Change the compressor oil twice as often as recommended if only using occasionally. Your 3000psi tank will drop to 2700 to 2800 after it cools down, best to fill it in cold water, then top up to 3200(or whatever your cut off is) before diving. I used always to top mine to 3300 as you always loose a couple three hundred shortly after getting in the water. I always had an ear flush solution(10%rubbing alcohol, 30% peroxide, 60% saline) especially for turbid or warm waters, kills the little critters and also cleans the ear canals Also avoid damage by learning to equalize before the pressure builds up, I usually crack my jaw forward to keet the eustachian tubes open, but there are several methods. Reverse blocks can easily cause ear infections and nasal bleeding and other problems
consider getting suction cups with handles on them, the ones used to carry glass have strong handles. that way when cleaning the bottom, you can tie off with a dive belt or just rope to hold you next to the boat. they are easy to attach or to remove from a smooth surface...
You're going to find that the hull may not be smooth enough for a suction cup. We used to just to use a rope ladder wrapped around the hull, and moved as you finished one area to another, simple easy . but the main thing in those waters to to do it weekly or biweekly
As someone who frequents the Caribbean and who also frequently gets ear infections (at least in one ear) I recommend ear drops every night you've been in those waters. Oral antibiotics may help when infections take hold, however you are much better off with ear drops with a mix of steroids and antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin & Dexamethasone). And of course it's always good to have an ENT take a look, as it may need some debris professionally removed.
I'm no doctor, albeit the husband of a doctor, and I think it is not recommended to use antibiotics so regulalrly as Yamon9896 is proposing (although different medical practice exists in different parts of the world). It leads to bacteria becoming resistent to the antibiotics which in time makes it even harder to cure.
@@werner134897 I was suggesting antibiotic ear drops in place of oral antibiotics, not as a regular after swimming treatment. @jonnooney7102 has the right recommendation for regular treatment following swimming
An otiscope can be found in many drug stores and makes inspection of the temptatic membrane easy, I've used one for years to catch ear infections for my sons. I use a simple swimmer's ear drying aid after water sports or diving to ensure the ear canal dries throughly. It's a mix of strong isopropyl alcohol and an antimicrobial. Most places that sell sunblock have it in stock. It's too painful to use if an ear infection is already present but is a great preventative for next time. There are a few recommendations in other comments for what we call “Ear Beer”. Our recipe has a bit of glycerin in it to help with the drying. We fill each ear canal before the dive and let it sit for a minute and then again after the dive. We were prone to severe infections and have not had any since.
Hey Mads and Ava. One of the most amazing dive locations I’ve been to is Lizard Island here in Australia. There’s a good anchorage and the coral cover is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Edit: we have a product called aqua ear here. It’s just a mild ethanol solution. Put those drops in each night you’ve been swimming and you’ll never get an ear infection again. As advised by my ENT.
DIN Scuba valves are becoming more popular in North America and are, as I'm sure you are aware, a superior connection to yoke. You would be better off to get a DIN valve for your second tank and convert any regulators you have to DIN rather than fiddle with DIN to yoke adapters. Love your videos... keep them coming.
Congrats to Eva for her certification, mastering buoyancy could take some, and the best way lo achieve that is maintain a horizontal position and search for a balance on the scuba equipment (may be her tank it’s 10 cm high, the top part with the valve must be on the lower part of the neck) time but definitely need practice and you made it so well. Try to dry your ears after each time on the water, there are many people susceptible to all micro fauna’s on water. And for the loose bolts on the propeller it’s completely normal, doesn’t matter how well and thigh you screwed, the vibration of the propeller on the same direction (doesn’t matter the axis) have this, effect on long term

