Ok this is our LAST case review for the year ... be prepared for Case Awards of 2017 coming soon!
-D.
Can you review cooler master mb600l next year?
Yea Boiiiiiiiii
HardwareCanucks fractal define r6 won didn't it? Haha I think so. I don't even need a case and I might go buy it and swap everything out haha. Wish I had a tank to do it on.
I wish you tested difference in temperatures with top cover closed and removed.
Anyway, amazing case as always from Fractal.
Hopefully they take the same approach to a refresh of the nano s, that would definitely make it to the top of my potential case list.
Your intros lately are just something else!
thanks dude :) That 120D light is inspiring ha plus never underestimate the proper use of 120 slo-mo
HardwareCanucks No 120 on my G80 :(
well it is what you should expect from someone who is not a daily vlogger or those guys doing shitty challenges and calling themselves a gang or whatever with a bunch of 10 y/o kids as fanboys/girls
Gio Gargiulo / The Nerd Herd I think what helps is he loves is work and the money comes second. He doesn't post videos just to get views like a lot of channels are starting to do.
IMO their intros are always something else, almost every single time. You can see feel the love and passion.
I upgraded to this Case a week ago. damn its good and worth every penny!
I had a CM HAF 912 Plus before and was really pleased with that too. When i bought it 5 years ago.
Fractal has done it again! Classic look with lots of fantastic fratures, the only thing missing is an itx version which I would buy in a heart beat!
I do own Define C and while building system in it is quite easy, so is in the most of the cases of that price range. They are virtually all the same.
Most of the main features of this case wouldn't even make sense at the mini-ITX size... it could definitely be argued that their Nano S could use an update - I'd like to see a new version with a PSU shroud, tempered glass sidepanel, and maybe a vertical main PCI slot (the GPU wouldn't be airflow choked since that mount could be centered in the middle of the case in such a configuration).
Robo, the Define series looks clean, while maintaining good airflow. Other cases at this price point and higher than have "clean" looks choke your system. Also, Fractal doesn't waste their time on RGB, which many people prefer.
mini C is your choice and not a bad one, either.
Putting a vertical GPU below an mITX mobo would need an almost full-height case anyway; what you'd want is a Node 202 with a vented acrylic window if you wanted to not completely defeat the purpose of mITX's compact form factor. To take advantage of the reduced height requirement of mITX like in the Nano S, you'd vertically mount the GPU in front of the mobo and use a CPU liquid cooler in the limited space between the two boards.
The five biggest updates from the R6 I'd like to see on the Nano sitting on my desk now are the PSU shroud, tool-less quick-release side panels, tool-less tempered glass, and push-button modu-vent with removable fan/rad bracket. I wonder if that front panel IO upgrade can be retrofit to older cases like the Nano? My IO now is limited to only two USB 3.0 and audio jacks that sound like shit (EMI? Damaged header cable? Poor audio feed from mobo sound circuit to AC93 header?). Although, I suppose mITX doesn't really have enough room for the additional headers to take advantage of more IO.
Oh! Come to think of it, the chunky USB 3.0 header cable is cumbersome and bent at an uncomfortable angle because on my mobo the header is directly obstructed by my Noctua HSF, which has only enough height clearance for standard height RAM modules. And it's blue instead of black, so it sticks out visually if it's not completely obscured like it is in my configuration.
I think this is the most complete case of this year, it has a lot of posibilities for any person and just a few minor complains but affordable.
Bad airflow
I got the R5... base case for the $ hands down. Been building gaming rigs since the mid 90's.
Glass side panel mount...10/10
Currently rocking the define R5 titanium window, may have to grab the R6 gunmetal TG with type c hub. HC's review of the R5 is why I got in the first place! Thank you for another great case review!
Such a great case company, I love Fractal ! I have the R4 and it's the best in term of modularity, ease of use, classy style and silence.
Yeah I’m sold!!!! I’ve already decided this will be my very next case purchase!
Other reviewers review the case, but you add that SWEET SWEET cinematography to the video and that's why I'm here :D Good job!
Went for the steel sided case (no window) Its great, best case I have ever owned!
