Freeze dryer is very cool! Secret garden underway! George and Miles comfortable! Brutus growing like a weed ! Life is good!!!! Stay blessed all!!
Hey guys, we’ve been watched ng since the beginning but seldom comment.
We also live off grid and run a medium Harvest right freeze drier. The freeze drier puts out a fair amount of heat. Think an electric heater of about 500 watts running continuously. So, the cold room may not be your best location!
Prefreezng can save a lot of time running the freezer. When you have it in frozen food you should start the machine so it gets below freezing before taking the trays out of your regular freezer. This keeps the food from beginnings ng to thaw. Of course you can just let the freeze drier re-freeze the trays!
Good luck with your homestead.
Naturally you don't want the dog in the growing bed-just the dog in him and NO is the perfect solution! The comment section is going to glow like radiation but if you want to help Brutus bump him with the loader on the tractor. I've never had a farm dog fear my machinery after that but they certainly get the idea! If he doesn't learn to stay back on his own life will be very long for you constantly watching out for him! This bumping process will enhance his overall education/intelligence level dramatically! Truly Enjoy the channel!
A little nudge is nothing, a trip under the tires is death. I think your method is logical and wise. Not everyone will understand this situation because they haven’t been up running equipment for endless hours.its just a matter of time until you don’t see your pet and a good days work turns into a sad day of tragedy. Best they know that machine =danger.😊
So right 😊
Dogs can tell if you're serious by the tone of your voice, just like children. Be firm when giving a command. A STRONG "No" sends a message.
Totally agree @jimstewart8927. We have had several farm dogs and we work with big equipment. A simple nudge will put an end to that. Otherwise, he will be either hurt really bad or dead. Stock animals need very firm commands to keep them safe as well. Al is not firm enough with him. Even though they have not had Brutus in the house, they are still treating him like a pet and not a work animal. Al was worried about Brutus barking at the new cattle as soon as they were off the trailer. Brutus knew instinctively that they were intruders and he was doing what he was bred to do. He saw them as a threat but will instinctively soon learn they are part of the farm as well.
I agree totally with this, couple little bumps and he will stay away from the tractor, but when training him to do this be extremely careful. And I would use your front tires because you can see him exactly,
Gina...what I do is put the trays in the freezer and then I fill them up while they are "in" there so there is no moving and spilling them to the freezer. Works really well. You will love your FD. I have mine going none stop. Love the new additions to your homestead...but Brutus is my favorite. Love seeing him grow. Your living the life we all would like to have. I saw you put your eggs in the FD but you should turn it on and wait the 15 minutes for is to do its thing and THEN put you food in. Its definitely a learning curve. There is plenty of info on You Tube Eagle, Idaho
The stacking lids help too.
With the beet seeds soak them in a jar overnight, when they sink they are ready to sow, I rarely thin out beets as they are pretty tolerant to overcrowding and the minibeets are great pickled for salads.
Myles needs the Green Scratch post that was left on the other Homestead !
Brutus needs a balance beam in pasture !
MAKE. SURE you leave the door open after using the freeze drier until the machine reaches room temperature, or condensation will cause mold and mildew in the machine.
Good tip! Thanks.
You might be a homesteader if:
You brush your cattle before you brush your own hair.
I love it! Those boys are gorgeous and so gentle. ❤

Good 🌄 morning! I had forgotten what day of the week it is! That's too busy!😂
@CCRider5312 I have followed Lumnah Acres for years and they are my favorite homesteaders. 🌱👍
Hi CC my friend!
G’day 😊 love seeing the highland cattle on the farm now. They are a docile and chilled breed. Soon they will be lying in your lap and snuggling with you like I’ve seen it on social media with those who also own highland cattle 😉😆 getting a freeze dryer is awesome! So much cheaper to make your own MREs for sure 👍 love how Brutus is constantly supervising your activities 🥰❤️
Gooooooooood Morning Agnes. It will be interesting to see how the highland cattle settle in.
Good 🌄 morning, Agnes! Decidedly moist here in Minnesota! Getting those water tables up. I hope that you and yours are well and happy!
@@damogranheart5521 G’day DH 😊 have a great rest of the week and weekend!
Good AM, From MN...The boys look right at home already..
Just a tip on the eggs, I pour them in the trays while they are in the freeze dryer, just pulled out a little bit. Saved me from making a mess because mine is in the basement. Another trick is freezing them first.
She froze them first.