Some skills I've never personally used...Maui Bailout (all gear in the water, and get geared up), and getting "stuck" and requiring degearing...I have better ways to die than in a cave or penetration wreck diving without visible exits. As for the voodoo gas (Nitrox) you really don't need it in the Caribbean. It's nice if you're diving 8 hours a day (Bonaire I was averaging 8 hours of bottom time a day) and the 36% Nitrox I was using really made a difference for those 90+ minute dives over that week. Ava's ears. She did the right thing 100%. If you can't clear, you're in for trouble. Get that 100% cleared up Ava. From experience in diving A LOT, you can use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar (50/50 mix). The vinegar kills any bacteria and the rubbing alcohol dries up the water. DO NOT CLEAN YOUR EARS WITH SWABS AFTER A DIVE!!! You'll do more damage than good. Again, experience here. :( Glad to see another diver. Glad the compressor works well! Interested to see how it does long term for sure. 20 minutes to fill a tank isn't bad.
Liked. Mads you may want to work with Ava on her fin kicks. Bicycle kicks waist air and can cause fatigue. I'm sure you checked. But make sure the intake hose is large enough for the added length. The galvanized fitting should go away as soon as you can find a SS or plastic fitting to replace it.
Do you need to keep the tank cool while filling? I remember they put the tanks in a water bath at the dive shops when they are being filled. Maybe your compressor goes a little slower so it doesn't heat up as much.
I am in the U.S. I had a custom made icon compressor made in Italy. One I cannot buy in the States. One of the things that shocked me and I had to verify it several times with the manufacturer, not some dealer. Is they supplied my compressor with a (Y) manifold and (2) 13ft fill whips. At the time U.S. dealers were advertising that the compressor will only fill one tank at a time. That simply is not true with the new icon compressor head. Not sure what they advertise now over here. Mine is stainless, fully automatic, 50 or 60hz 3 phase with no capacitors to corroded or overheat. Powered by a VFD and soft starts with a start up load of less than 3 amps. I have a huge compressor that fills 5 tanks and a bank system of K bottles as well but the icon is my favorite. Good luck with the compressor. Dive safe.
If the lithium battery is getting warm check for a loose connection also I found to charge them disconnect the live wire from the solar see how it goes using a lith gharger buy the generator. Use a hand held infared thermometer check the poles and charger. I hope you have lots of fun scuba diving.
Just a bit of info about hurricane season. There is a Super El Nino brewing and they are forecasting a very very mild hurricane season. My suggestion if you decide to leave is south to Brazil. Hard sailing but worth it. No guarantees going north

Been waiting for you to get to the diving and dive compressor! I've been diving since I was in my 20s. I'm 61 now. Just bought a whole new set up. Bcd,tank,fins,mask,computer,tank, ect. All Mares. I've got about a 15 yr span where I didn't dive at all. I've dove The Keys, Oahu Hawaii, SoCal, and many lakes in Michigan. Best visually I've ever experienced is a place you wouldn't think. It 30 ft off the Highway at the bridge that connects Big Pine Key and Little Torch Key. Either side, Gulf or Atlantic. It's literally the Finding Nemo Movie visually.

Hi, great video as usual. My dive shop puts my tanks in a wheelie bin filled with water to keep it cool while being filled. They tell newbies that it is a safety measure.
@@bobadam7021 Yes, they say it is to keep them cool. I have seen the aftermath of tanks that have exploded due to corrosion and a bin full if water would not have helped much.
I have always had ENT problems, when I started diving in 2009, holidays were often spoilt by ear infections. Then I found a product called “Earol”. Often used by professional swimmers, and divers, it is a fine-medical grade oil sprayer which coats the outer ear canal and blocks infectious bugs from being able to infect your outer ear. I have not had an ear infection ever since using this before every dive. Has protected against any ear infections since 2012, and I dive in tropical waters every year.
lol, the guy before me made the same recomendation. Will have to be the lever-type cups, because the other style uses evacuation of air to create the vacuum. I have seen these used by Expedition Evans on their hull.

