As a western woman living in Europe, we are also scared to go out at night, walk alone in the dark, or to sit in the train having someone staring at us. We also pretend to call our brothers, fathers or anyone if someone is walking behind us. Yes, we can wear more revealing clothes and stuff like that, but also we are constantly judged. Unfortunately I think it’s a worldwide issue…

@@meralozdemir551 I’m Italian, I live in Milano. Anyway I don’t think it’s a religion issue. My boyfriend is Muslim, he’s Turkish, and I’m Christian catholic of course. He is the best person I’ve ever met in my life. Most of the issues we see are from immigrants, but I’m talking generally. I don’t feel safe either unfortunately. I’m also planning to move to Netherlands with my boyfriend in a few months :)

Doguda kadin dendigi zaman belki cok bi deger hissetmiyosun ama doguda anneye verilen cok buyuk bir deger var. sahsen ben dogulu ailelerle tanistigim zaman orda anneye verilen degerin normalde gordugum ailelerden cok daha fazla oldugunu gercekten hissediyorum. The state doesn't give much support for a woman when she has children. After birth she can't stay and take care too much time with the child, she needs to return to work after 3 months. Also she does not receive an adequate financial support from the state after birth. So having kids and also a career may be extremely difficult and that says much of how valued are women in Turkey. If they can't work they can't get freedom and that freedom could be life saving in situations when the partener becomes violent. So basically the state encourages women to stay home and raise kids and depend on their partener's financial support.
That's exactly how I think and the reason for which I consider this support as essential. It's also important for the children as they should grow up in a safe environment which more probably provided, if the mother can truly care for her child (both parents should!) and is not financially dependent of the father.
The Turkish government isn’t that sophisticated, they mostly don’t care.
that guy from 9:36 is the literal embodiment of what's wrong with the eastern parts of Turkey. They are hiding and trying to cover up their problems concerning their women, also education of the women is still neglected. He is lying while looking straight into the camera and doesn't feel shame. Also him speaking about women being treasured more in the east cannot be further than reality. Polygamy and bride price is still very common. Putting a price on a person doesn't feel like you're treasuring them. Let's pretend that we are better than the rest even though we are far worse but are good at hiding it. Shame on you...
I’m not sure about how it’s practiced in eastern turkey but as they are Muslims I assume it’s the same as the rest of the Muslim world. The bride “price” is an inanccurate way to put it. The money doesn’t go to the family. The money goes to the woman herself. This is her security. This is the man providing for her. This a manifestation what most woman want (a man providing for them) and have the right to demand from their men. To take that away, ban it, whatever, in my opinion is female oppression.
Polygamy, that’s a whole other topic. Whether you like it or not, the concept of polygamy increases the odds of widowed women, barren women, older women, who are generally avoided by first time grooms to be taken care of by a man who wishes to be polygamous and as a result owes the nth wife the same list of responsibilities that he does for the first. I’m not saying this is what is done in practice, or this is right or wrong, I am simply highlighting the justification of the practice.
As for the topic of education. If anyone is forced (whether explicitly or implicitly) not to pursue what they want then of course that is bad. But if people are willingly pursuing the life of a house wife and are fulfilled by that then I see no problem with making that life easier just the same of making an educated life easier. And to claim that “social conditioning is brainwashing these women into seeking the life of a housewife when what they really want is to be independent” then can just as easily claim that “feminism is brainwashing women into seeking independence when what they really want is to be house wives”. Just like how I can say “masculinity is brainwashing men into seeking a life of stoicism when all they really want is to be house husbands”. There are people who fall into all of the camps that I mentioned.

Completely agree with the lady on 1:48. And regarding 9:36, I believe it's quite the opposite going on in Eastern Turkey -meaning that women are more oppressed and abuse is more common yet concealed in the east.
Just to add my two cents, being a woman in Turkey is a constant feeling of being stuck in between.

Bence Türkiye'deki kadınlara yönelik fiziksel ve psikolojik şiddet artmıyor aksine azalıyor. Bizim arttığını düşünmemizin nedeni bilgiye daha çabuk ulaşıyor olmamız. Eskiden aynı mahallede yaşanan problemleri bile bazen duyamıyorken artık sosyal medya aracılığıyla bilgiye hızlıca erişebiliyoruz. Bir de Türk kültüründe kadının önemli ve değerli olduğunu düşünüyorum. Kendini geliştirmemiş kesimden bahsetmiyorum tabiki bu kesim her ülkede var ve bunu yazmaktan vazgeçmeyeceğim #istanbulsözleşmesiyasatır

I stayed in Turkey for many years. I don't want to be arrogant, but (09:30) I'm sure this man is one of the best representatives of the male hegemon society structure mentioned 🙃 Problems related to being a woman are not a problem unique to Turkey. Unfortunately, this is the case throughout the world. There was something very obvious that I observed in Turkey. There are serious differences between the east and the rest of the country. While the Turks are more Balkan, Caucasian, Asian and European, the east is completely under the influence of Middle Eastern culture. But as far as I can see, the Turkish family structure is in a very good situation compared to our European one.
Never mind what he said. That friend is a Kurd, it can be seen from his speech. We have cultural differences, he said there were too, but he spoke very biasedly. They mostly have medieval ideas such as femicide and girls not being sent to school. It's a cultural thing.

