Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon - one the great movie duos of all time. They would become most famously known as the original “Odd Couple”, but these two weren't so different after all, and were actually very much in sync. Their comedy partnership spanned close to four decades, making them one of the longest tenured comedy acts of all time. We take a look at what made them such a durable act and why their partnership was so great.

Thank u I’m watching the fortune cookie right after I finish this...
that premise needs a remake. I’ve got a lotta ideas and good on you for leaving it with a “I won’t spoil the movie”.
@@videovoidtv Thanks for watching!
I have temporarily removed my patreon because of corona and the new financial situation for my family. But if I could give you a suggestion I would say Sherlock Holmes smarter brother. I understand logically that it is not a great film, but emotionally it is my favourite film of all time together with Young Frankenstein (both written by and starring Gene Wilder).
They also appeared together in Ensign Pulver
Hats Off Entertainment I like the content. Keep it up
Fun Fact: They're buried about 100 feet from each other in Westwood cemetery.
good to know....hopefully, they are closer than that elsewhere.
And both near Billy Wilder.
Good to know that they are still bickering and throwing one-liners back and forth at each other for all of eternity. 🙂
Well, it's a fact,
don't know if it's so much a fun one
Jack's gravestone is inscribed:

In addition to the films mentioned, both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau had shared a brief scene together in the film adaptation of Truman Capote's novel, "The Grass Harp" which featured an all-star cast including Piper Laurie, Sissy Spacek, and Mary Steenbergen. The film was also directed by and starred Charles Matthau who was Walter's son.
I remember hearing Jack Lemmon's son jokingly saying that if Matthau had learned to play golf then Lemmon would've married him. They were closer than most brothers
That is true..The friendship that they had..They were like brothers..there was a genuine love and respect that Jack and Walter had for each other and for their work..I was lucky enough to meet Mr.Lemon in NYC..years ago..I met him outside The Martin Beck theater..when he was appearing in"Tribute"(which also featured another cast member of"The Odd Couple"Movie..Mr.Larry Haines)Jack was wonderful as "Scotty Templeton"..and he was a sweet and kindly gentleman..(Crying)I still miss him and Walter.
@@kevins.butler3402 you weren't lucky enough to spell Mr. Lemmon's name correctly tho =P
He should have married him anyway. After all...
"Nobody's perfect!" 😊
The chemistry they had together is very rare. They were comedy gold. They almost didn't need a script. They were that dam good.
Grumpy old men, Grumpier old men, and Out to sea were my introduction growing up to this amazing dynamic pair. They are some of my favorite films.
Same. I will still drop everything to watch them when I see any of the movies on tv.
Gold, pure comedic gold, such a fun pair of guys!!!
Me too
"they say the big ones swallow you whole"
"Swallow my what?!"
Out to sea is great
Jack Lemmon is one the greatest actors ever. Walter Mathau’s quick wit and dry humor is fantastic
You do realize Matthau has a Oscar, golden globe, BAFTA, and even 2 Tony's right?? They both brought an amazing acting sense to the screen that is probably why they played off each other so well.
Jack was lucky enough to get both comic and serious roles in movies and was very impressive in either role.
I don't care who you are or how old you are; Jack and Walter were pure magic together, and transcend all ages, races, etc. One of the all time best duo. I never get tired of watching their movies.
I’m so glad there’s still people out there showing respect to these 2 legends. I just rewatched grumpier old men the other day and loved it. The 2 of those movies were my childhood favorites, I’m lucky I was introduced to them, not many from my generation know these 2 greats.
"Up yours, Gustafson!" ruclips.net/video/0TRUnJ5JlYw/видео.html
Rarely do I wish a duo did more together but I would've loved 50 movies together. They're perfect together.
Trivia: Lemmon and Matthau were both on Oliver Stone's JFK, but they never got to share the screen together
I totally agree... they were a great team.....sadly missed - RIP Walter and Jack
I miss this guy's you don't see comedy's like this anymore classic
These 2 were definitely Hollywood's greatest couple Actors!
Both these men are sorely missed by me and millions of fans throughout the World!!
These 2 are entertaining Heaven for sure. No one can replace these 2 awesome people.
I grew up with Walter Matthau in The Bad News Bears and watched every movie he and Jack Lemmon starred in. Really miss these 2.....
I've seen Buddy Buddy as a kid! I loved it so much, after seeing it, Lemmon and Matthau became my favourite actors. It's a pity it's been forgotten, IMHO.
Yep its great! I still have it on VHS tape ; )
These two guys are a national treasure! Anything that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are in is pure comedy gold! I have always been a big fan of their collective films and their individual ones. Thanks for all of the laughs fellas.
I never knew I wanted a channel like this until I watched! Love what you are doing here!
