124 at 8:11 and 11:02 are sounds of harmonious beauty. Definitely one of the best 3 here. Quite a few of the P42's in the 120's have/had great horns. I still believe when at its peak performance, 122 had the greatest K5LA I have ever heard.
Fantastic video! There were some beautiful K5LA’s in this! My favorites are definitely 1:31, 6:26, 8:11 and 11:03, all beautiful narrow font’s! Although I’m personally not a fan of new raised letter K5LA’s and I think the RL K5LA’s in this video we’re quite unpleasant to listen to.
4:48 is the best one with Amtrak 146. Amtrak 23 at 8:52 is awesome!! # Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits!!!! Way to support the train horns!!! Also NCTD 5001’s raised letter K5LA reminds me of the same time as Amtrak 146’s Raised Letter K5LA. Then, Amtrak 23’s Raised Letter K5LA reminds me of NCTD 5003’s Raised Letter K5LA.
Some of these are quite nasty. Some are overblowing, warbling, flat or the 4A bell is dead. I would've liked all the Raised Letters if they weren't warbling. Besides the horn at 9 minutes, everything from 7:45 onward sounded fairly decent to me. My favourite was 77's Hybrid K5 as it is just pretty healthy sounding overall. 124 sounded amazing especially when going away. The 4A is quite weak on it though allowing the 5 to scream away, so it sounds a bit wheezy on approach unfortunately. I think my favourite K5LA out there on a P42 right now is on 822. The 3A is a bit weak, and 5 is a screamer, but it still beats anything I hear from Amtrak nowadays. It's disappointing what happened to Amtrak 1's horn. It used to sound amazing.
Couldn't disagree more, I think 822 sounds pretty poor. Least it did when I caught it. The 3A isn't just "weak", it's straight up _gone_. Might as well call it a K4LA the way it sounds.
I’m really curious. Can someone explain to me the differences between 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, and hybrid variants of the K5LA? And also which engines or units use each specific version. (Example: P42 vs Surfline Cab Car)
1st gen is a wide font casting, 2nd generation is the narrow font casting, and finally 3rd generation is Raised Letter casting. Those are the different castings of the K series horns. Hybrid K5LA train horns have the 4 bell in place of a 4A bell and a Hybrid K5L has a 3 in place of the 3A bell.
@@PG13hockeyman they can have various types of K5 horns with a low manifold. I know 160, 161, 146, and 53 have a raised letter K5LA. Almost the same chords are played as AMTK 6905 and CDTX 6951. AMTK 56 has a custom K5LA with the 3B in place of the 3A I believe. That being a K5LAM. AMTK 320, CDTX 2123 and 2124 have that horn I’m pretty sure. Things changed a lot on the P42 and P40 locomotives. The Surfliner cabcars didn’t have a whole lot of changes on the horns.
11:02 omg that is just amazing! Especially the Doppler!
Sounds ok
FROP!
You found the original mbta p42 roblox train simulator horn
2:00 beautiful and monstrous

5:53 is my favorite
same here
I love K5LA train horns. They sound SO cool and at the same time, oddly relaxing to me. (Don’t hate, it’s just my opinion).
@Yoonjin’s_Sweetiepie your opinion is respected.
Incredible video!!!!!! I got 199 a few weeks ago, it has a killer K5LA!!!!

7:41 What a coincidence... Amtrak's first and last P42DC running together.
Good eye. Didnt even notice
I know this a 1 year late. But what happen to number 1 i havent seen it running for like almost 3 years
It was wrecked in 2017 after hitting a Snowplow Truck at a crossing.
@@superbaddy4 was it fixed,
No, it was beyond repair.
4:52 Gotta be my favorite out of all of them
It's definitely one of mine
@@sk84lifedb that's the queen of train horns
same x3
Definitely one of the better raised letter K5LA's Amtrak has.
Why does that P42 have an EMD bell?
10:23 is my favorite, P42DC 135's k5la is a killer one for sure
Love 2:00
9:43 best horn ever
Love the hybrid k5las
8:52 Sounds just like a Siemens Charger!
Vishrut Chandra 11:02 has to be my favorite
This one sounds exactly like NCTD 5003. Amtrak 146 sounds like NCTD 5001 due to their horn tuning. Some chargers sound like Amtrak 160 or 180 also.
1st one 138 amazing k5la
nsheritage8105 int thats right
SKProductions Yep well that and 135
5:53 WOW THIS IS THE NICEST TRAIN HORN I'VE EVER HEARD OF
3rd Gen. My favorite as well
That is so awesome!
11:17 that K5LA on 124 tho
That was my buddy JP working the horn that day
SKProductions it sounded amazing
Awesome Video!
Amtrak Enthusiast thanks
I subbed to you for 400 except on my different account "Those Weirdos" Congrats Man!
Amtrak Enthusiast thanks. I subbed back
7:58 Sounds like Siemens Charger Giving the people filming a friendly honk

oh yeah i sorta lucked out with that one. Still one of my top personal favs
@@sk84lifedb I really wish I’ve seen that p42dc in person sometimes since it’s so awesome especially with that horn quill action.
Yes 146 has a good horn but the thing that comes to mind about 146 is that it has a EMD steel bell
@@TrakFilms yes that sure is interesting.
Little cursed if u ask me

Same!
Epic!
CSX453 thanks bro
Np!!!
Only if we could convince Nathan would make 1st Gen K5LA's again.
And narrow font’s.
1st generation is the wide font K5LA train horn.
Lots of Raised letter 3rd Gen K5LA's.

+RailfanDaniel Just caught 85 which still sports and epic 1st gen!
I disagree with this comment, none of them sound nasty to me at all. the title describes some of the best K5LAs
#1 is perfect as is. It sounded GODLY with the doppler!
158 has the best horn. Its sounds so good

Why do the P42's sound like jet engines when leaving? The horns are awesome!
You're probably hearing the turbo charger spooling up.
@@TrainTrackTrav That's the turbocharger. They refer to it as "turbowhine".
7:54 2nd Gen K5la hybrid. Maybe.
Is this Ashland?

Some of the older horns sound like brass jazz Benny Goodman style
Not some of them Some of them may be sick K5la horns
SOME OF THOSE ARE NO DAMN K5LAS
Yeah i know. Read the description next time
Some are hybrid k5la so it may sound different