Women have more or less similar issues everywhere, we manage to gain many rights this century in the world. Turkish media tend to show criminal files against the women maybe for more protective reasons favoring women but this spoils the societal confidence and creates an atmosphere as if it is a frequent thing. What Eastern region women bear is due to male dominant culture, ethnic differences or relatively lower level of education, not religion or nation rooted.
Kimse fikirlerini açıkça belirtmemiş bence. Klasik bizim "kol kırılır yel içinde kalır" kafası. Kendi aramızda konuşurken başka yabancıya anlatırken adeta makyajlayıp anlatıyoruz.

Özgürlük yok, eğitim oranı düşük görüşüne kesinlikle katılmıyorum. Türk kültüründe kadın herzaman değerlidir. Türk kadını güçlüdür. Türkiyede erkeklerin daha fazla eğitilmesi lazım. Kadına saygı ve davranış konusuda.
Islam kültüründe ama kadının değeri yoktur. Sadece yürüyen bir vaginadır. Türkiyede kadına davranış Türk değil, islam kültürüne göre şekilleniyor. Bu da kadının birey olmasını, özgürlüğünü kısıtlıyor.

@@Tanya-wc8yv as a Western woman who lived in Morocco for three years, I have to say that Moroccon man generally speaking were much more respectful towards me than European men. When I am in Belgium, you hardly see women after darkness, with the exeption of students going to the disco. In Morocco zntire families go out at night. At 11pm there are still mothers with children on the street, lovers, spouses, friends,...I have never felt as safe at night as in this Islamic country. It won't be like this in entire Morocco, but the idea that generally speaking women are unsafe in Islamic countries is absolutely not true.
Istanbul does not reflect Türkiye. You cannot make inferences about Turkish people based on Istanbul. Most of the mess is in big cities like that.

Im Asian, I’m living in Turkey now, J don’t know if it is because the immigration but because im dark Asian from tropical island, Turkish women stare at me with a very horrible face, it’s very uncomfortable and rude, this happens to me in the metro, bus, markets and restaurants. When I’m buying something or just want to look something in the market, they push me away like if they hate me just because I’m a foreigner. This doesn’t happened with European people. Are they racist or something? I just really want to understand why they behave like that. I’m in Turkey because my husband is Turkish. I’m Japanese but of course because I’m dark they never think I’m Japanese. I’m stressed and have anxiety every time i need to go out.
It's because of immigrant policies. There are millions of immigrants living in Turkey right now. Turkey don't used to have that much immigrant. It's changing our culture in a bad way because most of them from middle eastern countries. Middle easterns don't have much to give positive things to us. They don't respect our language and culture. So Turks are very uncomfortable with immigrants and probably as you know our economy is in a bad shape and we are paying millions of dollars for immigrants every year. Becase of that if you look like middle easterner then probably you will see things like that more in the future but don't thing it's about your skin color because most of the Turks have dark skin color as well. It's more of a cultural thing than race. If Turkey send most of the immigrants back to their country then i don't think you will see such thing more often.

Turkey gives the impression of a country living an internal conflict in this century: it's a country of western asian background, which, in a very weird way, has been told that it should become.. European. When i went to Turkey, many things fascinated me: the oriental style markets, the oriental music, the traditional hookah cafes, the Music players sitting on oriental rugs, playing an oriental istrument... i rather was not fascinated by any of their attempt to look more "westernized" than they simply are
What is oriental style market??? Hookah cafes are not a traditional thing,its for Arab tourists/immigrants mostly. If you want to see a real "oriental" country, you should visit Arab countries.

Believe me Turkey is very patriotic and there is no "attempt" at all. Turkey is the crossroad of cultures and you expect it to be oriental...
"orient" is just europeans generalizin all eastern and asian culture into one thing because it seems exotic to them. There is no one orient. Also lets not intervene when people define their own culture. As a tourist who probably only see touristic places in a new country, when you talk and listen to the natives, who are we to judge their own definitions of themselves.

Been in Istanbul as a blond white European, never been so afraid in my life.. I appreciate the fact that in Central Europe you can walk and dress however you want and no one bothers you.. I was looked down by women there, which came as a surprise to me because I’m also a woman and we should be on the same side.

I dont think that is a bad thing. They were probably looking at you because you're a foreigner. It happens in most countries. For example in China too, people often tend to stare at tourists and even try to take photos with them. They could also be staring at you because you are blond, since that is a rare hair colour in Turkey.

@@ofelia1774 man around 15 percent of people have light coloured hair in Turkey. The majority of people in Turkey have thus dark hair. Im not saying anything bad, but some people will look at people who are obviously a foreigner, out of curiosity. Its just human nature.
@@ofelia1774 of course Turkic people are really diverse; look at Kazahstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan(they are mostly farsi but Turkic people still live there, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan. But still, the majority has dark hair.
