Alien ship: majestically made for frontline, phalanx style warfare. Human ship designer 1: Are you sure we can’t make weaponized toilets? Human ship designer 2: We CAN but we’re required to have one thing that can’t be outright a weapon. Human ship designer 3: Hey guys, just thought you should know, if you flush three times within 2 seconds, the toilet will explode like a frag grenade!
Abit of a bally move calling a the ship Jaeger since it literally means hunter so all the league needed to do was to translate a simple Germen word and they would have known about us being predators
Since they're speaking galactic common, they probably don't have the translation for the German word. Or likely any human word. When the xeno said "fighter" it probably wasn't translated into galactic common, but just the literal word that was spoken/written by the humans.
I love this story and Myandis's narration is awesome. I have one quibble about the prey themes being herd animal themed. I feel the story over emphasizes the attitude gap between herd animals and predators. I distinguish between herd animals and true prey species like rabbits. Herd animals can be vicious when defending the herd. Even a mountain lion can get torn up badly or killed by a few cows defending their calves. If they get the Predator down, they don't stop until it's dead or it escapes. Thus, the idea of show battles seemed odd (when dealing with other species that is, show battles are plausible for intra herd conflicts). Anyway, if a space born herd mentality species overcame carnivores in their evolution, they will be just as likely to be vicious combatants as humans are. Why? If they know what predators are, they killed the predators off to become the space traveling product of their planet's evolution. They likely also killed each other when they got done with the predators. They would be like vegetarian humans who didn't quit eating meat because they felt bad, they quit eating meat because they couldn't digest it.
Their species believed that all sapient life capable of space travel could never be predatory in nature and confirmed this for millennia. Their war tactics were similar to how bucks settled territory disputes by clashing head on locking their horns so to speak. they went into battle expecting a territorial display of strength where surrender conditions were common sense and never dreamed of a species that would pursue a surrendering opponent.
they went in expecting a space phalanx, and got a good old taste of search and destroy. bulls are vicious, but they are a phalanx. a wall, of big scary things. these aliens where stagnant in their doctrine. most species where some sort of big scary herd herbivore, and spread the military tactic through battle. and most times, it won. battles became more stagnant, and bigger, and with the stakes too high, and inovation became unthinkable. but we are a bit of everything. in space, we see, and we kill, search, and destroy, hunt hunt hunt. we herd our enemies and we counter our predators, for we have always been both. the bothan were expeting a phalanx. Rashan were expecting a hunt. we were expecting a fight.
God i wish i could see the aftermath of that reveal at the end. Be an interesting thing to explore. Any more stories that have this sorta 'predator-prey' dynamic to things? Its an interesting scenario to slot humanity into considering we've been on both ends of that thing throughout our evolution.

Then again humans name things according to stuff that scares them.
Most likely that the name was Yeager, as in Chuck Yeager. Notably, because of the other ship being the Pappy Boyington. re: Black Sheep Squadron.
