The Strange World of Breatharianism

- In 2013, a RUclipsr named Naveena Shine documented her attempt to become a breatharian-a person who claims to nourish themselves on air and light, rather than food. Breatharianism has been operating in the far fringes of new age esoterica for decades, with its history of fraudulent gurus, public humiliation, and tragedy.

Atrocity Guide you have a wonderful channel. Keep up the good work and have a nice day
One of the few channels I drop everything to just watch when a new video comes out. And return to again and again to listen to when I'm drawing.
Thank you for all the work to create this wonderful videos.
I'm glad you're back love your channel ,it's been awhile 😌
Really amazing video once again. I really enjoy your content. It really helps in those sleepless nights where I crave long and sometimes more darker toned videos. Thank you for all your effort! I have one question though if I may? In your Intro at 1:54 there is a screenshot of a channel from scooby1961. A Fitness RUclipsr. How does he relate to your theme of the channel? Just wondered if there is something i missed about him. :(
Funny we have so many organs devoted to something so apparently unimportant.
This is a brilliant comment, I wish it were pinned to be the top comment. It reminds me of something Spock from Star Trek would say. Pure logic.
I think if we're supposed to mainly absorb sunlight, we'd have organs resembling solar panels
I said this the whole ass video
we would be green, like plants! 😂
actually, we would have cells with chloroplasts in them, because that is the organelle that contains chlorophyll, the pigment which performs photosynthesis. we would also be green.
'food causes aging'
He isn't wrong, without food you get to die young instead. What a visionary.
That was actually the one thing he said that was correct lol. Not only as you have stated, but calories do actually cause ageing. The problem is you die without them. So pick your poison.
caloric restriction and intermittent fasting do slow aging, look up research by Jason fung or David sinclair. the reason so many fell for this breatharianism hoax is likely that there IS an element of truth to it: it works to a point, enough to convince superstitious people that there might be no limit to it if they're just dedicated enough.
Ironically I read it's actually breathing that causes aging, and not in a "haha get it you'll die if you don't breath" way.
Common sense makes you old too, what a pity.
😂
I havent eaten for 45 years. I have a deep breath for breakfast, a middle size breath for lunch, and an ever so small inhalation for dinner. I now weigh 3Lbs 2 Oz and get carried around in a bucket.

I did a full termite building inspection on "Jasmuheen's" house/centre years ago. I didn't know who she was while I was doing the inspection, but researched her straight after, as I could see that she was some kind of "guru" and overheard a meeting with her accountant and her partner/assistant. They were talking about investment schemes and the the whole time they were eating lunch. Lunch that looked more like sandwiches than thin air.
Of course they were discussing how to get rich without doing actual work, off the backs of others! Speaks volumes.

A weird hidden positive in all this is that we live in a time where food is so common and readily available that people have actually forgot what starvation looks and feels like on a personal level. You probably wouldn't fall for this idea if you actually lived alongside hunger as a regular feature of life
It's more damning that we live in a world where people are so privileged that, even with our modern understanding and access to knowledge, we forget that there is a significant portion of the global population that does not experience the same quality of life.
Are you insane? Your privilege is disgusting. There are millions of food-insecure families in developed countries, not to mention this is also the case for the majority of people in developing countries.
There’s an older SNL skit parodying Who Wants to be a Millionaire, featuring contestants from less fortunate countries. The contestant was doing well and won a bowl of soup. Double or nothing, the question was to match the definition to the mental disorder. I’m pretty sure it was anorexia. She was completely confused that it was a real issue and chose the wrong answer. No soup for her!
Thought about that a lot while watching this. Whether positive or damning, may I simply go 🙄🙄. Bless these folks’ little hearts.
I first heard of breatharianism in the early 1970s. I was newly divorced at rhe age of 22. I was working temporarily in a factory, lifting and oacing all day long. I decided to try breatharianism. Ar lunch hour, I sat outside and took in light from the sun. People began offering me foid, and i said tgat i was not hungry. In fact, when you go through a long time of not eating, you actually do stop feeling the hunger. I kept doing this until i weighed 85 pounds. I wanted to travel, but my doctor said he would not sign the health rekease until i started eating and gained weight. I started out by eating one dry piece of tisst oer day. Then after about a week i added an apple each day. My mother notuved and began fixing lunches for me - raw vegetables, fruits, and oeanut butter on celery. Gradually i gained enough weight to please the doctor. Years later, I read about anorexua and realuzed that i had exierienced that. I still have anorexuc episodes now and then. But i am seriously overweight now!!! Please do not make fun of overweight people ir tell them to stop eating!!! That can be enough to bring in anorexia, resulting in serious metabolic disirders that can result in heart disease. Be kind. Allow people the space and the grace to heal. Thank you.
Well said! I hope you get better
Thanks for sharing. Everyone has hidden struggles and we could all use a little more grace. Hope you continue to strive to be happy and healthy. You deserve it 😊
Thank you for sharing your story and completely agree with the point you made in the end! Much love ❤

