🤗 You make the rather boring process of sowing seeds a joy to watch ... because you’re hilarious 😆. Thanks for sharing and starting my day with a big chuckle❣️ Here’s to germination SUCCESS!
You’ve covered so much in a quick 30. I struggle with the week counting, in real time, but to have to time travel to adjust the zone difference is trippy. You are just 4 weeks behind, as I straddle a 6/7, and usually err to the cooler temp. This explanation was great. This will be my first year with cool flowers, and it’s been like a learning new language. Kudos to all those that share their successes and failures. I blend my veggies with flowers with herbs, using raised beds, in ground, trellising and now a 70’ cut flower bed. Said happy birthday to lisianthis yesterday and the rest of the seed packets are lined up ready to start in the next weeks. Love watching your journey.
I love Fern!😊 Your dogs are so cute! Everything you do is so enjoyable to watch even if it's a passed video. Nicole, you are easily my favorite RUclipsr!!
I had my first cry while looking at a pack of mixed color cut sunflower seeds...I was lost in the thought that this is my first time growing flowers and I can't wait to see their beauty grow
Aww! You make me think of my dear grandma. She loved nasturtiums, or as she called them, nasty sturtiums. And I do believe that's her rocking chair in your garage. Oh, the stories I heard sitting at her feet as she rocked in her chair.
This is so sweet. Thank you so much for sharing Kate, touched my heart. I inherited this rocking chair from my step-grandmother after she passed and it's my favorite chair.
Please keep teaching me how to recycle garbage. I'm collecting meat trays. I have two trays of strawberry seeds on the window sill and two trays of onion seedlings hardening off right now. I'll save those to go containers, too. Why didn't I think about the humidity dome? Genius.
I had just planted seeds in take-out containers today and didn't put the lids on to help them germinate. Pause video...put lids on....back to video. Thank you. I am learning from you!
I love how you get excited about take out containers. I can tell my family I am not crazy for having a collection of "one day to be reused containers" 😄
Hi Nicole! I watched Living Traditions Homestead new video on deer fence and thought of you. What they have done might be a bit too much for you, but the system could be worth watching for eliminating deer problem. If you find some time give it a try, it might help.
i am using bootstrap farmer trays for the first time too, i really like them. i guess the test will be if they survive the neglect i plan to inflict upon them
I love counting seeds in the winter/ early spring when there’s nothing much to do in the garden. Baker Creek is the company that I’ve found gives the most “ bonus seeds”.
Nicole, you have such great tips. I was just staring at a Chinese takeaway container and thinking of throwing it away. Now it is headed for my garden supplies!
I started some cherry rose 🌹 nasturtiums in my winter sowing and they have done great they took awhile but every seed germinated. They germinated at different rates though. This is my first time starting this plant and when I saw the cherry rose I needed it. I’m starting some flower seeds this afternoon as well. It’s such a fun time of year!
I WS my nasturtiums in a small Amazon box set inside a plastic bag and grew them on my porch....they’re four in tall now and all I’m going to do is set the box in the ground, tear sides down and cover....whalla no shock..... I’m so excited we got the cattle panel greenhouse up yesterday in the high winds...of coarse not the plastic....now I’m going to buy some geraniums and other plants to make starts from.... I’m trying to design a rope trellis for the side of my art studio to grow Vining Lazy Susan vines...my birdhouse gourds are two feet long already....and inside the greenhouse I want to plant a vining veggie to shade the sun...... I am actually happy my husband is finally getting in the grow mode and already planning another greenhouse he wants to build...lol
I just potted up 150 forsythia and 100 black pussy willows cuttings for my retirement nursery, many more to go.... Now sitting here, listening to you, seeding tomatoes and peppers and coleus to sell in a few weeks. Spring has sPrUnG!!!!
👏 So exciting! I started to get behind but this weekend I got my cosmos, basil, bachelor buttons, celosia, honeywort, pincushion, love in a mist, Baby's Breath, feverfew, ammonium, dill, love in a puff, & my mahogany splendor hibiscus all started 😁 So I'm all caught back up!
Here in zone 5-5b Ontario they are forcasting a warmer Spring. May 15 is our usual last frost but rule around here is never safe until May 24. This year I've been sowing as if May 15 might actually be the safe by date if not earlier. 🤞🏻😊👍🏻 It will be a welcome change.
@@camfleming3191 Hi! As I'm listening to the winds howling and the Woodstove on 😁 My plan is to start hardening off the cool weather stuff after April 3. Wishing us both good luck 🤞🏻
Absolutely love my Bootstrap Farmer trays - they all work together flawlessly and should last for many many years - for me, I do not garden anywhere near the size to which you farm - but they are the only trays I will buy.
So early 😆😆😆 I love it!!! Omg the collection of take out containers I have lol I’ve been saving them for soooo long it’s ridiculous, but they are so useful for so many things!!
I am loving my bachelor buttons. I started them last October (z9a south Louisiana) and for the past month they have been producing like crazy. They last for-ev-ah in a vase. Give them another try! However I am only growing about 10 that seem like they have multiplied times 10...so I get what you are saying about getting tangled.