By far the best case, since it supports 6 hdds stock, is modular and is not a super tower.....
I would love to see a custom loop done by you guys to show off your pc building talent. I think it would be cool if you did a custom loop in this case.
Holy shit!! It comes in white YEEEEES this is my new case hands down thank you fractal you knocked it out of the park with this one
Has to be the best implementation of tempered glass yet!
I was going to get a Meshify or S340 Elite and then I discovered this case. It's $50 extra, but it's definetely worth it, especially for the future with all of it's features because I plan to add more hard drives and do my own water cooling.
This is the second mATX case for the year that gets the Dam Good award, other one being the Phanteks mATX Evolve TG. This year I wish for something like Dmitry and Eber picks!
The last and the best case of 2017! Thank you Fractal Design. ;-)
I have a R5, I am going to purchase this.
Thinking of new case, probably Fractal's Meshify. Not sure about cooling with closed front with just vents on sides. EDIT: After watching whole video without skipping parts, looks like my worries about front airflow intake choking were unfounded. Good job
I am so upset that I did not wait 2 weeks longer, I pulled the trigger on the Fractal D -Meshify C instead, had I known I would have gotten this one in White.
Links to everything but the actual case. Classy
Actually that removable front IO is perfect for Test benches.
Just got one this week and transfered all my existing components into it yesterday. I can't fit a 280 rad on top because it's interfering with my Trident Z RAM. Oh well. Guess I'm mounting one to the front and one on the bottom. Maybe I'll add a 360 to the top later on. I'm still waiting on my fittings and blocks though.
Very nice case indeed. It has all the detail i asked for👍
For $30 extra that should also have a finger print reader on that IO panel..
Sold, this is my next case
Looking at the h440 beside me and then the define r6.. I can't really see the move forward.Yes they changed some things here and there to adapt to the needs of 2017 and 2018. They say never change a winning formula. But for me the define series really start to stand still and show it's age in look. From a exterior view it's elegant but nothin that screams inovation or that little spice. I love elegant mid tower cases. I love the define series but how long can they keep this up. So many things on this case are still taken from designs dating back to pre 2012. That is more then 5 almost 6 years. And seeing how good fractal design is in building and designing cases. I would love for them to take a risk. Let them build a elite case in high price bracket with some risk here and there.I would love that and i am sure that i am not the only one! looking at the h500p from coolermaster. It could have been awesome with better materials, higher price bracket and some more elegant adult looks. And i am sure that fractal design are 1 of the companies that can pull this off if they want to!
Forgot to mention that the side panels are interchangeable.
Never before have I wanted to 'upgrade' my case so much. And I JUST got a define c tg :S
I was hoping for it since a long time, why do I only get to know about it now? To late for a Christmas wish..
Can you compare CPU/GPU temperatures between this and the Fractal Meshify C?
Great video, what is the best fan setup for a quiet and dust "free" experience?
that plants gonna get dirt into the case through the mesh top
Incremental? iirc this version has more new features over R5 than R5 had over R4! With that ingenuine desciosion to do the glass panel holding brackets it's the best of the best. Sadly I realized that R5 is to big for my humble rig and wish I'd bought Define S instead of R5.
Wonderful case, totally digging mine in blackout. Weighs a fcking tonne though!
Noise test and comparison with BeQuiet DarkBase 700?
Worth replacing the define s with the R6? I like the hidden psu and vertical gpu but is that reason enough.
I was not expecting these DLC extras from Fractal, pretty much becoming like EA huh? Good Luck with that...
Can 3 120mm fans be used in front and still use the 5 1/4 inch drive?
I still disagree on your vertical GPU video. I feel you should have tried more options, such as ones that don't hold the card so close to the glass window.
Can you make a comparision with the R5? and the Define C ?
how quiet is it???
Did someone say OUT OF THE BOX thermals?
well looks like I found my next case
is this case out yet? or am I missing something...?
I just bought Define R5 2 Months ago!!! And this one don't have an issue with E-ATX motherboards like R5!!
Then, What will I do?
USB Type-C should be standard for all cases in 2018, I'm going to be annoyed if it isn't.
