  • This way of using the ferrocerium rod creates well aimed and large, hot sparks if done properly and its the one method I use the most. A common problem I often notice is that the steel scraper is pushed into the tinder when creating the sparks. Depending on what kind of tinder you have pushing the steel scraper into the tinder can be a big problem. With this method that is not an issue since you are holding the rod and scraper above the tinder not touching it.
The rowan, or mountain ash, bark (Sorbus aucuparia) I used is not as easy to light with a ferrocerium rod as birch bark but when it catches fire it burns well.
There are many other ways of using the ferrocerium rod, I like this one. Also there are a huge amount of various tinder that can be used with the ferrocerium rod and some of them requires different techniques. Now birch bark is a very forgiving material that easily ignites with sparks but I think its a good practice to try out some of the other more difficult materials as well.
    Hope you enjoy.

Curiously, we discussed this very method at the IOL Bushcraft PPG conference in the UK last week during a 10 minute workshop. I will experiment with it as I have always pulled my fireflash against the striker instead, this seems to give a lot finer control. Thank you Mattias
