      It's not 100% a must for me but after I connected my took the time to remove and re add my hue hub to smartthings vs matter instead of using the cloud. Then after seeing how many of my automation/routines changed to being listed at local on the hub I kind of was like now I want to see how many of my other routines I can make local. I was just like 😁 look at all those runs local on the hus icons. But still it's not a must but if it is local then that's definitely a big+ for me.

      in my system everything is local, except the weather info (i don't have a weather station) and remote control using the companion app.

      Depends on what it is. For most devices, yes, offline is a must. I use HA exclusively and that''s the real dealbreaker, it must work with HA.
      I have a few things like a water meter sensor and some other things that are cloud-based, but anything that is a direct interaction like lights and switches must be all 100% local for me.

    It would be really great if all electronic products would carry a label indicating: a) registration required; b) fully functional without internet; c) limitations when not registered; d) limitations when not connected to the internet; e) fully functional if service provider (or their servers) are out of business.

      The Home Assistant integration documentation says if the devices can be controlled locally or not. I use that to select devices.
      But I agree. It'd be nice if the manufacturers would state whether they support open standards for local connectivity.

    • @MarcSpctr
      @MarcSpctr Месяц назад +11

      don't expect manufacturers to do it without any being forced to explicitly mention it by law.
      till then I think OpenSource community need to do it.
      Home Assistant has a list of devices that are 100% functional offline.
      I hope more people contribute somehow to that list to make it better.
      I currently do not have Smart Home.
      But any next 5 years, am planning to build a new house and aim is for it to be fully automated and also 100% offline.
      So only when I want remote access, I activate their ability to connect to internet, else internet will be turned off by default.
      Last thing I want is security footage from my cameras being watched by people.
      For cameras, I have decided to go with "DUMB" cameras and have motion sensors to detect presence instead of having internet connected "SMART CAMERA"

      One of the requirements of the Matter protocol is the device **must** be able to run locally - probably why a lot of older devices are just not added with support without a hub. So, with a mix of local Matter devices & home assistant - if you are brave enough to go down that rabbit hole. This idea of a mostly local smart home for the basics should become more common.

    • @TechDogeth
      @TechDogeth Месяц назад

      Some of the older ones had software "issues" (features) if not updated that allowed you to flash custom firmware. I flashed mine with Tasmota, saved them from becoming e-waste. I was not able to save all, so some are waiting on a drawer for an exploit that might not come. At least it made me conscious of only buying devices that work offline in home assistant before I bought anything too expensive or core to the automation.
      I started to notice I needed local control since I lived in a place with spotty internet and the lag to turn off and on some lights became very apparent vs local compatible devices. Also, Google sucks at local control, even devices they say support it lag horribly when the internet is spotty. Never buying Google devices either. From this video, it looks like I should avoid amazon devices for the same reason.

    For the ecobee thermostat, you can set up the HomeKit integration in Home Assistant to communicate with it through that protocol rather than the cloud-based integration. If you still want to use the Apple Home app on your devices, you can also set up a HomeKit bridge through Home Assistant and choose to only have the thermostat to go through (or any device of your choosing)

    • @PoisonWaffle3
      @PoisonWaffle3 Месяц назад +3

      Came here to say this.
      The homekit integration is slightly different and worth comparing. IIRC the polling/reporting frequency is slightly different, and the temperature it reports is an average of the thermostat and it's remote sensors (as opposed to reporting those values individually).
      Easy enough to compare and adjust for, but at least it's local 👍

    • @TechDogeth
      @TechDogeth Месяц назад +3

      This sounds like a good idea for a future video, show devices that he was able to correct without necessarily buying something else. I feel with the current e-waste pattern of selling new items, it would be a breath of fresh air for a video. From the comments, it looks like at least the thermostat and potentially local-tuya ones would be candidates instead of items to replace. Bonus points for devices that support multiple ways to control them vs having to replace the manufacturer's firmware.

    • @YKSGuy
      @YKSGuy Месяц назад +2

      I was about to say the same, but one word of warning, make sure you set a DHCP reservation for the thermostat so it always gets the same IP. I had mine get disconnected from HA after a power outage and it did not recover, it turned out it was because its IP changed.. This isn't an issue for all homekit devices but in general when using the HA homekit emulation it is a good idea to use reservations.

Even if the power is only out for a moment or two, with no interruption to the main router/wifi setup I'm not having to wait to reboot everything - which is something I loathe having to do. Unless you have a "WHOLE HOME" power backup solution keeping you modem and router powered up serves NO purpose for remotely located WiFi cameras and other devices using AC power! MOST of us are in this boat but, strictly talking about an internet connection failure there are "fail over" options. I mentioned in my post that the Ring Alarm Pro hub allows you to keep devices or YOUR choosing connected over it's cellular backup connection and if you are home you can use the HOT-SPOT on yr phone as a internet connection and have used this Ring "feature" too many times to count as my internet goes out quite frequently for up to an hour or more and it's PEACE of mind knowing your "critical" devices are STILL connected and provide feedback even when NOT at home! As soon as the ISP internet is restored the Ring Alarm Pro hub switches automatically with NO worries and provides a "stable" connection to the outside world!

I like to use local when I can, be it matter, zigbee, z-wave, or local tuya. When I add a new item, I do a "local only" test to confirm it's okay.
    With your smart life products, which I guess is the flood lights and the fan, you could use tuya- local to keep smart life stuff local. It's in the HACS if I recall, not an official plug in. Those jungle routines can really cause an issue. In Home Assistant, you can tell an automation to continue on error, in which case if your cloud based routines fail, the rest will still run.

    There is local Tuya for Tuya stuff (I haven’t installed it yet because I only have two WiFi Tuya switches in the house left by the previous owners).
    Also there are two ecobee integrations. I use both. The local one (via HomeKit) is more responsive and worked when I accidentally unplugged my internet, and the cloud one has more accurate temperature logging and can handle more states than the default. I actually label the latter “my ecobee - cloud” to distinguish them. Suggest you do similar.
    I learned the lesson early on since many of my dimmers are Leviton WiFi instead of Lutron Zigbee like you. It was weird to think everything was working fine, and then realizing nothing worked when the internet went down. The simple fix was to remove the Leviton cloud hack from HA and use either HomeKit or Matter (depending on if the switches were updated). That plus wanting a Bluetooth speaker in the shower light led me down the zigbee path for stuff like Tuya etc. once you get a good Zigbee coordinator local control is pretty easy to achieve (had to get an SMLiight because I got a HA green and you can’t use the advertised USB dongle for both Thread and Zigbee simultaneously).

    The Ring products not working when the WAN connection is down makes sense but also is a big flaw to their products. At least with my home in AZ, incoming cable/fiber into homes is terminated on the side of homes it would be pretty easy to be malicious to cut that line and get into the home without anything alerting the owner.

    The robo vacuum needs a switch-bot button on it for back up. Maybe move the Rachio sprinkler operation to a Pico W, that would be a fun video project. I am trying to convince my wife that we need a Starlink Mini for hurricane season here in Florida so she can stream her videos (and of course other HA things). Maybe a T-Mobil $20 a month cell account which has unlimited data for backup (at least for your alarm system). So many options. You could add conditions to your automations to skip parts which are likely not going to work if the connection to the internet goes down. If you use the Nabu Casa cloud you can use binary_sensor.remote_ui equals 'on' to check if you are connected. Alternatively you can create a ping sensor to check external servers / your own external IP. Not too often though otherwise you might find yourself banned.