Gina was absolutely right to nip any unwanted behaviours from Brutus in the bud. He's still very much a playful puppy but his LGD training is of ultimate importance to his success in your lives. A firm correction the first time he does anything undesirable like climbing up into your raised beds lets him know it's not a playtime activity.
I haven't watched in a while but HamishandKyloe are a pair of pet Highland cattle buddies with their own YT channel. They look a lot like Miles and George but bigger with longer horns. Perhaps Miles likes Jazz music and George likes Country & Western after Miles Davis and George Jones - LOL.
I believe you might wanna put that freeze drier in another location... they put out a lot of heat when they are in use... Don't wanna warm up your cold room. The sooner you teach Brutus to respect big equipment the better. Dont want him getting hurt some day I am sure. Homestead is looking great!!!
The Cold room is going to get the deep freezers now taking up space in Harvest House, so a mini split AC is planned for shops cold room !
We have been using freeze dryers for a few years now, make sure you package as soon as you take it out, also putting it in the cool room it does produce a lot of heat so beware that!!
I don't recommend putting the freeze drier in your "COLD" storage room. It generates a LOT of heat. We have the large Harvest Right and it raises the temperature of our mudroom by around 15º. God bless all y'all.
Cold storage room gets mini split AC, including deep freezers moved there to make more room available at harvest House !
Highland/Jersey crosses are simply beautiful. I like this plan.
You can freeze dry almost anything, including Stew's, chili, spaghetti with sauce. You will love this freeze dryer.
I'm so happy that you guys got a freeze dryer. Freeze dryers are amazing. You just forgot to say that once you seal it in the marlar bags they're good for 25 to 30 years. They are wonderful you will love it Gina. If You grind them into a powder it's easier to use them. Now All You need is Another Heated Big greenhouse. You Still Need A Fence To Keep The Deer and Other Animals Out, To keep Them From Eating Them.🙏🕊️🥀🌹🌼🌻☕💜❤️
Zoomies on the hay pile!!! That Brutus is so cute
Ahh, the sound of the Loon ❤️❤️❤️ I'm loving the "secret garden" progress. Looks beautiful even in it beginning stages.
I enjoy seeing more of the animals. Brutus is already working on his big dog bark and he is pure joy on his hay stack. It's always awesome to see Hope and Daisy. You are my favorite homesteaders. 🥰👍
I have had my HR Med unit for 6 months and I have done beef, Chicken, Shrimp, veggies, and one thing which we have abundance of Lemons. Our tree produces so much that this was the first year we had a way to keep our full harvest. We dried over 100 gallons of picked lemons that we sliced using our meat slicer and have a years worth of lemon slices that are better than fresh. Our sons like to eat them with the rind on and they immediately give you huge burst of flavor. Great for all our needs and great for tea. You have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I also power mine with solar and no problem.
I've had my HR FD 2 years now, and love having another food preservation process. There is a learning curve.
One, it will change the temperature in the room it is in by 10 or more degrees, so having it in a cold room would probably not be a good idea if your goal for the cold room is long term veggie storage.
2, keep a better drain valve on hand for when the one that came with your machine fails and you get an error code.
3, program an extra 24 hours extra dry time so you don't have to worry about not being by the FD when the cycle ends.
4, take out as much oxygen as you can b4 sealing your mylar bags, and add another seal above the first seal. Don't ever package cold or icy food. The FD will go into freeze mode at the end of the process if you don't get to the machine when the run ends, don't package it cold.
5, keep an eye on your ice rings and make sure they go all the way front to back on the chamber walls, if they don't you probably have a freon leak.
6, get extra trays and tray lids
7, fat in milk will cause FD milk to go rancid quickly
8, FD milk duds are really, really good
Have fun!
You are going to LOVE that freeze dryer! I love mine and use it tons. Helpful hint, put your trays in the freezer then pour in your eggs (liquids) it makes much less mess 😂
Doesn't work well for audience watching the video, since filming Gina displayed what viewers needed to see then put-up with the inconvenience of not spilling when moving to freezer !
@@4Classie definitely. But I was sure grateful for the tip when I got mine. Even if she can’t Utilize the tip for videos it is worth knowing for everyday use. It wasn’t a “you’re doing it wrong “ comment but a “congratulations! I’m excited for you! This has been my experience “ comment 😊
How many times we’ve looked at these but WOW….the initial layout is significant enough that we’ve never pulled the trigger. Maybe one day I’ll hit on power ball and I’ll grab one. We have solar but it’s not battery off grid and frankly…NH has been so cloudy and rainy in the lakes region… that it’s really not advantageous to buy a 61,000 dollar system and STILL be paying the grid. Wishing now we’d never fallen into the solar rabbit hole. Maybe then we’d been able to buy a harvest freeze drier.
