    Intelligent, engaging, emotional yet professional to the highest degree, I think whatever field Bill would have chosen he would have rised to the top. Really miss those eighties 49ers, it all went by way too quick

    Joe, jerry, Roger,Clark, Bill meet at a special place and time in history. That's the beauty of it. Every moment or time in history has it's heros and remarkable moments. I think we all need to just stop comparing, judging and just embrace the beauty of that era and time. The San Francisco 49ers made many people proud of the Bay Area and i'm so grateful for all the wonderful memories. I feel that all fans should be grateful for their team and there past champions. I will miss Bill Walsh.

    @arkoe310 Joe Montana won a Super Bowl minus Roger Craig, minus a running game, 2 SB's minus Rice, and won a boat load of games in college minus the WCO. The guy was incredible.

    Anyone who dismisses Marino should take heed of the words of the great Bill Walsh commenting on Marino after his retirement “He was a great, great player. I think they depended too much on him over the years. Also, he never had a defence that could dominate.” Bill Walsh’s words.

    i'm a hardcore NY Giants fan, but this 49er team was great....they were so versatile with Wendell Tyler and Roger Craig in the backfield and had a very very good defense, showcased when they shut the Bears out 23-0 in the NFC title game the previous week....I laugh at people who make it seem like Montana and Walsh needed Rice to be successful....they won 2 Super Bowls and went 18-1 (including winning this Super Bowl) before Rice even came into the league

    The 49ers had swweet defense too. The Dolphin in the highlight they showed making the long TD, the 9ers rarely gave up coverage like that, which is something I notice watching this.

    To all you Montana slurpers: Even the Genius himself, Bill Walsh, said that Montana was a product of the system, and Marino WAS the system. This explains why Steve Young was so good with the 49ers and crap with the Bucs. Hell even Jeff Garcia made 5 pro bowls with the 9ers.
    Marino > Montana

    I think Bill Walsh was one of the best coaches in NFL history. Bill wanted Marino bad and would give up Montana for him anyday. Shula, As great as he was didn't give Marino the defense & running game he needed. With Walsh, Dan would've run out of fingers to put his SB rings on !!!

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither 9 лет назад

      Actually. Walsh talked about trading Montana to the colts for the rights for John Elway (who ended up going to the Broncos as we all know). Dan Marino was and wasn't a surprise. He fell to near the bottom of the first round. While a hot prospect, no one saw a legend in the making like he was or he would have been the #2 pick. Stil imagining Marino or Elway as a 49er... jut wow. and I am a 49ers fan and love Montana and Young.

    • @hdqb2813
      @hdqb2813 5 лет назад

      Marino had the #1 ranked defense in 83, he had the #7 ranked defense in 1984, and the team racked up 18 rushing TD’s. Had a top 10 defense three other times as well. The narrative that Marino NEVER had a defense is simply false.

  • @cavaleer
    @cavaleer 14 лет назад +1

    @BIGRED224FOREVER I never said Marino didn't have talent of OFFENSE. That's the key word. They were like the Dan Fouts Chargers more or less. They could score on just about anyone and that in itself guaranteed a lot of wins and playoff appearances, and with Marino it guaranteed a lot of records. But in the NFL, if you have a glaring weakness someone is going to exploit it. The difference really was the HC. Bill Walsh built a TEAM while Shula was twiddling his thumbs. Marino's still the best.

    For me the 81 team remains the favourite, this 84 team was awesome but was beset by key injuries in 85 and 86 but 87 onwards the niners had a great run until 94 winning 3 more SBs

      85 team being beset by injuries has nothing to do with how great the 84 team was. 85-86 the bears and giants took control as walsh correctly predicted in jan of 85 they would be the teams to look out for in the near future.. In 87 the 9ers returned to the top but chose the worst time of the year to play their worst game- in the playoffs. I actually still to this day scratch my head about that one and what could have happened had they wont it. I call it walshs worst loss, far worse than the playoff eliminations by the giants in 85-86. 1988 was similar to 81 not in terms of wins losses but by average scoring margin. Didnt really blow out many teams that year in the regular season and actually had to go on a tear at the end when they finally settled on Joe as their QB, and kept up their great play in the nfc playoffs before the squeaker against cincy in walsh's final game.

