  • Adams Morgan used to be the Barrio Latino 54 years ago when I arrived in DC. Over the years it has gentrified . The Latinx, as they are now called, were pushed out. 46 years ago some one had the idea to hold a neighbourhood festival. The first festival I went to around 40 years ago was a big music filled event spanning not only 18th St. NW but also Columbia Rd, NW and the streets within that triangle. There were Cuban restaurants and latino grocery stores. There were at least two bandstands in the street, people dancing.
This year the festival was confined to just part of 18th St.. The music was in the soccer field of Marie Reed Middle School, tucked in a recess well away from the street. My friend Marc urged me to attend for the music. I am glad I took his advice. There were professional dancers from the Malcom X Drummers and Dancers but they had encouraged their students to dance with them. I found the Cuban group’s dancing and music boring so I am not including their performance. The headliners for the day were the Blackbyrds, a well loved DC group. As you can see they brought out the dancers.