We know what they are capable of so you’ll benefit tremendously from it.
You’ve still got high tunnel green houses to get up.
I have watched several channels that have Highland coos and Miles and George are going to be great on your farm! The are very chill and gentle and are amazing grazer/foragers! So glad you got a freeze dryer. I can't afford one yet, not even on sale so I'm saving up for one. I'm totally off grid so solar has to come first though. Many blessings, Texas Deb ❤️
Myles as stated by Lumnah Acres in an earlier reply.
I'm watching that freeze dryer stuff. It will be very interesting to me to see how things turned out using your freeze dryer. I think it's an excellent way to store food for long periods of time. And your new fellows you added our beautiful looking animals. Now that's the way you teaching animal that people are pleasant to be around, by brushing frequently and paying them lots of attention so they get to know you. It's too bad more people don't understand this. It will not be long and you'll have all four of your cattle following when you were around as if they were trained puppy dogs. That way you're assured that they will not run off by themselves if they ever get loose by accident. You're setting an excellent example for other homesteaders! You've come along way from your initial Homestead. I remember Olivia being very young when you started that. I do hope she'll be back with you this summer on camera I mean. Best wishes to you both! ❤🎉😮
you mentioned placing the FD in your cold storage room. Just be aware that the freeze dryer will generate a lot of HEAT during 24-36 hour process. I have the same unit. It will heat up that closed room quickly.
I have their medium Freeze dryer. I love it. The new one has one extra tray instead of Ford has five now. So you’re gonna have a lot of space to freeze dry. Sometimes I would love to have a five tray other times. It’s like I gotta wait a little while like right now to fill up the fourth tray. But it’s in the freezer so I figure out that fourth one no problem. I’m waiting for my mango to be honest with you. Sometimes I use it a lot in a week. I don’t do anything for a few weeks, but I love the Freeze dryer, especially when I get the things on special and I get a lot of applesor apricots and so the pineapples freeze dried
When sailing half way around the World about 50 years ago, I learned a simple method to preserve complete eggs (in shells).
** Pot of boiling water at sea level. (Boiling temperature decreases at significant altitude so add a second or two to the immersion if needed).
** Grab an egg with two tablespoons (or suitably sized kitchen tongs). Immerse in water for 2-3 seconds and take out.
"Mississippi-one, Mississippi-two, Mississippi-three".
** Pack in standard egg cartons or other. Then store in low temperature environment (our low temperature was the bilge) for up to 9 months.
** When you want to use, check the integrity of the egg by briefly shaking near your ear. If fluid movement detected - rare - then discard. Else fine to use.
The reason why this works well is that the thin membrane just beneath the shell coagulates and forms an effective environmental shield from ingress and egress of gas and moisture.
Back in the day, eggs were also preserved by covering with a viscous oil or glycerin. For reference - I believe this was just as effective, if not more so, than the above method.
We used sodium silicate, commonly called "water glass"on freshly laid eggs. It is now recommended to use hydrated lime water. Can't use store bought eggs because the bloom has been washed off. Is your method for store bought or fresh laid eggs?
@@paulcallicoat7597 The eggs were purchased in both Portugal and Greece at different times. The message is that assuming a recent laid time (unknown), preservation is quite simple.
Thanks! I'm going to try this in my city apartment!
I buy eggs, but sometimes don't eat many. Then I'm scared to try.
@@lindajohnson4204 ~ For just a few eggs, test them by submerging them in cold or room-temperature water. Bad eggs will float; good eggs will sink.
In the 60 I worked for egg Co and we oil the eggs , went on Navy ships
Good luck with your freeze dryer! I find that running freeze dried eggs through a food processor or a blender really makes them easy to store in either Mylar or vacuum sealer bags. It also make the eggs reconstitute easily. You'll want to experiment a little to see how much water to add back based on how tight or runny you want your beaten eggs to be.
Take care and God Bless.
Gina, you pour them at the unit. Messy otherwise. Plus, if you carry the trays and eggs (liquid) to the regular freezer, then pour the eggs, and then pre freeze before the Freeze Dryer no mess.
