Interesting stories my unicorn bottle is ETL won a PA lottery and saving for a special occasion…giving to my son for his 40th birthday. Buy luck I was talking to a store clerk in FWGS store asking if anything new came in he said whatever came sold fast but heard another nearby store got shipment of Blantons. So I thought WTH it’s nearby let’s go see. Sure enough behind the counter a clerk was guarding like a pit bull. I got 2 bottles. Sometimes even a blind squirrel will find a nut! Cheers
My first unicorn I sat at the liquor store from 4 am to 9 am to miss a Eh Taylor bp by 1 person. I tipped off another store to my uncle and his best friend and they each got one. My uncle gave me his. The second unicorn I got was a King of Kentucky for $300 through Ohio’s liquor lottery. Just picked up 4 Elmer’s in an Ohio store drop a few weeks ago. $210 I believe for all 4 bottles.
As much as most people like to complain about FWGS and the uncertainty around releases, for someone who only seriously got into bourbon the past couple years.. I've scored a few good bottles from the online whiskey releases including Weller 12 and Elmer T. Lee earlier this year. I don't often get to wait for store openings but happened to find a Penelope Rio on the shelf (well counter). Not sure if more serious bourbon hunters would consider those unicorns though. I think I'd rather deal with missing on a lot of drops than have to deal with paying secondary or near secondary or even have to schmooze some manager to get a chance.
@@Dream_Weaver33 this is my thoughts exactly...Lucky at MSRP over Kiss ass and secondary prices all day! Welcome to the whiskey world, welcome to PA and welcome to Bourbon of the Week!
Found Blanton's in grocery store in July $59.98 + tax. Don't know how many that had, but it took over a week to sell out.. Then won a raffle to buy Stagg 23B $69.99 + tax.
Oh, while not a "unicorn", thought this find was interesting & shows how important it can be to know how what the bottle codes on the glass are; While hunting in 1 store very recently, saw all their WT 101 750mL were the old label (2021 & earlier) $22.50. Wanted an old label bottle for collection & knew that the older stuff was likely different & better. There were 5 bottles, so checked all the codes to find the oldest. Four are 1/2021 & one was 10/2017, so bought that bottle. Blinded it on 3 different days against 2021 & newer WT & was amazed how much clearly better the 2017 is all around; nose, palate & finish not even close! The 2017 won all 3Xs & right from the nose, knew there was something different in that glass. It had no nuttieness that sometimes comes out on the newer stuff. Went back to that store & got another old label bottle from 2021, hoping it was like the 2017, but it was not. That juice is the same as today. So, WT started putting in lower quality juice before they changed the label. It's basically shrink-flation for whiskey. They had a choice of doubling the price or put in half the quality & charge close to the same price.
@BourbonOfTheWeek the line wait depends on what I want to get. They open at 10 am. If it's a special release I'll get there around 5am if it's normal stuff I'll get there around 930. Everything is msrp.

I actually like Alabama's way of doing drops. We get a drop every month. You are able to get 2 bottles but they must be different.
