    It's not just you, Jay, fall/autumn has always been associated with reading in my mind too. When I was a youngin in my school days, maybe summer was up there too, but something about the quieting down of the atmosphere, where things start to slow in preparation for winter, yet everything speeds up at the same time, with lots of festivities and holidays and watching the kids go back to school (or going back yourself, and thinking about all the assigned reading). I think it's natural that fall feels like the time for more reading.

    I forgot about the Edge Chronicles! I read the first one as a kid. Love a dangerous forest survival story. The weirdest part was when that girl captures the main character, thinking he's a pet. I don't know why I didn't continue with the series.

    I'm pretty sure this is the second time I've seen Gormenghast get recommended on this channel (relatively new here and stumbling on backlog), and the thoughts and summaries of parts of this book sound super intriguing! The art that shows helps really sell the theme and spirit of the tale. I may have to check this one out. Another book to the TBR Tower of Babel.
    I've been thinking about reading Dragonlance again this last week. Pretty sure it was specifically because of the first books title 😅. Just crazy it came to mind almost thirty years later. It was one of the very first fantasy books I ever read, that had me collecting DL and other DND books through the 90s. It had such great world building!

    I adore Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell AND especially the Chronicles of Prydain. I keep trying to convince my kids to get into them, but I found I'm better off just scattering good books around the house, like bait, and waiting for them to sniff them out on their own. I also got them Stone and Sky (because it's clean!) but I've been too anxious to read it until the SPFBO phase 1 is over since we're in the same group, lol. But I still plan too!

    Chris Riddell is such an amazing artist! I loved his Goth Girl series 😁
    Also, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the diversity of this list. While I always enjoy watching your lists, it usually feels, to me at least, that it's like 80-90% of classic, white male authors + Hobb and le Guin, so this one felt like such a breath of fresh air and I wanted to mention that! There's classic and modern fantasy in it, there's middle grade, YA and adult, there's indie and mainstream stuff, there are authors from marginalized communities (like M.L. Wang and T.J. Klune), there are classic, cozy, adventure, gothic stories and even a romantasy!
    Long story short, I just wanted to say that I appreciate it and I hope you continue to share with us more lists like this!💖☺

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  6 дней назад +3

      Uh pardon me? 😂 Lol right after I talk about how much I love Harry Potter, so not sure why you would call me a cancel culture apologist. I'm actually against cancel culture and think people get canceled for ridiculous reasons these days. As for Neil Gaiman though, there were allegations made by five women on the record and two off the record. It should also be noted that in literary circles it is pretty well known Gaiman likes young women. There's plenty of stories from comic con workers of him being creepy. A few weeks ago a recorded phone call was leaked where Gaiman admits he f*cked up and then offers $60,000 in bribe money to pay for a womans therapy that he sexually assaulted.
      I was blindsided by this news as I always really respected Gaiman. And I still do as an artist. I think he has an incredible mind and writes some of the most creative stuff. But power often corrupts, and people should be held accountable for their actions. So because of all that, I just don't feel right financially supporting him anymore. I'm not canceling his books, I think people should still read them and watch the various movie adaptations that are still beloved by many.

    Yay for Kiki's! And I'm totally on board with seeing Dragonlance videos, I loved that series so much growing up!
    I'm afraid Harry Potter was ruined for me by Rowling's raging transphobia. Being a transwoman whose life partner is also trans, her rhetoric puts us both in danger. As such when I see anything Harry Potter related, all I can see is her message putting us more at risk.
