I've ridden my bicycle up Palomar maybe 100 times and I know that turn extremely well. I used to have motorcycles ripping past me on my second climb up most Saturday mornings. Now I'm on a sport bike and I've done Palomar once. Maybe in the future I'll rip up Palomar but I remember seeing two motorcycle crashes up there. That's no good but this is a good video!
I get why people say take it to the track but honestly track days ain’t cheap and most folks I know (myself included) take our sport riding to unpopulated back roads. If one of us crashes we only endanger ourselves. One of the dudes I know that rolls on his r1 is a cop. I’ve also been on plenty of back roads hitting twisties hard and cops have been present. They’ve flashed their lights at us if we’ve gotten too crazy but never pulled over. They realize we’re having fun and there isn’t any traffic on the roads we roll on so they understand. Sure it’s dangerous but nobody buys a motorcycle to not speed. Doesn’t matter if it’s a sports bike or not. Hell my cruiser can keep up with/surpass some sports bikes. I get when folks cut through traffic on the highway at 180 plus that is nuts and endangering folks but sport riding on unpopulated back roads I don’t feel is a problem only for the riders involved should someone go down.

You could hit pedestrians, cyclist other motorcyclists or cars. Yes there are better and worse places I agree with you there. I dont obviously know your riding and your roads (you might be fine) but I have thought exactly like you and been very surprised that what I perceived as no risk nearly killed someone. Because it turned out unusual things happen in the real world that you simply cant predict. That was a rude awakening. Dont think this is 100% anything. Leave room for reflection and review.
Palomar mountain is not an unpopulated back road. Sometimes it's dead like in the vid but it gets shut down due to accidents all the time since it's listed as one of the top 10 Twisties in the US. People routinely ride hours just to get there.

Yeah yeah yeah, _hell yeah_ Willing to _fight_ and _if necessary, die_ to live in a free country. Just wish I could do it all over again. And for all who served and sacrificed for American Ideals and basic human freedom for the past 250 years: Oh beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife Who more than self their country loved and Mercy more than Life! I remember when saiyin posted the vid and asked what folks thought he did wrong. Seemed like he went in too hot and didn’t realize it was a decreasing radius curve so went wide. Happens to the best of us. I followed a dude on a twisty road here in Texas called lime creek. Same thing happened to him. I have it on film. Blind right decreasing radius curve he went into oncoming traffic lane. Thank God nobody was coming the other direction. He would have died. Knowledge of the road always plays a roll. On unfamiliar roads I scale it way back until I gain familiarity with the road. He recovered nicely. Stay with the brakes. I’ve had to do it and it’s saved me.
Nice attitude of Saiyan not thinking he knows it all already..in fairness he is the fastest in the Canyons and i bet he will be quicker applying the things he learned fron you Sir Greg..priceless riding tips which is a gift for me this Christmas!!❤❤❤❤
Great tips! Have you noticed yourself subconsciously analyzing the terrain to figure out what kind of turn is coming up? For example, if I see mountain on both sides of the road, it’s typically a straighter corner, but if I only see mountain on 1 side of the road, I know I can expect a 180 degree turn coming up. Does that make sense?
Yamaha says "Speed equals radius" (or vice versa- it's physics). I try to do the "outside-inside-outside" to make the radius as big as possible and to see as much of the corner as possible. I never go as fast as I think I can go). Thx!
Well done not succumbing to Target fixation. However, way too fast going into a corner that you have no idea how sharp it is, plus making little to no attempt to counter lean and keep the bike more vertical. Dude, it's beautiful scenery. Enjoy it! Learn to go fast on a track.
I can see how a rider would follow the road a bit more, especially when they are not familiar with the road. I have done the same on roads that are new but once I know the turns, I adjust my lines to be more efficient.
180 deg corner around the small lookout on Palomar Tight Side. Had a kid low side a CBR 600 right in front of me. I had a narrow path ( moving target ) between him and his bike. I ended up ( upright ) in the adjacent parking lot.
Knowing the road does not mean go faster as you don’t know what deer or other nightmare is around a blind corner ……. Last week in UK the front of a bus (greyhound in USA) had been smashed by a medium sized deer and was unusable. The deer was splattered …….
Would it be correct to summarize cornering like so: In public, as short distance leaned over as possible for safety reasons but on track it depends on the power of the bike you ride; not powerful - carry as much speed through the turn as your skills let you, but on a powerful you want to do go for the more V-shaped corners that you do on the public roads?

Good that he saved it and everything but this sort of riding doesn’t really fit with all the talk about responsibility on the rest of the channel.

I thought that too. Line was poor. Wide goes narrow and narrow goes wide. It’s physics.

That was a super visually tricky turn. I'm not sure what it was/is, but for some reason it didn't look nearly as tight as it is.

Normally ride at 50_70 % of my ability on the canions. Guves margjn for error .track days to extend that limit .