"Gustafson, YOU SCHMUCK!" is one of my favorite sayings
You Putz !! 😁😁
I live to watch these 2 together! Grumpy Old Men and it's sequel was hilarious. I watch their movies whenever cable plays them.
It's a bit weird, but one of the things that I'm grateful for (beyond their work) is that 1) they were hip and popular and heavily-employed in the 1990s, so their last decade was also one of their most productive, and 2) both men died before 9/11. Lemmon almost made it there too. I can't imagine what it would've done to them to see that at the end of things. They ended on a high note and didn't see it end.
wtf does 9/11 have to do w this?
@@____toomuch____ Just a timestamp.
They are charismatic to the highest degree, and had effortless humor coming out of every pore. Classic content right here! Keep it up!
Thanks for watching!
I have very found memories of these movies from when I was a little kid in the 90s.. now I know that there are a few more that I haven't seen yet, great!
I love these guys! They're one of my all-time favorite comedy teams! I enjoy their movies both individually and collectively! They're both a national treasure! There will never be another pair like them!
I recently found a PAL dvd of Buddy Buddy from Spain, was about to get it but then I saw a CED version and had to get it. Feels like the most appropriate thing: to watch a forgotten film on a forgotten format. I am glad I saw it. It is an interesting sit.
Grumpier old men is one of my all time favorites. On another note, Jack Lemmon in a movie called "The Great Race" his character professor fate is hilarious and it honestly tells me that Jack could have been cast as a DC villain. I personally think he would have made a fantastic Joker or other similar lunatic villain. He definitely has the laugh for it and the energy.
The Fortune Cookie is a seriously underrated movie.
So is Buddy Buddy.
@@lookbovine Only watched that one once. It's probably time to revisit it.
I know right! I want to adapt it into a play so badly.
Out To Sea is so underrated imo! It's a movie that I grew up with because my parents found it in a $5 bin somewhere when I was a kid. As an adult I've loaned that same dvd to several people and they all come back with positive reviews.
Absolutely love these guys. I own " Buddy, Buddy " from 1981, and it's a classic. There has never been a greater comedic duo and that's coming from a fan 3 generations younger than they were.
I honestly love how I’m not the only person in my generations to love and appreciate Walter and Jack I used to watch the odd couple and grumpy old men 1-2 with my dad growing up and loved them since
Buddy buddy 1981 (full movie) is on RUclips for anyone looking it’s fantastic film
Two fantastic actors who were brilliant together. Matthau even won an Oscar for the Fortune Cookie.
They're both also in JFK
And the Grass Harp!
Yes they did 10 films together and JFK they didn’t share any scenes
You missed the early 80's remake with Ron Glass and the guy from Sanford and Son. It was good, didn't find an audience.
I've seen Buddy-Buddy few times on television when I was a kid (dubbed in Italian), and as far as I remember it was hilarious.
I don' t think so it was not so good, more disappointing .
The french original with Lino Ventura and Jaques Brel is much better.
But "The fortune cookie" and "Front page" are really great.
I have seen Buddy-Buddy in its original English version and later dubbed in Spanish (featuring the same voices than in The Odd Couple) which helped a lot. The original French film is probably mutter, although their work is good.
Mathau's mumble jingle is hilarious! Totally agree that Out to Sea is a fun film. First time I saw Mathau was in Dennis the Menace and then saw Grumpy Old Men and became a huge fan of the duo.
I love them and miss them. I was fortunate to see Grumpier Old Men, Out to Sea and The Odd Couple II all in theaters when they came out.
The odd couple 2 is one of the most underrated comedies I’ve ever seen. So sweet
Love these guys. I've watched the Grumpy Old Men films probably dozens of times. I've enjoyed their other roles too. I like that they were in so many together. Plus, they also both passed away roughly a year from each other. They were great friends. I've grown up and appreciated all the actors you've talked about in your videos thanks to my Dad. All of them are comedy legends. I love your content. I happily subscribed to you :) Keep it up!
Thanks for the support! I'm glad you enjoyed!
You're very welcome. Looking forward to seeing this channel grow!
I was just a kid when my parents took me to the theater to watch Grumpy Old Men. The theater was packed and I've never witnessed people laughing so hard at a film. Nowadays, they don't make movies that effect people in such a way. Most "comedies" today barely perpetuate a small-chuckle----let alone several extended waves of belly laughs (that become relentlessly-contagious). To say "they don't make em' like they used to" doesn't even begin to describe the vast difference between the movies of today vs the movies of yesteryear.
For me, thanks to my mom. We have great parents.
Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men two of my favorite films with this legendary duo but also among my list of favorite comedies. Both Walter and Jack starred together in several classics but also did many classic films on their own whether it was drama or a comedy. I am only 33 going to be 34 this year and a fan of their films especially Grumpy Old Men and it’s sequel which is a classic
I remember watching "Days of Wine and Roses". There was a scene with Lemmon and Klugman when I realized I was watching Felix and Oscar.
"Buddy Buddy" used to be in constant rotation on Turner Classic Movies.
I saw on TV years ago and it definitely didn't deserve to bomb, it was a great film well paced, funny, feel good, some out of ideas movie exec could do worse than pitch a Mathau and Lemmon box set featuring it.
Jack Lemmons grave stone is pure comedic genius. Written on it:

I fell in love with this crazy loveable duo when I was a teenager. Good good memories. Yes indeed.
5:35 features two brilliant, iconic female actresses!! Monica Evans & Carolle Shelley went on to pair in roles through the 60's and 70's, similarly to Jack and Walter! That cute squeaky laugh they both do, makes me giggle every time!
They played the same role on TV on stage and in the movie. They only lasted the first 5 episodes on TV . They stayed friends for years. One just passed away here a couple of years ago. Theres only two people left from the odd couple. One of the girls (I cant keep the 2 straight forgive me) and one of the poker buddies is still alive (Vinny or speed I forget which now) . My favorite movie.
Loved watching this. Grumpy Old Men was oddly enough one of my favorite movies as a kid.
One of the best duos, thanks for a great start to the weekend and please keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for watching!
I just loved this guys comedy. I can watch their movies over n over n not get bored. Miss them
Remember seeing out to sea in the drive in when I was a kid
Loved it
One of my favourite comedy teams
How incredibly lucky we are that these two gave us so much great content. So lucky.
When they played together in a film, it's not seen but they both did their best to make each other other look good. They complimented each other.
My grandpa was in Grumpy Old Men. We're from (live in) minnesota. Apperently there's a train scene and my grandpa was the conductor on that train. He did that job for 60 years. I'm glad to see from all the comments that Grumpy Old Men is so popular. He lives on, after all :)
Just love them both, and thats why i got all the movies with them.... Regards from Denmark...;O)
Kim Schrøder love from USA!
I freaking loooved Out To Sea
Same! Funny enough it was the first film I saw of theirs and loved it as a kid.
"We're out of Cornflakes, F.U., do you know how long it took me to figure out that F.U. stood for Felix Unger." Genus.
LOL So funny ; )
Grumpy old men is a masterpiece. Me and my brother quote that movie all the time
I love these two together. The two grumpy old men movies are some of my all time favorites!
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau was from the greatest generation America ever had, as Millennials that would be our grandparents generation, it saddens me that their generation is now gone. America will never be the same again, thankfully films like these will help preserve the memory of better times and even better people.
Buddy Buddy was the film that made me fall in love with Matthau. Great soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin too.
They will always be among the comedy greats!
I own them all except for Buddy, Buddy too. But I've seen that movie though. It was a long time ago and I don't remember being impressed either. Two great men live in heaven now.
Love these mini docs, the clips, the history. Matthau and Lemmon I put in the same league as Laurel and Hardy. They had such great chemistry together and I concur that Out to Sea and Odd Couple II are fun to watch as they never missed a beat.
Thank you I have never seen many of these films. I am downloading them now. Thank u again
"Buddy, Buddy" is a great comedy, Lemmon & Matthau are in the top form in it. It was often on Polish TV about 10 years ago.
These guys were great together and apart. I can't imagine anyone other than James Garner in 'My Fellow Americans ', though. He and Jack were perfect together in that movie. I don't see Walter in that role. Walter was so great in the blue collar roles. The everyman. He was perfect in 'The Odd Couple ', 'Bad News Bears' and 'Survivors'. Good video.
James Garner was perfect in "My Fellow Americans". As much as I love Matthau, I really couldn't see him as a swarmy, womanizing former president like Garner can.
Their horror-western comedy "Cold Feet at the O-Boy Corrall" was a constant presence on HBO years ago. Lemmon as the fiancee of the vampire sheriff's daughter in Tombstone was a triumph, and Matthau as the undertaker was a perfect match.
I can't find that title on google
@@limeglasses neither can i
The greats! Missed forever
I didn't actually know either of these actors. But I started to really love everything about them watching this video. And then I just had that sinking feeling, you're going to tell me one of them died, aren't you.
Out to sea and the Odd Couple II are classics in my home with me and my husband.
I’ve only ever seen Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men a couple times each. I saw them as a kid and barely remember them. But watching this video honestly still made me cry. These guys are perfect and always will be.
I grew up with these movies, days where actual presence and talent were what made a movie over cgi, best insults were from grumpy old men, I still remember the insult to the IRS agent, Why don't you pull your lip over your head and swallow, delivered so simply it had me in tears.
