautiful. Great discovery!

She got away from a communist country by marrying a Frenchman. Started almost from scratch , she never much appreciated the power of good marketing.In Poland there were a lot of fantastic singers in the 60s and 70s but it was impossible for them to be famous in the west.One of them was Alexandra Kurzak's mother.
It's not true she got away by marrying a Frenchman. Her only husband was my polish grandfather. :) She got away by achieving several prices and when she won at the ARD competition in the sixties, she got signed at the Dortmund Opera - that's how she got away. I'm not so sure about that good marketing, as well. She was offered a long-term contract at the MET by Rudolf Bing himself, accepted and remained there for 14 seasons. Now if that's not marketing, then I don't know what is. She was pretty known back then.
To MrChowds64, Ms Callas was never the gold standard in this aria, not what we have recorded of her at least, as her voice had already become harsh and unmanageable and many other sopranos outshone her in technical ability at least and not a few in interpretive ability too. I do however think that Ms Zylis-Gara stands a close second to Ms Freni, who for me is by far the benchmark for this role and leaves Ms Callas looking rather forlorn. Bravissima for this performance.
WHAT LANGUAGE IS SHE SINGING IN, WITH SUCH DISTORTION OF THE PURE ITALIAN VOWEL, AND WHERE IS THAT LEGATO? SHE COMPLETELY DESTROYS THE ARCHITECTONIC SHAPE OF THE ARIA. A BEAUTIFUL VOICE WITHOUT ANY CONCEPT OF THE 19TH CENTURY TRADITION, YES EVEN IN VERISMO, OF MESSA DI VOCE.

Mme Żylis-Gara recorded the aria in late 70's, I don't remember exactly.
