- The best crab imitation for stripers! Originally seen by James Brown (go check him out!) Green crabs are a staple in striper diets, a must have for fishing the flats or beaches! If you want to buy this fly, please reach out maineflyguys@gmail.com or message me on IG @maineflyguys
Material list:
hook: Gamakatsu SL12S 1/0
mouth: olive craft fur
claws: barred olive hackle
eyes: burnt mono
thread: mono and olive
body: SF Blend - Olive
weight: Medium dumbell eyes
legs: barred Olive sili legs
You got it! Don’t forget some superglue!
The larger Claw belongs on the Right = just for acuracy.
That’s not completely accurate. About 90% of green crabs dominant claw falls on the right, so there’s about 10% of green crabs with dominant left claws. So feel free to put the dominant feather on either side for accuracy!
Why the mono thread?
That’s how the original pattern is done, thus I do it too! Mono also fuses when glued with say super glue, so can make a really durable base. I use regular thread on them as well though, olive Danville waxed is a go to for me.
Nice fly!
Thank you!
Sweet way to tie in the legs and hackle. I always struggle tying them in the OG James way
Thank you!
My Lawurance Waldron vice is the best.
Thanks for posting this!! What’s a good starting point for fishing these? Float/inter/sink leader length size??
I need some confidence with these. I never seem to get a solid eat with a crab.
450 grain sinking line, 5-8’ 25 lbs fluoro leader. Wait in between strips, change your strips up. Takes are usually subtle, just a tick, so you have to be ready!