Mads, Grenada is going to be your best option, beautiful island, great area for cruisers and below the Hurricane belt. Two hurricanes in the last sixty years. Bonnie came thru in 2022 but was a tropical storm for Grenada for the most part Check it out
For the battery, you can get a 12 volt 'cooler', remove the chiller plate and place it up against the battery. The 'cooler' will draw about the same as a big fan. You can even hook up a thermal switch to have it run in auto mode, cooling down things when the Tropical heat climbs... 😁
Please consider as suggested Montreal and the rest of the great lakes. The trip up and down is often called the great loop. Fresh water sailing is nice, until winter comes by then it is time to sail elsewhere. All the best, happy travels.
I got a Coltri with a gasoline engine. In the instruction manual it is written, that during the first 5 hours, you are only allowed to run it for 10 minutes, then turn off, cool down and another 10 min. Maybe it is different with the electric version.
O.K. on the SCUBA compressor, delighted you went for an electric model, as the petrol motors are very NOISY, last time i was up in the Sea of Cortez a cruising boat with a couple had a petrol powered unit and would run it every afternoon after diving, the noise level was very loud, i would move to the other side of the bay it was so bad, on another note, when i charge my tanks, i have a long charging hose and put my tank in the water, hanging by a line, keeps the tank cool.
Back in my days of boat bottom cleaning, I would use the tide to push me into one side of the hull. Then when the tide changed, and I had taken a break, I went to the other side. Didn't always work as planned (does any boat project?), but it helped a little.
Mads, get one of those Window glass suction cup thingies! use it to make a hold onto the hull.. they also work great when opening floor boards! Just saying! Congrats Ava, ear infections suck.. get well soon.
Hey Mads - I'm curious about your ring anode on the saildrive; did you paint the surface on the drive where the anode is bolted on? If so, are the 2 still electrically connected? Thank you DIY boat-god! PS: The same thing happened to our Zinc last year on our new-to-us boat. I believe the issue was that loctite 242 was used. No issues after re-installing with 243!
Hi Mads & Ava. I have been following your adventures since you installed the refleks stove on Obelix. I have my own Maxi 84 sailboat from 1980 that I dabble in handiwork on. I noticed You using butyl tape many times, but whenever I find something here in Denmark, it looks completely different from what you show in your videos. Wax earplugs are great to keep water out of your ears when diving. Especially if you are worried about things swimming into your ears. I've been diving since 1987 and used to get ear infections from water in the ear all the time until my mom suggested wax earplugs.
Suggest you rinse out your ears, after diving,/swimming with a product like "Swimmers Ear". That should reduce the future problems. Also have your ears checked for wax plugs. Water gets between the plug and the ear membrane causing infection.
I was once prescribed 0.1% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) ear drops for an after-dive ear infection. It works really well and worth carrying if you intend diving away from a town
She is not describing otitis external but otitis with effusion. That would not be helped with anything you put in the external ear. It is. Caused by pressure effect on the Eustachian tube. Antibiotics don’t really help, only time results in resolution. It can take several months to clear, but usually quicker. This opinion is based on 27 years of diving and 37 years as an Otolaryngologist.
Ava, the more you dive, the more you get it. And once you reach the "fish point" you'll be at home in the water. Since you're new, a bit of wisdom, if at any point you feel like panic might wanna take you for a spin, just keep breathing normally. Force yourself, think about it, and keep breathing normally, and a cooler state of mind will follow with it. Happy🤿!
@mads just wondering why you guys haven't used the airconditioner you installed on board yet. It seems to get pretty hot down there. Then again you might use it at night and not add to video. Just wondering. Smooth sailing
When I did my cert many many years ago, we have something called ditch and dawn. Drop all you gear. Swim to up to the surface, then back down to your gear putting it all back on again. Do they still do something like this still?
It’s great that you’re a Divemaster. PADI is a bit of a production line and you really have to get to Rescue Diver standards to be reasonably safe, especially if diving remotely… And tank? Tank? That would have been 50 press-ups on my Army diving course…tanks are big green clanky things with guns…it’s a bottle or a cylinder :)
I was a bit surprised to see all the stuff the cut from open water since I got mine in the early 90's. We might get Ava signed up for advanced while in the ABC's :)

That’s a good question. Our victron Quattro 5000 easily runs it. Any spike during startup is most likely to quick for me to see on the Cerbo display :)
Great that you got the Icon 100 running directly from batteries. I was led by Coltri to believe that a Mastervolt 3kW inverter (assuming I have the Ah) would not be able to overcome startup amp of the compressor and was seriously thinking of going down the 3phase/VSD route. If possible, please share the details of your electrical/power setup to power it, thanks.
Haha, when diving I cut my lip fur (love it) short. Around 4 mm. That seems to help a lot. I still get a tiny bit of water now and then but it’s fine 🙂
You study the heck out of everything, but in case this is news to you, Loctite does make primers that are especially useful when the application involves ‘inactive’ metals that prevent good ion bonding.
Buoyancy, is not only the weight on your harnes/tank, ankles, air in your suit, but breath control. You would be amazed how much you can go up/down with just your breathing. Dont bicycle kick, just point your toes like a ballerina, your legs will automatically straighten, less effort and go faster.