When breatharians starve themselves they’re “mystical” and “inspiring” but when I do it I “have an eating disorder” and “need therapy”
That raises an interesting point. How much overlap is there between the breatharian community and the eating disorder community? It seems like they are coming from very different places, but I could definitely see some people in the one finding solace in the other as some kind of validation or excuse...
@@TheZahirNT2 there’s a lot of overlap a lot of people with EDs cover their EDs with specialized diets excuse it for sports or career, spiritualism even some vegans with EDs use veganism to only eat safe foods with high water content and low calories
Yea what the hell is up with that!?
I came here for this conversation
I think the main difference has to do with what originally influenced this kind of behavior, eating disorder are triggered in most cases with a sense of control over ones life or image whereas breathariasn are triggered from a sense of spiritualism or higher calling...while there is overlap they both start from very different places.

I always find it ridiculous to expect to uncover some ancient or secret knowledge that will set apart and for it to only tell you something that is obviously false. I think people enjoy the idea of being special or chosen and so things like this capture those type of people.
I think your right. And people who obsessively search for "enlightenment" are often perfectionists. They want complete control over their minds, bodies, and fate. And are willing to do anything to achieve this 'perfect' state of being. Where breatharianism becomes an effective scam is that those who struggle with perfectionism are very susceptible to eating disorders.
the only thing more alluring than someone promising an easy way to get you something you really want, is to say it works if you’re special
Years ago when I was addicted to heroin fentanyl and meth/cocaine whatever I could get my hands on i forgot to eat or drink and barely slept, by some miracle someone realized and forcw fed/drank me around day 29/30ish, even when they slowly introduced me to food and water I didnt have bowel or urine movements for like two additional weeks after. The first thing a newborn does after taking a breath, is root around looking for a nipple, if food was an acquired habit, why would a newborn do that?
The definition of a delusion is a fixed held belief that can withstand challenges- aka you can’t logic with these people. I’ve ‘challenged’ delusions in patients about all sorts that make even less sense- you never get anywhere until they are medicated
Just because its the first thing to happen doesn't mean its right
@@mohamedfawzy9945 It's not about being right, it's about the debate/idea of food being a 'habit' rather than a necessity. Which shouldn't even be a debate, really. And of course a newborn looks for a nipple to feed from, because humans are biologically created to need food, water and air to survive, to keep our cells alive and keep our hearts pumping.
@@mohamedfawzy9945 so you’re trying to say that baby drinking from a nipple may not be right, and that there’s an alternative which allows us to leave the baby alone and potentially die of starvation?

Clearly. It also discredits food.
Clearly you don't eat food. I eat that shit 3 times a day, sometimes I snack in between "meals" as we call them on the streets. I spend so much money on food, so much time cooking it up in pots and pans (that I also spent a bunch of money on) and it gives me the worst stomach problems. Maybe once a day, sometimes twice, I'll be expelling the horrid smelling waste the food has created, and I need an entire room to lock myself in with ventilation just to get through it. Sometimes I'll go out late at night and hit up some teenager through his window and give him 20 bucks for a bag of food. I literally need it to live.