We had the most beautiful March. Weather was 60-70 degrees most days. Now this week's forecast is not looking good at all. Calling for snow, calling for nights down in the 20's. Such a bummer! Would love to see a early spring garden tour. I love to see new spring growth!
Those are beautiful nasturtiums!! I have a jewel mix. No pink though 😢. Lol on your labeling. I label everything and still manage to grow things random that I don’t know. 😂I like the Jessica dahlias
Next time just order directly from the Bootstrap website. They have free shipping over $49. My ONLY problem with them is they’re harder to get the plants out of because they are so sturdy. But, the pros outweigh the cons.
Those takeout containers are available in bulk from Costco. Using those containers is very similar to winter sowing, it has a greenhouse effect on the seeds so they germinate more quickly.
I've got my cut flower beds all ready for direct sowing seeds. I'm nervous about frost. Our temps have been pretty mild this spring, but knowing my luck we'll have an April snow. 😂 I'll be getting my Dahlia ans Gladiolus in soon. I'm getting excited for warmer temps and flowers!
Yep our tulips are done and the daffodils are blooming!! My last frost date is this upcoming Saturday!! I'm so ready to plant some zinnias!! I just cant wait to see my field turn into beautiful blooms!
Have you tried trying to start germination in the instapot? I haven’t tried but in my IP groups said it works after 24 hours. I love your channel as it’s super entertaining!
When I woke up this morning and saw snow on the ground my first thought was about your Ranunculus! I looked at the 10 day forecast and it looks like we still have a couple of crappy weather days and nights to worry about.
Girl ... I also use strawberry containers ! And to go salad from Zaxbys , and jumbo muffin containers ! Even the hubs is like “ can you plant seeds in this ? “ holding plastic tray from cookies ....Yaaaas 🤩🌻
Every time I heard...Nematodes...I can't help but think of Sandy Cheeks and Spongebob hunting one down. I didn't know Larkspur needed cold, I sowed mine in those big salad greens containers, put it in the freezer then the fridge, now wondering if they need some amount of light.?
Next time try roughing up the nasturtium seeds before planting them. I scrubbed mine across my wooden chicken coop last year before planting them. Yep, I did lol. I read somewhere that it would increase the germination rate and I swear it worked! And high five for reusing the take out and fruit containers for seed starting. I've been using the grape, strawberry and cherry tomatoes containers for years. I learned to keep them out the sun (heat) because the will warp and melt easily.
I DOOOOO WANT A SPRING TOUR!!!! All my Daffs died in the freezaggedon! 😥😢😭😭😭 So I REALLY NEEEEEED TO SEE YOUR SPRINGTIME YUMMIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEEEEEASE!!!!
My big giant Live Oaks that are never supposed to be naked, well every single leaf DIED in the freeze, and they have only just broken out with some new leaves THIS WEEK ! Phewwww!!! THEY'RE ALIVE!!! I love Bootstrap trays. They are strong and definitely not flimsy. Haha...great mind thinks alike. I grew my seeds in salad containers and Chinese takeouts too. Just Bec they have tops on 😜
Hey Nicole, do you have any tips for planning the garden? For example, do you plant all the "one hit wonders" together, so you can pull them up and succession plant? Any advice would be appreciated ;)
Last year I bought 10 of those same Bootstrap Farmer cell trays & bottom trays. The corner did break off on a couple trays in their first season of use, so although the quality is really great, don’t assume that they’re indestructible (like I did.)
Fyi. Sams club has 'meal prep' containers exact same thing as the take out but black bottoms for like less than $10 & there are like 30 or something ridiculous
I felt like I started sweet peas way way too early -- My last frost is the same as your last. I definatly messed up and started some way too early. But I am so grateful for your videos! If I start sweet peas now ... will they bloom in the summer. I have a hard time understanding the sweet pea flower situation. If you file a spot on the Nasturtium seeds with a nail file or nick them with a sharp knife they will germinate much faster and better.
Thank you!
I did that with my lupine as well and then soaked them for a bit. They germinated in 24 hours.
I love Fern!😊 Your dogs are so cute! Everything you do is so enjoyable to watch even if it's a passed video. Nicole, you are easily my favorite RUclipsr!!

Second video in my first day with you... your son convince me to stay :) you are a hard working mom and I identified myself in it

A tour would be great! Call it "The Wicked Early Spring Tour" 😂😂
Pause video....I just dug out a strawberry container from the recycling bin! ...maybe we will order take-out tomorrow bhaaa!
I'm still waiting for daffodils and tulips here, too. I think those of us who live in colder climates appreciate spring more!!!
Oh! Also soaked gomphrena overnight. Sprouted in one day! Woohoo!
Thank you so much for inspiration. Enjoy watching your videos so much.
Those puppers! 💓

If you're interested. You can pick up the take out containers from bjs.

Thanks for the heads up on the dahlia seedlings. I’ll know to pot them up sooner and make sure to give my sprouts lots of space.
I like that you keep your potting soil in a storage tub! My problem is How do you prevent fungus gnats??? They’re driving me buggy! 🤪