50/50 White vinegar and alcohol works good to dry ears and keep things healthy.

Hi, great video as usual. My dive shop puts my tanks in a wheelie bin filled with water to keep it cool while being filled. They tell newbies that it is a safety measure.
Are you sure it's to keep them cool, or could it be to slow down the shrapnel in the event of a tank failure?
@@bobadam7021 Yes, they say it is to keep them cool. I have seen the aftermath of tanks that have exploded due to corrosion and a bin full if water would not have helped much.

I have always had ENT problems, when I started diving in 2009, holidays were often spoilt by ear infections. Then I found a product called “Earol”. Often used by professional swimmers, and divers, it is a fine-medical grade oil sprayer which coats the outer ear canal and blocks infectious bugs from being able to infect your outer ear. I have not had an ear infection ever since using this before every dive. Has protected against any ear infections since 2012, and I dive in tropical waters every year.

Try extra virgin olive oil warmed with some crushed garlic in it. 2-3 drops per ear. Might be a good prophylactic to keep ears dry too.

lol, the guy before me made the same recomendation. Will have to be the lever-type cups, because the other style uses evacuation of air to create the vacuum. I have seen these used by Expedition Evans on their hull.

Mads, Grenada is going to be your best option, beautiful island, great area for cruisers and below the Hurricane belt. Two hurricanes in the last sixty years. Bonnie came thru in 2022 but was a tropical storm for Grenada for the most part

For the battery, you can get a 12 volt 'cooler', remove the chiller plate and place it up against the battery. The 'cooler' will draw about the same as a big fan. You can even hook up a thermal switch to have it run in auto mode, cooling down things when the Tropical heat climbs... 😁
Please consider as suggested Montreal and the rest of the great lakes. The trip up and down is often called the great loop. Fresh water sailing is nice, until winter comes by then it is time to sail elsewhere.

I got a Coltri with a gasoline engine. In the instruction manual it is written, that during the first 5 hours, you are only allowed to run it for 10 minutes, then turn off, cool down and another 10 min. Maybe it is different with the electric version.
O.K. on the SCUBA compressor, delighted you went for an electric model, as the petrol motors are very NOISY, last time i was up in the Sea of Cortez a cruising boat with a couple had a petrol powered unit and would run it every afternoon after diving, the noise level was very loud, i would move to the other side of the bay it was so bad, on another note, when i charge my tanks, i have a long charging hose and put my tank in the water, hanging by a line, keeps the tank cool.
Back in my days of boat bottom cleaning, I would use the tide to push me into one side of the hull. Then when the tide changed, and I had taken a break, I went to the other side. Didn't always work as planned (does any boat project?), but it helped a little.

Mads, get one of those Window glass suction cup thingies! use it to make a hold onto the hull.. they also work great when opening floor boards! Just saying! Congrats Ava, ear infections suck.. get well soon.

Hey Mads - I'm curious about your ring anode on the saildrive; did you paint the surface on the drive where the anode is bolted on? If so, are the 2 still electrically connected? Thank you DIY boat-god!
PS: The same thing happened to our Zinc last year on our new-to-us boat. I believe the issue was that loctite 242 was used. No issues after re-installing with 243!

If you add some plumbers tape or teflon tape to the bolts on the zinc it will not vibrate loose.
Good call on the electric compressor. Won't contaminate your air with carbon monoxide. Bonus, you can run it on your kitchen table! Very cool!
I think running it outside of the technical compartment was a one time deal. It's not impossible to move but it's pretty heavy :)
I have had and got different brand lifePo4 and the BMS on any battery fails. I have replaced a few $38 AU aand they work fine and charge A1.