🤓
Gina did the eggs for best viewership, not for ease of process, the camera dictated what was needed, and proved to bother people ( like you ) to force them to comment complaints, so it proved to be twice beneficial, by adding RUclips viewership time spent !
That freeze drier will be such a game changer for y’all. Brutus will be such a good guard dog and a garden keeper as well lol
From experience… that compost didn’t get in between your wood using dump on top method. It will sink so much this year. And you need some hoops and netting or your dog/ deer/ etc will munch at table height 😋
Gena, have you ever explored Liming eggs to preserve them in big jars as the Amish do? They last that way for a very long time until needed.
How about food preservation by pickling? It's a great source for prebiotic required for good gut health.
Have you considered building a drying shed for medicinal plants? And have you thought about growing willow trees for natural pain relief? Just chew new shoot bark and it's like aspirin.
One other tip. How about aqua culture, growing plants in water nourished by natural fish poo, two sources of food in one?
Willow is the source of aspirin boiling it is better than chewing it drink as tea
, as it is bitter you can add your favorite sweetner.
Apologies for being pedantic but her name is Gina.
You could use a lift cart. Harbor Freight has one that lifts 500 pounds. It would cone in handy, moving and lifting heavy objects, like the freeze dryer.
what you said about only raising 100 onions because thats all you might eat is really telling about where you are and where you're going and what its all about. That was an enlightening thing you said.
Have a water tank by the garden. Letting the water warm up a day or two makes a difference that is worth the extra step. Dollar store red pepper keeps a lot of critters away from your plants.
Speaking of dairy bulls being mean, we were in the dairy business until I was around 17 years old. Our holstein bull chased me around the pasture one day. I think he was playing because he never got very close to me but I wasn’t taking any chances. A neighboring dairy farmer was attacked by his holstein bull and it nearly killed him. They had to kill the bull to get it off of him. My experience with holstein bulls and other bull breeds is that they can be perfectly calm one minute and be very agitated the next for some reason.
Never trust any bull! Black angus were the worst for us!
Freeze dryer tip: for liquids, place the trays in freezer first then pour liquid into tray. So much easier!

Put them in a blender and blend them and put them in canning jars. Hidden heights farms does it that way. They will last for years.
When I compare the way my grandparents used to insure their food supply to the ways it can be done now, it’s amazing. Food storage is so much safer and less time is needed for preparation. This is an interesting video for future reference. Thanks for the info and the memories!
Good morning everyone
I was raised on a dairy farm. We had. Registered Holstein one put my mother and brother and I up a tree in the yard for hours until Dad got home. He had to drive in the door get in the house get a gun and shoot the bull he was a big registered bull we had his 2 years he went mad. The meat was bad. We couldn't even eat or smell it cooking. I remember having 2 more bulls you didn't go around. But the ones that we raised and handle alot from little did good.

A friend recently gave us a pack of FD bananas.
Felt like an astronaut with the light wafer on the tongue, a little hydration and it turned back into a banana. I often vacuum seal herbs and spearmint from the garden, for baking and fresh tea while camping.
Great team work. Having projects for rainy days is a good idea!
Ive had a freeze dryer for 3 1/2 years, i love mine.
I just know that y’all are going to have a lot of ideas for the freeze dryer.
The new bull and the steer have such beautiful coats! I want hair that pretty when I grow up.
I hope you have a good time with your freeze dryer, I've had one for 2yrs now . We love all the space we save in storage & how nice it is to always have what I need. God bless & have fun🙏🤗
Living Traditions Homestead did a useage/price comparison on the Freeze Dryer that you may find interesting. Maybe 1 1/2 years ago. Even though you are on solar it could give you useful information.
You can use mason jars to store freeze dried items in I have done herbs and made my own garlic powder I don't use a oxygen absorber in those and it works fine. Herbs are much better freeze dried than dehydrated more flavor.
Yor cows could do with a scratching post. You also need to provide salt and mineral blocks for them.
The purchase price of the Harvest right is in the extreme range. Running a freeze-dryer is also very expensive. The resulting reconstituted food is not very appetizing.
I would never again opt for a freeze-dryer.

I’ve heard that to use the eggs you can put in jar on counter for daily use. So convenient in the winter when the chickens are not producing as many eggs. Would work the same for the milk. Great idea.
"I like it!" So organized & smart!
Brooke and Jason from Cog Hill Farm have this freeze dryer and they love it. They have even freeze dried candy. I think you are really going to love this.