These people just can not accept humans are living organisms consuming other living organisms to survive. Self-Consciouness does not make us special among animals, just more prone to existential crisis.
There is also the case of Finn Bogumil, who died in 2017 after trying to live on light. He was found dead in the jungle where he tried to meditate and fast/switch to light as food.
I actually kind of admire Naveena. She did the research, made I think a reasonable assumption that with thousands of claims, they can't ALL be lies (although I don't know that there are THOUSANDS of claims anyway), she decided to experiment herself with a way for people to verify she was being truthful, and then realized the method was dangerous and stopped doing it. Tw: mentions of eating disorders but I’ve had ARFID off and on and I’ve actually had weeks where I literally COULDNT get myself to eat anything except green tea or Powerade. I had to force feed myself and I could only get down a few bites. I know what starvation feels like and no one understands why. I don’t understand why. Any smell would make me so nauseous. Looking at food made me gag. Like a literal visceral response. I was so hungry but there was a tightness in my stomach I began to find comforting. I know that feeling of needing to lay down. I almost wonder and worry if they had this similar kind of issue at times. That their bodies would have these times of rejection that are wildly uncomfortable and this was the explanation they came up with for themself. I didn’t know how sick I was getting, but I knew I didn’t feel very good. People still don’t even know that I almost died because of it. No one could understand that I just COULDNT eat. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t eat. I went to college for psychology just to try and figure that kind of stuff out I think lol. ARFID was thought until VERY recently to be something that only children could experience. Most likely it’s been an adult struggle for generations and can be misunderstood as possibly anorexia nervosa, but at least for me it was ONLY a physical response. I had the normal insecurities but I didn’t have the intrusive thoughts associated with anorexia. I just felt sick at the sight or smell of food. It was also believed for a long time that when people are in distress they will overeat in search of comfort. This is true for some and not true for others. Some are predisposed to a loss of appetite during distress. This can be associated with high stress, depression, anxiety issues, or at any time of heightened emotion.
As someone who used to be anorexic I can't imagine wanting to literally starve yourself and it not being an eating disorder. But even at my lowest point/weight I was eating every day and I felt like absolute garbage and had the feeling I wouldn't get through the night at times.
I've been eating "normally" (to the best of my ability) for almost 3 years now and my body still hasn't gotten used to it again, if it ever will. And I was "only" sick for 2 years, so I've either messed up my digestion/stomach or something or it's going to take more time until I regain the ability to feel hunger or have an appetite.
Sounds like a very enlightening and freeing experience, right?
I am a Youtubarian, I dont eat, I feed off the light coming off the screen while playing RUclips videos.

Diabetics just have to reflect the light off sugar and absorb that.
Ok
When my BG gets low I just stare into the sun. The blinding pain makes me forget all about the low.
Don’t worry the light energy should eventually fix your pancreas right up! Don’t forget to meditate and manifest! (/s)
I always love it when the experiments are short enough that a person can survive without food, as long as they can sneak some water from time to time.
Thank you for this great video ! I am really impressed with your research, your editing and "story-telling" capabilities : the understing of the subject is very complete and lay out in a compelling manner ! I am very sad for all those people taken on by grifters, and i hope the survivors find the help they needed.....
I mean, like, I wish Breatharianism was real, because food is expensive, man.
And a hassle
And tastes nice. I wouldn't exchange the taste of bacon for the taste of air.
It really is. I struggle to make it through the month
Amen!
I know some breatharians. They are doing fine and they fast for a time and eat whatever they want for a time and go back to fasting.
Oh wow, we don't actually have to eat? I bet everybody who died of starvation feels pretty silly right now.
@lyiyt No, they died because they didn't starve the "right" way
omg this comment sent me ... laughing like crazy right now
Well said
Weren't you listening?
They died because they wanted to die.

