The Prophet (SAW) said: "The good dream is from Allah. The bad dreams and nightmares are from satan. The 'hulm' is from the whispers of your desire but bad dreams come only from satan".
Why? Because every time you sleep your soul leaves your body. In the absence of the soul, when the soul is separated from the body, the shaitan gets hold of the soul and then thats when you have nightmares. The evil dream, the dream that scares you, the dream when you wake up and you're all wet. It is from shaitan. He will normally terrify you with dunya issues like somebody who you're thinking is going to beat you up or something you will see him in the dream.
If you recite Surat Al Ikhlas, Al Falaq & An Nas, Allah will place a barrier between you and the shaitan, whenever the shaitan gets closer he gets hurt.