You should’ve did what they said with the eggs it works a lot better. You put your trays in and leave it out just a little bit and pour the eggs in so you don’t spell it trying to get it to the Freeze dryer. And I don’t know how many eggs I’ve done for myself as well as one of my friends chickens. And that’s what they recommended so be careful with moving your eggs because you might spill because of the liquid.
Maybe put a water in shop, and garden???😊
I've had the medium FD for about 3 yrs now. I usually freeze my stuff ahead of time. Sometimes, even pouring the liquid into the trays while they're in the freezer. It's a lot easier transferring them to the FD that way, too. Sometimes I'll toss the eggs or whatever into the food processor and make the freeze dried stuff into powder before bagging them up.
Love the new livestock…🐮🐮🐮🐮
I love my freeze dryer, it’s great for leftovers. I bet you find lots of uses for it.

Kyle one little tip for you when you stain the great stairs is to mix a little sand in the stain and it will give you more grip on the stairs but you need to stir the pot each time you dip the brush as the sand soon settles down. There’s one other thing you could do to improve the stairs and thats to sign then before staining them you could even put something like “Made by Kyle Doss in 04/2024” and that’s about all your can do Well Done Kyle uu

Good afternoon DamogranHeart! Beautiful sunny day today. We had a frost overnight but that was the last frost expected for the next week. I had to cover a pot of flowers I planted that I'm going to bring home with me. I had to plant something. I have starts too. I did broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, and baby Bok choy. I plan to plant a garden wherever I end up. My husband sent me the divorce papers. I'm fine with them. I won't sign until I get back since I need to have access to the property to get my things. Life will be so much better without his disappointment in me all the time. I'll have my body back from the accident. Things can only get better. I'll have my ducks. They are laying an egg a day now! I can raise new chickens if he wants to keep the ones in the barn now. I have bought all the birds myself. There are 16 more chickens this year that I bought last year. They should be laying too! I'll be free of him! Free at last!
@StoneKathryn Wow! Kudos on the starters and plants! I find that gardening lifts my spirits and makes me healthier 😌!
Double WOW! To the divorce news! Toxic relationships are so draining. I threw a divorce 🥳 🎉 🪅 🎊 party!
Here's to healthier, happier times! It will take work, of course, but you are worth it!
I will be gardening today because it will be raining tomorrow. Mostly planting potted perennials (rhubarb), and herbs! (Edit) I mean that I am preparing for the plants to come! Sorry about that! Blessings on your endeavors and have a great weekend!
@@damogranheart5521 I got rhubarb given to me by my Osteopath that worked on me today. He got the bone that was popping around my knee finally put back into place! It's wonderful. My sister and I are going to make him a strawberry and rhubarb pie! It's great when you can find someone that can put your body back together. He used his elbow to force it back into place. It didn't even hurt! My left knee feels normal now. I could have never figured out how to do that. Prepping for plants is the most work! I hope they arrive in good shape. Take care! Blessings on your garden and you too!
Hi.... AL and GINA THANKS YOU FOR SHOWING YOUR VIDEO HOMESTEAD BYE 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋👍👍👍
Cardboard is good for raised garden containers
Morning Lumnah family, I really enjoy all your videos. Comming from a farming background don't get me wrong here but shouldn't a stock protection dog spend time with stock whenever we see him he's with Al and Gena.
The stock barn all that steel inside you could have build a shed double the size. Timber particians have been used for hundreds of years and are easy to modify when you've more animals.
I'm sure you've thought of this, but how are you going to keep every bear, deer, moose, racoon, rabbit (do you have rabbits?) mouse and all other wildlife of the garden bed? Not to mention possums, turkeys, etc.
Great Day in the Morning 🌄 🙌 😊 !!! Hello 👋 from down South !!! 😊😊😊
Gina, Cog Hill Farm RUclips has that same Harvest Right freeze drier and Mrs. Cog Hill did TONS of videos on crazy things they used it on, like precooked chicken cubes for salads and marshmallows. You may want to check it out for ideas.
The freeze dryer! I think I have you beat- I’ve owned mine for 4 years and STILL have not installed it. Hubs promises this will be the year that he builds a cold room/storage area that we’ll put it in.
Loved the gardening
You’re going to love freeze drying the herbs!!! They come out great! 🙏🏻❤️
The freeze dryer is a wonderful addition to your homestead.
Always loved your garden videos glad you’re getting back to it.