Damn, I miss these guys, what a team. Walter always reminded me of a stray Bassett hound you just had to rescue. Jack Lemmon was handsome and had a conscience. You could tell they genuinely loved each other.
I've seen "Buddy Buddy" many times on TV here in Germany. It's a really fun movie and I would watch it anytime again. It's a shame that it never got a DVD release!
I feel like Grumpy Old Men is more memorable than the odd couple
Grumpier Old Men is even better. One of the few times a sequel was better than the original.
The Odd Couple will always be my personal favorite. But, Grumpy Old Men is just as good and perhaps more nostalgic to me because I saw it in the theater as a kid.
I like "The Odd Couple" better, but they're both good.
Jack Lemmon going to a Go-go bar and trying to clear his sinuses. "KNHAH! KWNAH!"
I have been wanting Hollywood to make more Grumpy Old Men. Not a remake. Just another. 2 or 3 more. Each one with its own odd paring. Opens it up for so much more
@@lakrids-pibe that's one reason I didn't care too much for the odd couple. Felix's character is very unlikable for me. But in grumpy old men, both characters are great.
Two wonderful actors, great video thank you very much.
I also love Out to Sea. Brent Spiner angry crooning is such a memorable scene among many other great scenes.
very well done. two great actors! They are missed.
Thanks for this video.
I love watching their videos as a kid and I've got to admit that I totally forgot about them. So glad that I ended up seeing this.
Thanks for watching!
I’ve long loved Lemmon and Matthau but thanks for bringing this piece together to remind us all. I saw buddy buddy on vhs in the late 80s I think but don’t remember much more than the premise. It would be great to see it again too.
What a great tribute to two of the funniest men who ever were paired together or separately. Thanks so much for this, I watch the original Odd couple and the Grumpy Old Men movies a couple of times each year.
Possibly my favourite actors and both films are right up there in my top films
unbeatable!
.....never will be a better duo!
Loved this comedy duo! The "Odd Couple", one of my all time favorite movies.❤😂😂❤
Thanks for the reminder. Its been so long on most of their movies its fresh again. I think I like their buddy movies a lot more than almost any others. The best other movies were when they were buddies with some other great actor like Tony Curtis.
The Odd Couple, Grumpy Old Men and The Fortune Cookie, ALL Hilarious! Of I was a Hollywood executive, and I could choose any two actors in today's pictures to cast an Odd Couple remake, I'd choose Paul Rudd and Mark Ruffalo. The chemistry they've shown together in interviews, and in scenes together, absolutely hilarious. I think it would be a winner.
Matthau and Lemmon had chemistry that is hard replicate, just had cinema magic together.
This might be one of the best videos on the channel. Jack and Walter are underrepresented in comedy history.
Good use of Wesley Willis's backing track!! Lolol rock and roll duo
i loved grumpy old men - its a awesome movie .
I grew up in Cleveland and remember when they filmed the football game scene in The Fortune Cookie! I was a freshman in high school.
Walter's joke at the end was priceless!
I remember watching the two Grumpy Old Men movies over and over as a kid, Matthau & Lemmon were hilarious.
And I definitely agree with you on the Odd Couple sequel.
The Odd Couple II is a pretty entertaining flick. Some of the funniest one-liners I've ever heard.
Even if they don't have a scene together: They both were in Oliver Stones JFK. That's worth mentioning.
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon....Pure Gold!
The Front Page is great, I really enjoyed Matthau’s performance as a crooked old-timey newspaper-man. He spits out smart, sharp dialogue with real verve.
Thanks so much for creating/uploading this. My dad and I would watch these movies all the time when I was growing up. I really enjoyed Out to Sea, My Fellow Americans and The Odd Couple II. Two comedy greats who teamed up to be maybe the greatest comedy duo of the colorized era. This channel has great content galore!
Really the best duo of all time. The grumpy old men movies are my absolute favorite. They are both in my top movies ever. Some of the few movies I ever watch multiple times.
Grumpy old men is my jam. I am not 70 years old but man, i understand them everyday more and more
Thanks to Sunday afternoon movies I was a huge Jack Lemmon fan. My mother was a Walter Mathau fan as long as I can remember. So of course we went to see Buddy Buddy at the theater. I know you'll probably still want to see it yourself, but I can assure you, you will regret it. It was so bad that we we couldn't bring ourselves to risk seeing Grumpy Old Men until we'd heard overwhelming praise from multiple people who were familiar with our tastes.
Keep up the quality of these mini docs and you will soon be swimming in subscribers. Very well crafted!
they were priceless...one of my fav beside the Odd Couple was Grumpy Old Men. Can watch them over and over and......etc.
