That makes sense because usually people that are watching these podcasts already agree with much of the content. That being said, it’s important to have these podcasts in order to validate your thoughts, with evidence straight from experts, in order to fortify you mentally from being tricked by media/corporate/government propaganda.
Props to you for trying to convert the rest though. I find it too stressful talking to people who disagree by regurgitating BS arguments/‘data’ and are deaf to any conflicting points.

I REEEEALLY want to read Sarah’s book! When is it coming out/what is the title?
You had me at people being the product of their environment… as an applied behavior analysis dork, I’ve been saying this for years… though I do also believe that some of our behavior can be chalked up to our internal “environment” like psychological framing, or physical like genetics, inflammation, infection, etc.
Also, regarding the notion of security granted by fixed thinking… I really love that. I’ve also been saying another version of that for years. That black and white thinking gives the illusion of safety … because it’s all about prediction. This is something I’ve gleaned from working with fearful animals. They do so much better with a sense of control, in other words prediction or choice. I’m inclined (though I have no data to back this up) to think that some people with a lot of fearful behaviors don’t want their “freedoms” (choice--read wearing a mask on your chin like you’re wearing a condom on your balls) taken away and black and white thinking allows for prediction and certainty… which is control.

In your intro you talk about "saving the planet". I wish people wouldn't use that expression. There is no more need to "save the planet" Earth than there is to save Mercury or Jupiter. They're utterly indifferent to humans, and will always be entirely indifferent.
"Oh, it's just shorthand! We all know what it really means - doing something about climate breakdown, ecological degradation, and socio-economic challenges."
Unfortunately it's not so innocent. By framing it as "saving the planet", we shift our gaze away from the mirror. We shift the emphasis away from acknowledging the impact of human actions on the interconnected systems that sustain life on Earth. The real concern is not saving the planet but preserving the conditions that make Earth not just habitable for us and uncounted other species, but a place where humans can live a mutually-beneficial life with those other species.
When people think of saving the planet, they have a vague, unfocused, abstract and remote idea that detaches them from the immediate and tangible consequences of their behaviour right here, right now. The phrase contributes to cognitive dissonance, to a collective complacency or a magical belief that the planet can be sick or be healed.
Focusing on human responsibility and the consequences of our actions brings attention to the need for sustainable practices, conservation efforts, and removing social and economic inequalities. Shifting the narrativeoff "the planet" to highlight our role in the intricate web of life encourages more thoughtful and responsible behaviour.
Instead of "saving the planet" couldn't we develop a short statement of aim that encourages critical thinking and a sense of urgency around the real challenges we face? I'm not a marketer, but preserve our biosphere, protect and sustain life on Earth, strive for a sustainable now, build a mutually beneficial relationship between humans and the natural world... something along those lines, perhaps.

We aren't a self is a wonderful recognition. Next up realize we aren't better than other people, we are here in the richest parts of the world with time to ruminate beyond what Mother Earth wants for us, which is to survive and reproduce. This is not a big leap to recognize we are not better than ants, we are ants. Thought is automatic, and the nature of thought is to divide. So you will find yourself having endless conversations that keep you engaged as long as there is some storyline: this happened and then that happened. 20:27 there was a time in the 1980s when Community mediation was spreading into schools and neighborhoods, and being established as services within City governments. The dream I had at that time as a professional mediator, was that mediation conflict resolution was going to become the normal way for people to resolve conflict regularly and daily in their lives. But then what happened... Was that the law profession "co-opted" the community mediation model, and basically dismantled it.

Defining heterodoxy as “adjustment disorders” must be an indicator of decadence - no reductionism needed.
I would posit that the dissonance is not purely ‘cognitive’, as it could well relate to how modernism has downplayed emotional, experiential, intuitive or contextual awareness - life over time, not just status quo.
Not that dr. McGilchrist is “it”, but his description of brain lateralism does point to what’s missing, some may call this the Meta Crisis or Meaning Crisis.
Sense of being should lead our ways of doing, as pure “instructions” are as alienating as the political-economic conformity we have. If power is forever locked to possession, we’ll stay in trouble.

How ironic, that a discussion on cognitive dissonance doesn't mention animal agriculture on the topic of climate change. 🤔 "Meat related cognitive dissonance"(MRCD) to be specific. The leading cause of deforestation is animal farming, and it's one leading source of CO2 & methane emissions. Given the significant impact of climate change on biodiversity and animal habitats, one might expect animals to be a part of such conversations.

But your general point is a valid one. I've seen "street interviews" of attendees at various climate-related conferences or conventions and the degree of ignorance about this topic among the people you would expect to have at least a passing familiarity with this issue is pretty surprising.

@@HidingFromFate Climate comes up briefly at 39:22. Diet is a top issue, if not THE top issue. It is the cow in the room we are ignoring, only because it's the easiest thing to change. It's easier to complain about nebulous entitles and geo-policatal issues rather than just look to the most basic simple thing we have the power to change, because complaining about those things doesn't require personal effort.
We may not be able to escape transportation, phones, technology, but we CAN easily ONLY eat plant foods.*
I was super interested in this podcast at first, but that has turned to disappointment - I noticed that when it comes to the most impactful changes that we actually have the power to make, they are either mum, or only speak to straw-man examples of plant based future looks like - like in the episode titled "Transitional Farming for a Plant-Based Future",
Most all guests who speak on agriculture or environment seem to be super pro-meat and host never pushes back, the refusal to acknowledge the ideals that underly veganism( non-exploitation of weaker beings) and plant-based(least destructive diet) as important to improving the planet, despite the vast obvious benefits, is just absurd to witness.