Vibration from 3.5" mechanical drives will be an issue with this case looking at that design.
I think Dmitry could make a living solely with intros...
Don't forget to mention Fred!
no tech-tuber does video work like him. truly the goat
and Eber with his voice lol
The snow was going up woah!!
I was literally just on Fractal's site trying to decide whether to get an R5 or wait until the R6 came out, I clicked back to the main page, and there it was.
@@445Matty If I had just clicked the back button it would have taken me to the cases product line page. I clicked the company logo to go back to the main page.
For me, this is THE case at the top of my short list for a new case. This has everything that I could have hoped for in a case! I'd even pop for the replacement IO for the Type-C port.
Atm im just thinking between the S340 Elite and the Define R6 - what are your other candidates ?
The other one I had seriously considered was the Aerocool P7-C1, as it has a lot of great features as well, but this one just really topped them all IMO.
XaNNy0 This one is prolly better, but it depends on what u want and what build you're doing.
I bought my r5 like 4 months ago. And I am finding myself seriously considering upgrading to this one. Everything and anything that I wished the r5 had or did differently has been addressed with the r6.
David I bought an R5 a year ago, and loved it. I have my current build in an S340 Elite, and will be changing it over to this case!
Wait 5.25" bay? What???!?? You have my attention, Fractal. God bless you.
If only they had a 5.25 to dual slim-ODD adapter, like I have on my Corsair 250D. Too bad Win10 doesn't support dual ripping of CDs in WMP any more.
2 optical drives? Yes, I really am a throwback
*who needs a pc case anyway when you have a bucket*
Rayan lame, I use a ply wood wall
TheActualMatch :)
Oyster a plywood wall is also good but you can't watercool your pc with it easily but It's easy to watercool your pc with a bucket,
just put it under a tap and open the tap.
Just use a motherboard box
Rayan cardboard box
Honestly the define R series are top shelf cases. been using both the R4 and R5 in my own builds. And seeing this im tempted to tear out everything in my R5 and get the R6. that thing sexy as hell.
I just did that. :)
Leave it to fractal to wipe the floor with pretty much every single case manufacturer
Fractal and Phanteks, everything you need.
Not impressed with Phanteks restricted air flow designs. They look plenty sleek (I prefer Phanteks' design aesthetic), but the function just isn't as good as Fractal Design's.
Csn't really disagree on that. It's the only flaw keeping them grat instead of phenomenal.
I agree, but i think Caselabs is pretty great as well.
Well, looks like _someone_ was a bit on the drink two weeks ago. Not even going to edit that last comment of mine...
I saw R6 and came right over
I think Define cases are just something really safe and refined. If you are looking for ATX to E-ATX system, it will pretty much accommodate anything you want to do with it. It might not be the best or most unique looking, but it's always really good looking. And it's case that is pretty much 100% future proof to match any future builds.
If you are looking for mid to full tower case and can't decide, Define is always the place to go. Now that they have meshified version of this case, you also have high airflow version that's equally pretty. I just hope that they lengthen their compact ATX cases a bit so it can accommodate longer GPUs, especially now that new generation has come from nvidia.
Yes. An optical drive bay. I use mine.
I've been building computers for more than a decade now and was never really happy with the available cases. The Define R6 is the first case where i don't want to get my proxxon (a better built dremel) and start to cut it. This case absolutely got everything i ever wanted in a computercase (and some things i didn't know i wanted). Great review for a great case.
Define cases are always great :)
+EposVox agreed 💪
I wish that they removed the USB 2 and put USB 3.1 type C instead.
foohyfooh from the video it seems you can upgrade for $30.
USB 2 is standard and (probably) very cheap
The most probable answer for this solution is that they probably were too far into manufacturing to change the design, so they had to settle for a separate part for replacement. This case was probably mostly ready half-a-year ago, but bringing a product to the market takes a lot of work and time.
Yes, USB 2.0 is really getting legacy... Most new motherboards do already have two USB3_FP headers, so 4 usb 3 ports would have been nice
I would keep the USB 2 because I don't have anything that uses USB c but a lot of things that uses USB 2
another masterpiece by Fractal! can't wait to build my next system in it!
