A video about the do's and don'ts of self citations would be cool. There was a recent scandal where the impact factor of one of the biggest mdpi journals was taken away. That journal publishes 17000 papers or so per year. So you you can essentially buy a journal publication for 3k to boost your CV (on the first look)
This is the most jaded view of academia but it’s understandable! I’m hoping that I have a happy lab and a happy work environment for my future students despite the pressure. I’m a stubborn fighter. I won’t compromise those pressures on my students. I want to have their back and be their rock, too! (I.e. extra effort on my part but I love this job)
Meanwhile, here in Germany, they just say the quiet part out loud. Well, at least my PI does. The man is a titan in his field, but he does not hold back.
Yep. Especially the "I'll get back to you" If you're chockablock then just tell me it'll take 6 or 8 weeks to come back. That's perfectly fine. But don't make me ask for an update every week.
@@gamingmarcus my PI just says, "I don't have time for that. Please speak with someone else". In the moment, ouch, but at the end of the day, that directness is a good thing.
Hey there! Could you also make a video on 1) scandal around MDPI journal 2) "secret code" of recommendation letters? (I don´t know if it´s everywhere the same but it is common here in Germany) Thank you so much! Love your videos
It is the reality in action in academia. I laughed a lot for "quick experiment". Really, thanks for putting a smile. I think academia might be in a big trouble on the long run. The huge number of publications in any field every day and to keep your focus and to deal with other illegitimate behaviors, what a world. Thank you. Mohamed
Hi Andy! This comment is probably totally irrelevant to the content of this video but... Just wanted to thank you. I just had my confirmation milestone today and passed it very successfully. Your videos definitely helped in the process. Especially about organising the research and making the presentations continuously. It was the consistency that you constantly talked about that helped me to do this milestone relatively easily. Just wanted to give a huge shout-out and thank you for the videos you put out. It 100% works.
Andrew, love your videos. It has been an inspiration for someone who got his PhD literally at the age of 50! Yes. And your words resonate. Looking forward to read your books.
hilariously fun :D Thank you for so many tips on responding - I have learned many new ways of "doing" research :D Self-citing is my favourite discovery of this day!
I love trying to find any excuse to increase the uncertainty of variables in that scenario to get some chunky error bars that can imply whatever the hell I want them to, blaming resistor tolerance is my favorite go to for electronics.
Great. You should do this on submission status as well: “under review” = I cannot find a soul out there who is willing to review this paper, however I set the status to “under review” so as to not get bothered, why it indicates “with editor” for three months 😂
Haha. One of my professors built an Arduino Microkernel and published a paper saying it was the first Arduino microkernel. It only took me about 5 minutes to find an opensource Arduino microkernel that had been around for over a year. I let him know about this expecting praise for correcting his error, but it was the one time he ever totally ignored my feedback.
Your 'trend' bit had me on the floor laughing!! Brilliant episode. I have a lot more appreciation for the trials and tribulations that researchers face.
Hello, I heard about a different type of PhD proposed by the European union it is called Marie Sklodowska Curie Action (MSCA) I don't know if you have some informations that we can't find on internet but it would be really interesting to know your point of view on that kind of PhD. Thanks in advance.
First of all, you've extrordinary methodology and actually I'v never been seen as your magnificent behaviour that made me surprised. Secondly, how Can l communicate with you. I'm from Iraq. Thank you for your flabbergast great efforts and I could n't discribe those unbelievable moments.
Hahaha now I understand my supervisors better 😅 but I have a video request about intellectual rights when doing a phd I’m planning to file a patent of my mechanism but I’m wondering if that would be against the university policy what suggestions do u have ?
Funny, I constantly fought the use of these phrases and often just deleted them if one of the co-author tried to sneak them in. But it is hard. Some co-authors are just dickheads. Another good topic is reviewers, at least one of them is always making a complete fool of themselves by showing their lack of stats (in the medical science fields usually)
Once upon a temporally nuanced precipice, amid the multifaceted confluence of cogitation and hermeneutics, there transpired an epochal narrative, replete with intricate figurations that espoused the esoteric depths of epistemological inquiry. The metacognitive cadence, ensconced within the syntactic tapestry of the tale, unfurled its veritable mosaic of ponderous quandaries, resolutely evading facile comprehension. At the apex of the hermeneutical precipice, an erudite savant, ensconced within the labyrinthine corridors of intellectual prowess, embarked upon a foray into the abstruse recesses of theoretical metacognition. Armed with the cognitive weaponry of epistemological acuity, the savant endeavored to traverse the intricate skein of conceptual intricacy that enshrouded the salient issue at hand. The narrative, ensnared within the labyrinthine intricacies of post-structuralist discourse, disseminated its semiotic web with meticulous precision, ensuring its profound inscrutability to those devoid of erudite perspicacity. Every textual effusion was crafted with a peripatetic lexicon, replete with Latinate etymologies and an amalgamation of neologisms, meticulously interwoven to obfuscate the faintest flicker of clarity. As the narrative unfolded its lacunae-laden tapestry, the uninitiated souls, ensconced within the limited confines of a high school education, were left floundering amidst the syntactic wilderness. The intricate interplay of deconstructionist signifiers, Foucauldian power dynamics, and Baudrillardian simulacra formed a dense thicket of inscrutability, impervious to the cognitive faculties of the untrained mind. Verily, the narrative stood as an impenetrable citadel, a bastion of intellectual preeminence, safeguarded by the impenetrable ramparts of polysyllabic diction and labyrinthine syntax. To venture into its intricacies without the scaffolding of comprehensive erudition was to court cognitive perdition, forever ensnared within the labyrinth of insurmountable opaqueness. Thus, this narrative, shrouded in the cloak of indeterminate signification, remained an enigma, an esoteric paragon of intellectual hermeticism, forever beyond the grasp of those confined within the boundaries of high school education, serving as a testament to the vast chasm that separates the uninitiated from the lofty echelons of academic prowess.
I am completely convinced that there is a quadzillionaire sheikh out there who would immediately give a billion USD to an academic who does not use academic jargon in his papers. He would give 2 billion USD to an academic who uses the "translations" you provided. p.s. The papers get reviewed if you subtly threaten the professor with the dean.
Hey Andy, Can I get your LinkedIn handle/profile? I want to share your video in my network, tagging you on LinkedIn. Man... You nailed it!! Straight to the point. Hats Off..

I think it already started, I read a thread of exchange sometime back. Two camps, one exposing the ills and the other vehemently definding it.
I love this guy, he decodes the academic decipher.. thank you dude!

Here we go. Tone it down Andrew, you're getting angry again.

“ my entire life is a lie if this isn’t a straight line” 😂😂😂😂😂
"Ahh yeah, I can see the trend" ~ me writing a report for a botched lab experiment and need to make the results align with the theory somehow.
