Greek Three Layer Moussaka Recipe

  • Moussaka is a layered casserole made with layers of eggplant, meat, and a béchamel sauce. In this video, Eva shows us her slightly healthier take on this classic Greek dish. Rather than frying the eggplant, Eva broils the sliced eggplant in the oven for 10 minutes on each side. Her recipe also calls for sliced potatoes to serve as the base of the dish along with the eggplant.

'Life is not perfect all the time, sometimes I does get a little bit lumpy. But while it is still hot, you strain it'.
Metaphorical life lesson right there, and this moussaka recipe is pretty good too

I tried Moussaka at the Blue Sea Resort in Faliraki, Greece.
It's really delicious, especially with ingredients native to Greece or other parts of Eurasia.

Thank you for the tips. In America it's difficult to find imported Greek products, unless you live in an area with a large Greek community. The cheeses you mentioned, however, can now be bought through the internet so that's a nice option.

I really love your recipe! I tried it and it tastes amazing! I am Bulgarian and we make Moussaka too but we do not use cheese or eggplants. The difrence is that the patatos are cut in cubes, the meet is more and mixed with onions, garlic and tomato pasta( chopped into small peaces). We mix it all together at the end we put a mix on top from Yogurt, eggs some flour ,some herbs. Its mutch faster to cook and easier. And the taste, being diffrent ofcourse, is amazing.

This recipe looks delicious. Very basic. I like that. I'm going to try it, with a couple of tweaks to make it my own. Don't worry about those who complain you are not using real Greek cheeses. Try finding (or paying for them) here in America.

My mother fries the potatos and eggplants before putting the meat, instead of putting them in oven first. For the cream, She puts 2 cups of milk with 6 tablespoons of flour and usually omits the butter.

    Tips:
    1. Do not use mozzarella or parmezan cheese in moussaka...it's like using cheedar in spaghetti carbonara. It isn't right. There 're many hard salty greek cheeses that go way better with moussaka. In Greece we use kefalotiri or kefalograviera.
    2. Add zucchini too..it gives a better taste. Also try to fry the vegetable with extra virgin olive oil...not deep fry just to soften them.
    3. Add the eggs in the bechamel cream while it is warm and add cheese as well.
Do these will make a difference...

Eggplant is indeed their English name, as any dictionary will inform you. They are also known by their French name 'aubergine' in English as well as 'brinjals'. Interestingly, the Greeks have no native word for eggplant and call them by a corruption of their Italian name 'meledzane'.

  • @KatyScotland

Hi there, I love your accent and your clear instructions.
However this is meant to be authentic but you used ground BEEF?? When in Greece and in Greek restaurants it's always ground lamb Ive had. ? Ive never heard of beef being used before.
