I am so glad you reviewed this device. I've been falling in love with mobile gaming and my rog ally x has opened my eyes to what I've been missing. The form factor is everything. Now I am intrigued lol.
Had mine for just a week and I'm loving it so far. I do have several other handhelds plus a steam deck as well. As of the moment this is the perfect price to performance to size ratio for me and I can easily see myself playing this the most out of all my other handhelds.
@ Unfortunately I don't really know. So far I've spent more time tinkering than playing on the thing. Longest session I've probably had was 30 mins and it was fine. I think it depends largely on your hands. For me my fingers curl around the grips perfectly. For my needs it's comfortable enough but I don't see myself ever playing on something like this for more than an hour anyway. Who has the time?!
Subbed. Good review and talking points! I personally wanted one too just for the screen but what held me back was the all glass front and the grips on the back. Ive seen it be a fingerprint magnet and shatter easily. Its also not as pocketable as the 4 pro which i own. So waiting to see what they do with the Retroid 6. Ill likely upgrade then.
My bet is the 6 is an iterative upgrade like the 3 to 4 was. There’s very little left for them to do before they’re encroaching on AYN Odin 2 territory
In regards to SoC for the RP 6 this is what I'd love to see; Snapdragon 7 gen 3 for a base model, and 7+ gen 2 for a pro model (don't confuse it with the 7s gen 2 which is a cheap midrange chip made at the Samsung factory). Priced lower than SD8 range, both significantly outperform 865 and have better power efficiency. The 8 gen 1 I will never recommend to anybody for any reason. It gets hot quick and throttles out a significant amount of its performance while eating the battery. 20mins of 3dmark stress testing ate 14% of my battery in an S22 and throttled down to about half of it's capability. The same test on a Motorola with 7 gen 3 ate 9% (same size battery 4500mah) and it didn't throttle at all, so for the last 5 minutes of the test the 7 gen 3 was running at 10fps higher than the 8 gen 1. Obviously this changes when it comes to actively cooled devices, but I still think these two SoC's are worth considering.
Though I would never recommend a Samsung made chip. They all have performance issues related to thermal throttling. I didn't know about 7 gen 1 or 2 but if they're Samsung made, I wouldn't want that, definitely.
@salihunver47 nether would I, that's why the 2 SoC's I mentioned are TSMC builds. I honestly would take a TSMC MediaTek chip over the Samsung Snapdragons, even if that means missing out on custom driver support for uzuy/ihcadus.
Honestly I'm impressed this time round... I developed an aversion to retroid after the rocky 3 and 4 releases but they've done pretty well with the 5. I have spent the last 3 years with an SD865 smartphone and I haven't found a game I can't get running well. Even outrun 2006 (PS2) which people claim doesn't do so well even on the 8gen2 based Odin 2, I had it running very well on an 865. There is no one-setting-fits-all when it comes to emulation so you can't expect every game to launch and be perfect straight away, play with EE cycle rate/skip, play with hardware download mode, play with speed control and refresh rate (NetherSX2).
if you're a d-pad centric gamer and don't mind the smaller screen, I can definitely see people loving this device. but for my old man eyes, the 7-in OLED on the Ayn Odin 2 portal it's just too good. for $100 more it's not a bad deal, and you get a lot more performance
The only issue in my mind is I hate the asymmetrical layout. I love the PS controller and I like to use it that way. Especially in retro games (with d-pad and the ABXY buttons) and FPS games with two analogue sticks (That's why I don't like Xbox controller cuz it feels weird when I play FPS or even TPS games).
I was on the fence between the mini and rp5. I ended up getting the rp5 since it's just $20 more. 100% agree that rp5 is the way to go. I think the minis price should be lower because it is also great but the rp5 is better value for money

While anbernic has a lot of offerings, their support/ software/ focus is seriously lacking compared to retroid. Bang for your buck I’d buy retroid over any anbernic handheld any day

Great review man. I don’t think ordering them is such an issue anymore. I think they have plenty in stock now. I just ordered one 2 days ago and it was shipped out the same day I placed the order. Directly from their website. Says it’ll be here this coming Wednesday. I chose Dhl. If they can keep the same form factor with a more modern processor for the 6 like you said. That would be amazing. So long as the price doesn’t increase too much. For me, I wouldn’t pay more than 300$ for a handheld emulator. Like say the 500$ Odin 2, why? At that point you might as well buy an aly rog. Which is wayyyy more powerful. I own the aly rog and it’s incredible. These emulator handhelds only make sense for me at 300$ or under.
Rog Ally is heavier, it might be one reason to choose Odin 2 Portal over Ally. Plus it's more expensive even though they seem like they're in the closer price range. I'm not even talking about Ally X.
The wonderous one plays very well, I’d say near identical to the experience on native hardware. The one where plumber guy goes on an odyssey does not play at all.
Super wondrous runs great for me, albeit you'll need to watch out for the heat. Maybe set the fan one notch higher. Super Plumber: Long Journey Home seems to run playably enough depending on emulator used and settings, there's video footage here on RUclips showing it.
I really wish I could have this handheld but I can't do AMOLED. OLED is gorgeous but for some reason my dumb eyes cannot look at AMOLED. It's like an instant eye ache. Hopefully the RP6 will just go full OLED or even just plain ol' LCD because that is some serious hardware.
Oh wow I didn’t realize that some people had issues with AMOLED. Just did some quick research and it seems that OLED is better for power efficiency and higher contrast. Also less expensive, so hopefully that’s what happens for the next generation for ya my guy.

I think this is a lovely looking device, but definitely attracts loads of finger prints. I'm more partial towards the stick layout of the Odin devices and although the portal looks like a bigger version of this, my instinct is to go with the pro Odin 2 ,as it's got a big enough screen best and most compatible processor, but looks more comfortable to hold.
If they can develop a new handheld that has a modular d-pad and joystick that can be swapped. Similar to the victrix ps5 controller. It would be perfect. I'm sure it's more difficult than it sounds, but it would be the perfect handheld for me.
