For the first time, I think this work is too long to listen to, so here are a few things to listen for.
The first movement is an exotic piece of music that uses the "raga," a mode of Indian music. It is very attractive that the oriental and melancholic melody by strings and alto flute, which is similar to his ballet "Salome." [01:10] Also interesting is the sound of tubular bells, which is rare in Ifukube's music. [11:07]
If you like Ifukube's film music or the 3rd mov. of his "Sinfonia Tapkaara," you will love the second movement. Of the three parts and introduction, the first and third parts are very exciting music. [19:45] [26:13] The scene depicts the Buddha's confrontation with the temptations of the devil, and the chorus joins in to create a frenetic sound.
In the third movement, which praises the enlightened Buddha, a magnificent world of sound unfolds. Experiencing a solemn moment with a sounding orchestra and chorus is one of the real pleasures of listening to Ifukube's music. [33:13] [37:35] The piece ends with a peak of religious ecstasy!

Very interesting Your suggestions. In truth, I listen to Ifukube with the idea to learn from Him, so I accept this piece's lenght. It will require a long time to be mastered. Sadly this year - due to some familiar problems - I think I will not make any repeated listening to the Master's works. This notwithstanding I have just taken the score, which arrived today. It is a wonderful reproduction of the autograph, it seems to me. Cheers from Genova, Italy!

How great to have another recording of this marvelous, meditative masterpiece, I had only known the 1989 live recording previously. Thanks!

I really appreciate you posting this, and especially all the info you included. I am new to Ifukube's music - came in thru Godzilla, but as a Buddhist am finding this piece to be really fascinating and effective, especially part 1. Thank you!

The performace you suggested above does not have sonority enough, which means somewhat dull. Sorry.
