King Crimson, if they wanted, could have easily been one of the most succesful mainstream 80s pop groups ever and for a time honestly tried to. This shows the power and the courage of the band to constantly change.
Totally agree…even greater than the Police. My understanding is that Beat was the 3rd of three albums that Ribert Fripp wanted to make during that period and I think he turned off the spigot himself.
It received major airplay on the Los Angeles "alternative" station, KROQ. Their decision to put this, and Neal and Jack and Me, into regular rotation was the reason I purchased the album from Vinyl Fetish Records on Melrose back in '82.
I think it's because they kept on writing weird dissonant music aswell. I'm not sure but i don't think they marketed this to a new and fitter audience for this sound, either. You know, like touring with Duran Duran or somwthing. At the end of the day, they made even weirder music afterwards so i guess it wasn't such a bad thing to not go full mainstream at the 80's as their true thing was always more experimental stuff

Imagine introducing someone to King Crimson with this song.
This was my song for my wife. Everything about it resonated with how I felt about her. Beautiful and that sense of longing was so powerful. She’s been gone now for almost 7 years and this song still brings me to tears thinking about her. I’m 68 and know that I will see her again soon.
@@rotunda_ Yeah, what is it with these "underrated" comments I seem to see all the time? It seems to mean "I know about this band/film/track but nobody else has heard of them." Which is not true either.
@@hundovir Underratedness is a ratio between relative skill and popularity. King Crimson's skill is 10/10. Their popularity is around 2/10. Therefore they are extremely underrated. They should've been selling out massive stadiums like their rock band counterparts from the 60's-80's. But they never did. They never had any hit songs. Their only hint of popularity is their first album, which isn't even their best. It's shameful and tragic and I have no idea how you fail to see that. Ask 100 random people on the street of a random street and chances are none of them have heard of King Crimson.
@@ash_11117 Thanks for the response, but I think you are confusing popularity and "under-ratedness" despite your equation. A band is underrated when people who know of them give them a low rating. If people have never heard of them then they can't rate them at all, either highly or lowly. I admit that the definition of "underrated" does seem to have changed in recent years. (By "recent" I mean the last 20 or so.) So maybe your definition is now the "correct" one. Edit: I think what you call being "underrated" is what I would call being "underappreciated". I don't think they are the same.

Cause they are crimson and 80s are not they are in the untouchables category . it was too intricate regardless of pop sound . they weren't trying it just happened that way
jojofans i'm predicting this song to be acca howler stand name but instead of just being "heartbeat" it's going to be "earthbeat" due to the possible ability of the stand and just the overall theming of part 9
I want to feel your heartbeat. Sounds like cheesey 80's shit. No wonder KC went nowhere in the 80s. And this has a very 80's production to it. Not one of KC's best.

Payola. They would've been at least as big as the Police maybe or Tears for Fears had the record companies wanted to push them.
Totally agree…even greater than the Police. My understanding is that Beat was the 3rd of three albums that Ribert Fripp wanted to make during that period and I think he turned off the spigot himself.

I introduce people to King Crimson by showing them this, 21st Century Schizoid Man and LTIA Pt. 2 back to back and telling them it's the same band.
