Great video! I have all the Petra albums and most of them from 1974 to 1995 are quite good. After 1995 they went down hill for me until the cuttent classic Petra period where they rerecorded their classics on Back to the Rock (2010) and Back to the Rock 2 (2017). It's nice to hear a current update of their old classics.
Unfortunately, I never say Petra in concert. However, I did see John Schlitt with Head East at least four times in the 70s. They were the opening band for a lot of bands back then. Thanks for sharing your Petra top five. So interesting.
Not as metal as some of their albums, but Wake Up Call might be my favorite. More Power to Ya is the best from the Volz era. Ranking a Petra songs video would be cool, even on their uneven albums, there are at least 2-3 good songs on every album.
I'm working on my top 100 songs and needed a spreadsheet for it. Petra has almost 300 tracks. I might do a video with the results. I'm still listening to the 300 songs.
Wow, you've got a similar story as me. In 1985 I tossed HUNDREDS of albums - my whole secular vinyl collection (yeah, kind of wish I had those now). I was in the military at the time. I've heard some people try to say that Jekyll and Hyde was a metal album at times. Heavy for sure. I love it, but probably not in my top 5, but the rest of your four would be. Beat the System is the most electronic and pop of all the Volz years. Love it, but a definite change from their previous feel. I LOVE the Volz years (once past the first two albums), but it really is like two different bands.
My favorite album of the John Schlitt era is definitely On Fire! Great album. Great list all those albums are great and not a bad song on them. I also really enjoy This Means War. The Greg X. Volz era is more standard rock/progressive rock than hard rock and metal. I think you should give Beat the System a shot, it is really good, but fair warning it's more electronic and synthy than any album nothing hard, but it is still really good. It's the first album with John Lawry.
By the 3rd LP, Petra was on it's way music wise. I was done with Petra after the original singer left the group. At 68, I do not listen to noisy music much anymore. These days, it's mainly classical music which is timeless music for the soul.
Mine would be This means war On fire Back to the street Unseen Power Beyond Belief Jekyll and Hyde But there are so many you almost need to have two lists, one for the John era and one for the Greg era 😁 Yeah check out Beat the system. I got into Greg much later on and you missed This means war! That was a huge album
I only learned about Petra in the past three months or so but I became hooked on them to the point I binged their studio albums chronologically. I think it's a tossup between Volz and Schlitt since they each have their own respective sound. Their best albums in my opinion would be Beat the System and Beyond Belief, respectively. As a whole, I think Petra started to get "good" in the early 80's and peaked in the mid 90's, then dipped in audio quality (again, in my opinion) around the late 90's. I think Double Take was my least favorite album of theirs. Jekyll and Hyde, though, was a great last album, however. Despite all these things, I've been able to pick out at least one or two decent songs out of the least of them, and as far as I can tell, all the band members are awesome people.
On Fire is an absolute masterpiece