Last week I had a job interview, and the guy did not even ask in the beginning how I was doing. not even as a standard thing to begin a conversation. there was no human interaction at all, no chitchat, no emotional display on his face during the whole interview and afterwards he suggested in an email me having presented pictures from an already published paper, but clearly they were different, just the style was the same. How do you cope with people not being able to access their emotions and being solely focused on always being high-achievers, high-performers and linear thinkers?
imo these people have island talents, but they should not be in charge of other people. people tending to be more introspective should be the ones laying out strategies, not the linear thinkers. yet they are the ones that are most in charge in our society. I still feel emotionally violated by this interview.

That flight was going to happen one way or another. This is much bigger than any one decision. It requires mass awareness and consciousness. people seem to think that flying uses as much or less fuel than driving a car. It's a very strange "error of logical type" as Bertrand Russell called it. As if planes are the equivalent of car-pooling whereby you still have 1 car but more people in it and therefore LESS total cars. Obviously this is NOT how flying works!! hilarious. My more people flying that does NOT mean less planes are needed to fly people because there's not ONE plane that is for a single occupant (unless of course it's a tiny plane just flown by the pilot).

The thing is when you fly you are participating in an horrific act for the purpose of nothing except leisure or in service to the industrial death cult in most cases. It is a privilege enjoyed by a tiny minority who can double their already insane levels of emissions in a few hours.
When people who are speaking out about ecocide, overshoot, the polycrisis, the predicament, the collapse, all of that, are totally invalidating themselves when they then choose to fly somewhere to imbibe psychedelic soup or get a tan or help refugees or tell people about the predicament or whatever. Because it is completely not necessary to participate in it. And if we the rich are not able to show the willingness to put our money where our mouth is then all we are is so many pointless emissions making self-deluded idiots.

You guys talk about our sense of self as if you knew. We dont have the slightest idea what the neurobiology of the self looks like. In fact, there isn't even an approximate existing theory of what it might look like. And, by the way, what "non-weird cultures" are you even talking about? Would that, also, not be a relevant question? So we have a better idea of what the lady is talking about, that other cultures supposedly are not carried away by the western "weird notion" of wanting to be attached to one's experience of the self? Yeah, Buddhism, but its the ONLY instance known in "non-weird" countries. Not to mention thats only one worldview of the self of Buddhism among a huge variety of other versions that spill over into Hinduism. Where the impersonalism is now deeply and profoundly preoccupied by the effort to not only understand the self, but to experience it more deeply, with many relationships from this supposedly - we dont know - illusory and unreliable hub of feeling and action. Please. Which you call illusory or naive, but, apparently, it clearly has played a positive role in our evolutionary history, language. What the self is actually made from that we do know a bit about, symbolic worlds. A language attribute that does not have to be a source of conflict with the objective world, demonstrably. Pacific Islanders had a complex mythology of selfhood existing in the cosmos, but were amazing inductive observers, critical thinkers, and better navigators than Perry and Magellan put together. So you are not honest thinkers that care about having even a dash or a pinch of intellectual integrity or fair way of examining reality - or our subjective experiences of the world. About the only thing you actually do prove compleatly, and depressingly enough, to add to everything else, is that discussion and reflexion of the self is a profoundly political issue these days, too. And, might add, pretty unserviceable and shitty journalism, by the way, that dies. And does not help with anything. The climate emergency is NOT a cognitive dissonance issue. We know whats going on. That has to do with power and money. All political issue - which you cowardly pseudo intellectuals do NOTHING to help confront. While NOTHING changes, you make worse by gaslighting human agency, clap, clap, while kids and the future continue to get screwed. I suggest sharpening up with a class or two on philosophy of science to cover the gaps, at least a little. Some Thucydides wouldn't hurt either.

I think you need to tailor the content source to your intended audience. Sometimes it can be a bridge too far, so to speak, for the particular type of person you wish to engage. For example, if I perceive someone to be somewhat of a moderate or marginally conservative, I would more likely suggest content from someone like Nate Hagens to them. He's pretty relatable and non-threatening to the average Gen X'er, boomer and older Millennials who isn't already highly engaged (or rabbit-holed) within strident social media platforms. Hagens comes from the corporate Wall St. world, but also has some higher Master or PHD level education in environmental-related studies.
But if someone is a little more right wing and who doesn't take climate and resource issues seriously, alternatively I might suggest someone like Chris Martensen of Peak Prosperity who I perceive to be more right-wing. He came out of the the corporate world as well, but I think he would probably be more relatable to MAGA or MAGA adjacent types than Hagens would be.
Martensen is very big on discussing resource depletion issues and the fact that traditional economic growth metrics will be coming to an end, with an emphasis on building smaller like-minded communities to help sustain in times ahead. But because some of his other non-climate or resource-related views tend to more traditional right wing, I can see him making more headway convincing people about the severity of environmental issues with the type of persons who hold similarly more traditional conservative views on a few other topics (gender "ideology", Marxism/socialism, etc.).