I have been following your adventures since you installed the refleks stove on Obelix. I have my own Maxi 84 sailboat from 1980 that I dabble in handiwork on. I noticed You using butyl tape many times, but whenever I find something here in Denmark, it looks completely different from what you show in your videos. Is it called something different in Danish and where did you find it in Denmark?

Wax earplugs are great to keep water out of your ears when diving. Especially if you are worried about things swimming into your ears. I've been diving since 1987 and used to get ear infections from water in the ear all the time until my mom suggested wax earplugs.

Ava you can add so weights on the upper portion of the tank. That will help getting your body level.
Suggest you rinse out your ears, after diving,/swimming with a product like "Swimmers Ear". That should reduce the future problems. Also have your ears checked for wax plugs. Water gets between the plug and the ear membrane causing infection.
I was once prescribed 0.1% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) ear drops for an after-dive ear infection. It works really well and worth carrying if you intend diving away from a town
I'm hoping it was a one off for Ava. I've never had any issues with ear infections 🤞
She is not describing otitis external but otitis with effusion. That would not be helped with anything you put in the external ear. It is. Caused by pressure effect on the Eustachian tube. Antibiotics don’t really help, only time results in resolution. It can take several months to clear, but usually quicker. This opinion is based on 27 years of diving and 37 years as an Otolaryngologist.

Ava, the more you dive, the more you get it. And once you reach the "fish point" you'll be at home in the water. Since you're new, a bit of wisdom, if at any point you feel like panic might wanna take you for a spin, just keep breathing normally. Force yourself, think about it, and keep breathing normally, and a cooler state of mind will follow with it. Happy🤿!
@mads just wondering why you guys haven't used the airconditioner you installed on board yet. It seems to get pretty hot down there. Then again you might use it at night and not add to video. Just wondering. Smooth sailing

When I did my cert many many years ago, we have something called ditch and dawn. Drop all you gear. Swim to up to the surface, then back down to your gear putting it all back on again.

It’s great that you’re a Divemaster. PADI is a bit of a production line and you really have to get to Rescue Diver standards to be reasonably safe, especially if diving remotely…
And tank? Tank? That would have been 50 press-ups on my Army diving course…tanks are big green clanky things with guns…it’s a bottle or a cylinder :)

Quick question, I’m considering to get the same compressor and wanted to ask how big your inverter is. As far as I remember, during start of the compressor, it peaks 5000w, am I right?
That’s a good question. Our victron Quattro 5000 easily runs it. Any spike during startup is most likely to quick for me to see on the Cerbo display :)
Great that you got the Icon 100 running directly from batteries. I was led by Coltri to believe that a Mastervolt 3kW inverter (assuming I have the Ah) would not be able to overcome startup amp of the compressor and was seriously thinking of going down the 3phase/VSD route. If possible, please share the details of your electrical/power setup to power it, thanks.
I don’t know about the master volt 3000 but our Victron Quattro 5000 runs it easily even in the heat 🙂 We have 300Ah @24V LiFePO4.

Haha, when diving I cut my lip fur (love it) short. Around 4 mm. That seems to help a lot. I still get a tiny bit of water now and then but it’s fine 🙂

You study the heck out of everything, but in case this is news to you, Loctite does make primers that are especially useful when the application involves ‘inactive’ metals that prevent good ion bonding.

Buoyancy, is not only the weight on your harnes/tank, ankles, air in your suit, but breath control. You would be amazed how much you can go up/down with just your breathing. Dont bicycle kick, just point your toes like a ballerina, your legs will automatically straighten, less effort and go faster.
I always used dry ear drops (swimmer ears) after diving. Never got an infection. So how many fills does one get on a filter cartridge?
Maybe Ava should try that :) I've never had an ear issue but we'll keep an eye on Ava and see if she might be more prone to ear issues :)
@@SailLife If the infection recurs, see a Dr. who is a diver. Also, don't forget to replenish the pills you use.
@@SailLife really the only thing the ear drops is it’s only alcohol. As mentioned before alcohol and vinegar works well.