Wait a second... a 5.25" drive bay at the top front location??? ::-O It's as if Fractal is targeting me specifically... I do like how they did up the front bays. It's a too bad it interferes with long radiators. It sure is a nice case though - perhaps this is case of the year?? :-)
The Define series is like the Porsche 911 or Jeep Wrangler of the case industry. Incremental, steady improvements.
I feel it’s more a BMW, their design overall never changed too much through the years and was never too out there, though was just perfected to what it is
Idk why but I throw up every time someone goes and compares everything to cars.
Need an R6 Meshify!
This + Meshify C front panel = perfect
Hell yeah, also if the Meshify has option for no tempered glass side panel and just a sound dampening one then a superb balance of silence and thermals, with decent aesthetics.
This appears to have solid airflow, so a mesh front like the Meshify C is not needed from an airflow point of view. For aesthetics, the mesh is cool. However, this case looks amazing as is. No change needed.
Hell to the fuck yes!
1ctrlaltdelete1 yeah I saw, plus replacing the front fans with A14's would close the gap considerably
If it had been available in the middle of the year, I clearly would have taken it instead of the Define S.
that's kinda how I feel about my define C. I mean, I don't really feel like I'm missing out on MUCH, but the ease of removal/looks of the side panel, the extra space for upgrades, and all the little upgrades/features just make this case pretty lust inducing for me.
It is much more expensive than Define S. I got the S for $60. I wouldn't pay over $100 for a case.
I didn't take the Define S because it's so inexpensive, but because of it's open space and the 140mm-fans. The Define C was to small for my taste and the R5 crammed with things I don't need. So the Define S was the logical compromise at that moment in July. I'm willing to pay more than 100 bucks for a case, if it is really worth it. And Fractal Design cases are worth every cent of their price imho.
same i got the define c tg and i was debating cause i also needed a little extra space for more drives in the future, the c only has 2 hdd spots. ahwell.
This case looks waaaaay better than define s. I feel like having a pc with no optical drive capability is the equivalent to having a car with no doors lol
Omg! Hands down best case of the year. The options they give you are amazing! They save the best for last
Case of the year!!
Best cinematography
Fractal has done it again! .. amazing case as always from Fractal..I like that even the small details are perfect ..excellent quality as always ..this is the best case for 2017-18 ..Absolutely my next case
*inb5 this is the COTY*
I swear, this case is like the hero (of cases) we deserve after a year of cases plastered with TG and RGB with really shitty airflow and really shitty design choices.
absolutely awesome case,
RGB is not bad if you are using it as a tool for customization, but we know the truth, all the shit we see are disco balls
have you ever have a computer so loud that once you have your headphones on or using speakers it disturbs you?, the problem there is definitely not the case
for that, you get another case, this one doesn't
Kawaii Besu meshify c tho
Yar, RGB is some cheesemo crap, anyway. I dont spend hours looking at my case. I look at my monitor.
i want Define *Nano C* for itx system, comon Fractal
NEED!
Albert Gooner make it happen dana
I know! A Nano C would be almost the perfect case.
Also please replace the snap-off front cover with a real door for easier access to the front dust filter.
@1ctrlaltdelete1 There is already a _Define_ _Mini_ _C_ for mATX.
I think it could be upgrade with tool-less glass panel though.
i think my define r5 is staring at me while i watch this
But but wheres the meshify mini c?
Fractal always delivers. 0% BS and 100% quality. Love my define C.
Holy crap! A manufacturer listened to you!
With 200-500k views on Case review videos, Dmitry is like the best advertisement platform there could be for such an industry.
This is literally the PERFECT Case
I am in love
Bad airflow
@@allieboy181 so why do people just type 2 or 1 one and might as well say its garbage. Give us a reason why, how, what if, setup, theory, or get off the internet single word opinions are an epidemic like Trump. It is literally a perfect case for 96.875% people if the $ didn't run the world.
There might be a Meshify R6. I said it first!
I'm so happy that it has room for one optical drive.