This was definitely the weirdest thing I've heard of in a while. Very good video though! I'd love to see more of your work.
Very well done video. Really great narration.
I went four days without food once... but I was a “cocaine-arian” back then. Nothing but beer and yayo, no sleep or food. If u wanna venmo me $1500 I’ll share my secrets with ya. They call me... Mahatma Montana.

Plenty of calories in beer.
@Sergeant Gutsy Can confirmed, was an honorary Metharian due to my high ranking status in the Heroarian fellowship. The shadow people are usually very nice by the 7th day, but rather frightening by the 11th. Cool lads.
@Sergeant Gutsy I can confirm
There's something very disturbing about the growing popularity of easily-debunked lies.
Think about how old Christianity is...same shit
@@jesseminns Yes, but compared to the availability of information we have now it should be so much easier to debunk or verify information to some extent, and with such little effort. It's literally at our fingertips (Although many things obviously aren't so simple and require study to understand or life experience. Also, some things are more nuanced and are not so black and white.).
Of course, with that easy access to mountains of information to sort through, including legitimate accurate info, comes misinformation (intentional or otherwise) and if we don't teach critical thinking apparently many people cannot differentiate between the two. Then of course there are unfortunately those who are willfully stupid or are profiting from taking a position publicly (for example politicians bought by oil/ energy companies denying climate change for example when they know they are full of it and they also know their paychecks depend on them pushing a false narrative as they did after tobacco company lobbyists paid them to try to silence or at least delay the findings that smoking causes cancer and that their product is a carcinogen among many other instances throughout history unfortunately where people put greed over truth and the common good/ public welfare and health). Also every single one of us (myself included obviously) can fall prey to our own confirmation biases or putting emotions before logic and holding onto some belief stubbornly because we associate it with patriotism or tribalism and/ or see it as part of our identity or a billion other reasons that make little sense but appeal to our egos.. unless we are aware of it and work diligently to make an effort to not fall into those traps and logical fallacies which will help us avoid it but we can still once in awhile fail.
I suppose the problem is that well educated and intelligent people have made life too easy for the imbeciles. I really can't feel too much sympathy for people who are this gullible.
I used to think the Internet would bring an age of enlightment. I didn't realize lack of information was NOT the reason people were saying and doing dumb things.

Love this comment lol
Why is simply being human not mystical enough? The human condition, and all it is made of, is complex and simply amazing. Why do people feel the need to mess with that?
Ikr? They dont like Nature. Always trying to defie it.
It reminds me of a largely forgotten Christian heresy/spirituality misconception called "angelism," the pretension that humans could be like angels on Earth if they were spiritual enough. That included not eating, not n1 or n2, and a bunch of mystical side effects. Craziest heresy ever.
Theological librarian here. Saw that in an old book, but seen the idea in action in several saints bios, who then rejected it and embraced their redeemable, wonderful human nature.
Exactly, being human is enough. It doesn't matter who you are, where you are from, or how you look or what you have. We are all the same species, we are all human. I do not see the need to feel or become higher than we already are by going on 'breathanarian diets' and following some nutjob cult's orders. Many do not realize the amount of mystery, amazement and miracles that lie inside us. Our cells, the way our brain works, hell we just recently discovered a new organ. We've managed to manipulate our surroundings and managed to LEAVE THIS PLANET onto OUR DAMN MOON. And if you wonder why that is such an achievement (for some reason), IS 384,400 km apart. A blue whale is 25 m long (On average females)
Most people dont care to learn how things work really.. even if it's the machine they live in everyday of their life.
because they are board with a life without serious struggle, so they invent a way to make life more interesting. this doesnt explain religion, it explains cults. also mental disability, but that can be mitigated if the country actually cared enough to try.

I sure can.
How naive are you to think that if thousands of people believe in something than that thing is true.