    @skeeternic Football is not an individual sport, in case you didn't notice. Montana had a number of key elements Marino never had.....1) A defense...2) A running game....3) A HC who knew how to tactically dismantle an opponent.
    Given those differences, it's quite clear how and why Montana has 4 rings and Marino has none.
    Your lesson for the day....

  • @cavaleer

    @YBRR88 You, like others, totally miss the point. Montana played under arguably the greatest HC in NFL history. Being a great coach means you shape a great TEAM. The 49ers had arguably the greatest string of teams in the history of the NFL. Joe was an important piece of that but he wasn't nearly as important as Walsh. All the skills Montana had, Marino had in spades. Put Marino in a 49ers uniform and he'd had five or six Rings, maybe even 7. That's why Seifert and Young have Rings....

  • @robrob1488
    @robrob1488 5 лет назад

    Montana was a great QB. In Super Bowl xix all 4 starting players in the SF secondary (all 4) went to the pro bowl that year however. The 49ers defense was massively superior to the Dolphins. As was their running game. I think the 49ers this year have a shout for being the best ever. 18-1 with their 1 defeat being in OT

    • @Armis71
      @Armis71 Год назад

      Once the 49ers put a Nickle Defense, took out Bunz and Reynolds (who were both slow) and left Keena Turner in, that was it for Marino. The four Defensive linemen: Dean, Board, Johnson, Tuiasosopo hurried Marino and got four sacks in the game. Marino has only been sacked four times that whole season.

  • @cavaleer
    @cavaleer 12 лет назад +1

    @drbayoms I look at it this way. If I could only have one QB knowing nothing else about my team or staff, I'd take Marino over any QB except maybe an Aaron Rogers or Peyton Manning. JM was brilliant for that system and as clutch as QB has ever or will ever be, but I'd take Marino in a blind bet. ;-) What's your take on this year's SB?

  • @cavaleer
    @cavaleer 12 лет назад

    @drbayoms Those are very good points and I generally agree. JJ and Walsh were the two greatest HCs I'd say. Couldn't be more different in style and method but they were both masters of the art. Harbaugh seems to be the next great one. If he'd been at a college with serious talent no doubt he'd have won an NC. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for him to win a Ring. HOWEVER, Marino's the greatest. Any system, any team, any defense, no running game- he still wins. JM had great teams

  • @cavaleer
    @cavaleer 13 лет назад

    @YBRR88 You think all they did was outscore everyone? Montana was great, probably the best in that system but according to your logic neither Steve Young nor Seifert should've been able to win a SB. but the did. Marino's the best QB ever. No running game. No defense. A coach way past his prime. Give me Marino in ANY offense and he'll win more games than any other QB. Joe's great in that system though, no question, and if you want to learn how to be a QB watch Joe not Marino.

    @cavaleer These are some pretty lame excuses, the talent surrounding Montana through XVI and XIX was nothing special historically and certainly not as good as what surrounded Marino, arguably the same talent as what surrounded Elway, even as far as system QB goes Bill Walsh's system sputtered with Sam Wyche and his first year Walsh's 49ers went 2-14, it wasn't until Montana started that plays were kept alive largely thanks to Joe and only then did Walsh's spread offense become legitimate
    the coach excuse is dumb too - only Elway can claim that, Marino had Don Shula as his head coach - 2 time super bowl winning head coach Don Shula who took 6 teams to the super bowl with guys like David Woodley, Brian Griese and Earl Morrall... if anything Marino should've been expected to get back to the super bowl, why did he fail in a historically weak AFC with a coach who can take any scrub to the big game? if Elway could get to the super bowl with scrubs and a scrub HC and the browns could get to the AFCC 3 times in 4 years in the late 80's - there's no excuse for Marino