Dammit, why did they have to release this right after I made my new build?
It's as if the Fractal Design guys build systems and read reviews. Kudos!
Dmitry, to solve that top radiator issue, could you have removed that right side shroud and just left it off? Or is it needed to help support the drive caddies?
Is there something about USB type-c that makes the connector expensive? I doubt it as it is on cheap devices, and other cases that don't all cost more than this one. Making you buy it as an extra, and go through the hassle of replacing all the internal wiring, and throw away the old panel (what a waste of money, and materials/manufacturing), seems completely ridiculous, specially from a company that gets as much right as Fractal. Why not just include the damn thing as standard? It's one connector.
The header is on most of the Z370 motherboards, and a bunch of year old mobos as well. It's time for cases to put it on the front panel and let the thing start being used.
Leo Davidson license fee most probably.
You are replacing the whole front panel I/O, And all that wiring is expensive
They were probably too late in the manufacturing to just change the design on the fly, so they had to settle for a replacement part for those, that truly want it. It takes a lot of time, y'all.
qwormuli Type C ports have been around for a while. To have it however they would have to pay a license fee. It in the grand scheme of things the fee is not huge, but in that price range it would be enough to cut into their margins. So, if you want it you (most users probably don't care) have to pay extra.
It seems like Fractal Design R series is becoming a Thinkpad of pc cases. Same utilitarian industrial look and well thought engineering without compromising any feature.
The compromised airflow
Another tasteful elegant computer chassis by Fractal. The finer points of the tower are superbly executed. The Meshify C was my choice for case of the year, but this case has me strongly reconsidering. A last second entry that meets everything a pc builder could want. Yikes!! Great work on the video HWC.
I like how you are the only reviewer that didn't miss some key features to the case. This is why I watch yours first and well you're the king of case reviews.
I saw you touch the glass in the intro there. :-P Even did a quick glance to see if it smudged.
Damn it. Just bought the Define R5...
I just bought my third R5... I will console myself that it was a good Black Friday offer.... hmmm
:( feels bad man
Jan Mortensen Why would you buy 3?
In my case, not at once... over time they have accumulated ;-)
Jan Mortensen I see
Damitri, you are the reason a chose and love the Define series cases. After a number of years away from building PC's, I decided to build my 2013 system in the Define R4 because of your excellent reviews. That said, I updated the R4 to and R5 and built a second system in another R5. That case had many improvements I thought were important when I had the R4. The only real complaint, the door seems cheap compared to the magnetic R4, and it squeaks when opening. Other than that, I noticed what I thought was a significant improvement in airflow on the R5. As for the R6, I typically do not water cool, and I do use at least one to two 3-1/2" storage drives, so a shroud cover extension would be a nice option if no deck fan were in place. BTW, I do use a fan on the deck. As for this case, I think its one of, if not the best mid-tower case on the market. Especially if you like silence as I do. Thanks for your excellent reviews.
P.S. One more feedback note, why do they always have the door swing left by default? If you have glass to show off the interior, most users I would think prefer right swing. Just saying.
Fractal nailed it! I guess my Meshify is done.
ahaha i just got my Meshify a few weeks ago xD and now i want this
Wali Poops Alot got my meshify the other day, typical.
This would be my next gaming PC case
That brushed aluminium looks like it’s straight out of 2009.
Hami101 I know right it's amazing!
Who says that's a bad thing though
It's hard to clean.
Kaffarov I have never had an issue with it. Looks much classier than cheap plastic or mesh and not bad to clean.
Oof, tempted to get this and replace my R4.
Nothing wrong with it, but goly that's sexy.
Fractal Design makes the best PC cases.
The quality of these videos... such a pleasure to watch!
How much and when will it be released? It is a must have.
It is a hundred forty something dollars
Already out, and 149 dollars.
nice, another Fractal Design refinement. they've even gone and refined alot of design feature Phanteks first implemented in the Primo/Luxe/Pro. wish Phanteks would update instead of watch the whole market rip off their features and do them better every year.
the prettiest case review, thank you.
Because real computers have at least a 5.25" drive bay