There will always be outliers, even among absolutes. If there's anything I've learned these past few years, its that you can gaslight anyone at anytime for anything.
Same here.
I have a basic understanding of biology
So what's actually happening is very simple. There is a small number of grifters, these people are at the top, they make a majority of the content. Under them is an equally small group of followers, these people tend to be mentally ill or lack critical thinking. They assume any failures they have with the process are their own fault.
What happens tho is the grifters end up grifting for so long that they delude themselves into thinking they're doing it for real and any inconsistencies in how they live isn't strange.
As we see with the lady near the start, she does this for so long that she deludes herself into thinking she eats food because she "desires the taste/experience" rather than the fact she's starving.
so impressed by your work
I found this piece fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
I am quite surprised Naveena Shine found such little financial support during her experiment. Maybe she just lacked access to the proper people and technology to get things setup. I would think live streaming an experiment like that would have had no problem finding tons of supporters/watchers. With the rise of new streaming platforms like Twitch, seems something like that could have been a huge hit, even back then.
It seems she's gone radio silent now for almost a decade. I hope she is happy and well. Out of all the other so-called practioners of this strange practice, she was the only one that seemed genuine and real about giving it a go and willing to be honest about the results.
I honestly have to respect the audacity of the guy who just went straight from "I have spiritual insights that allow you to live without food" to "OK, but what if eating McDonalds is actually the most spiritually pure thing possible?" after he got caught out.
It sounds straight out of South Park
HAHAHHAH

He died six years ago apparently....
That is hilarious and a great insult to the whole movement.😀
this just seems like an eating disorder for the spiritually inclined
There needs to be a class for this honestly
It is, its how my mother has been justifying her anorexia. Shes beed diagnosed but hey the crazy will find a way to keep it going.
nuns who didnt eat and died months later justified their eating disorder through spiritualism ..
and at the times they were praised for it , and they still died :(
@Alianova Preobrazhensky Really how so?
Fasting?
What a surprise that this revived with social media
Good music! Love that smoky Jazz vibe and those Jazzy drums. I wanna hear more of that rhode jam. Not the fan of not eating But that is Jazz with a Capital J! 😍
“The body usually does what you ask it to do.” Yeah tell that to all the kids with cancer, the people who desperately want to get pregnant and can’t, and all the little kids in Michigan poisoned by lead in their water. Do they not “ask” “nice” enough?

Let's not forget people with mental illness. I mean, if a schizophrenic just asked their brain nice enough, the hallucinations will go away, right?
At best, these people will ignore the question. At worst, they'll look you in the eyes and say yes
this is honestly insulting to anyone who has experienced starvation, not by choice
I had an eating disorder as a teen and really messed up my stomach...later I was too broke for 3 meals a day. Neither of those experiences was a good time, morbid if anything.
Yeah this would have been some handy shit during the Holodomor or the Great Leap Forward huh?
And homeopathy is insulting to people that died of untreated disease. Anti vaxxers are insulting to people that died of the flu or measles.
This is kind of the case for anything like this.
The man that knows something knows they know nothing at all...
There’s a difference between being forced to starve and living on light. It’s the same as when some religions fast for a month at a time. Your nutrients is about connecting to god. Having an eating disorder or not being able to eat is a whole other issue. And if you actually cared about that issue wouldn’t you want to look into this potential solution instead of being insulted that you lived this long and your just now finding out you know nothing at all and writing it off😂
Why do people get so mad about what they don’t understand...
You’ll evolve to find out that our intention is the most powerful thing in the world. It can be like magic

Yeah…. My mother did the same thing. She wanted to see how long her body could survive without food. Obviously she died. 😐
as someone who’s recovering from anorexia, how these people have failed to realize that this is textbook disordered eating is beyond me. it’s genuinely terrifying how easy it is to convince people to harm themselves under the guise of healthier living.

@Sarah Hulsey for not wanting to torture animals for no reason? Here’s some news - we don’t need to eat animals or their byproducts to survive, and eating them causes pandemics and is the biggest contributor to climate change.
A vegan lifestyle aims to prevent unnecessary suffering of animals as practically as possible while also fixing problems that will plague the human race indefinitely. What’s YOUR lifestyle do to improve the world around us?
