  • How Iceland's Deserts Are Turning PURPLE
How Iceland's Deserts are Turning Purple! Climate change is a thing!
an invasive plant is taking over the deserts of Iceland, turning them purple.
Lupinus nootkatensis-known in its native Alaska and British Columbia as the Nootka lupine- is a pea family member. This plant is of utmost importance when talking about the nitrogen cycle, as it is a nitrogen fixer. Lupine has bacteria that accumulate nitrogen from the air and transfers it to root nodules. The nitrogen is then released into the soil, which is essential for the nourishment of plants.
Before we dig deeper into Lupinene, let us tell you the fantastic background of Iceland's landscape.
However, the project failed miserably and left a persistent purple stain over Iceland. Lupine poses a threat to the existing vegetation and the arid interior of the volcano.
The bleak shoreline would hardly have been recognizable to the early settlers when the government established the Icelandic Forest Service in 1908. Iceland had already suffered "the most severe ecological harm in Europe" by that point. When other European countries began recovering from World War II in the middle of the 20th century, the Icelandic Forest Service was considering a new form of human-caused destruction, i.e., overgrazing and loss of green-belt. Because of how severe the damage was, the agency began looking for answers elsewhere. They dispatched Hákon Bjarnason, their director, on a three-month journey to Alaska. He was responsible for picking trees and plants that he thought would do well in Iceland. Hence, the lupine odyssey began on November 3, 1945, the date of the returned stamp in his passport.
The guy just brought 2 tbsp of Alaskan Lupine, and those two tablespoons are responsible for all the Purple on Icelandic land. Lupine spreads like a contagious disease as a plant with 25 flowering stems can provide up to 2000 seeds in one season. On flatlandLupinene expands around 1-3 meters annually, and in steeper areas, the spread rate is much higher due to wind, rain, and slopes. Iceland has many windy regions, making it a perfect place for plants like Lupine to nourish and reproduce.
Bjarnason knew what he was bringing to his country. Due to the nitrogen-fixing capabilities of oLupinene, areas with poor soil quality, like Iceland Lupine, can be used to restore the soil. Lupine is not only beneficial for soil and turns barren land into a planted space, but also it enhances the beauty of the land. Compared to grass, Lupine is way more economical and also a fertilizer.
Everything still sounds fine, but now debates have started to ramp up becausLupinene is not native to Iceland, and it has its drastic impacts on native plants. Lupine covers 0.4% of the total area covered by Iceland. Sound like a small number, but now compare it to the fact that only 1.5% of Iceland is forested, and now it makes a considerable difference which means that in future Lupinene can potentially take over almost all of Iceland's surface, which currently grows native species o plants.
Not only is it harmful to native plants but also to animals, especially European Golden Plover, which feasts upon native plants. Iceland cherishes this bird a lot; any damage to its habitat would be unacceptable for the country's masses. Lupine plants also have enormous potential to edge out existing flora in Iceland and spread into the highland interior, which is too cold and dry for most plants. This naturally occurring lunar landscape could, in other words, disappear. Hence its ungoverned growth is not beneficial but a vital danger alarm for the authorities.
Every Icelander has now taken because of a purple field. Many people also enjoy lupines. The Lupine's allies are particularly fascinated by before and after pictures. Some laud the flower's abilities as a reforestation tool, claiming that trees planted next to lupines benefit from the enriched soil. Trees shade out the nearly foot-high flowers once they reach a specific size, and during the following 25 to 30 years, the lupines will naturally wither away as soon as the soil is rich enough for other plants to flourish.
With that, it is time to wrap up today's video!

Vikings, 1000 years ago Iceland was in midst of Medieval warm period..... easy blame Vikings, but society knowing a land us finite would certainly reforest and plant trees for timber, fuel wood production. Vikings were many things, stupid nit one. Iceland is difficult to reforest...its COLDER Now than was back then. Another is soil quality..... which is amendable with fertilizer. Composting toilets and urban made use municipal sewage, restore soil carbon trees need to thrive. By use, Composting is thermophilic thus raising soil temperature will increase productivity.

So, try and regulate the stuff in places it is competing with native plants, try planting native plants to compete with it in the land it has made arable, then make SURE that "lunar landscape" gets gone, as those used to be heavily forested. As much as people like talking about how good it is to have different ecosystems, the current deserts on Iceland are essentially non-ecosystems, so anything is better than that. It is a tool you have to be careful using, but it is the tool you need right now.

what natural ecosystem?😁.... it was nothing but a desert wasteland, and as soon as you start planting trees, they will disappear... and that was the original plan
