She is a new revelation for me. I remember the news buzz in 2012 about the youngest pianist to perform and record the Beethoven Sonata corpus, but I didn't investigate at the time. I think the buzz and the statistics bored me. This performance is just phenomenal. And listening now to her take on the Beethoven - the album is really refreshing. Yes, astounding technique, but what a wonderful ear and imagination. And such fire!

I’m coming back to this video again a year and a half later because I’ve been listening to her recordings this whole time and I think I understand something about her that I didn’t before.
Some pianists focus on making all of the disparate parts of a piece as clear and legible as possible, some focus on deconstructing a piece into as many disparate parts as possible, some focus on making a piece beautiful, melodic, and emotionally impactful in a legible way, some focus on exploring the dynamism of the little idiosyncrasies of a piece as much as possible.
But what HJ Lim does-and I have never heard it done anywhere else-is find the narrative center of a piece, no matter how complex, and show how the piece as a whole, by way of that narrative, is legible, complicated, melodic, and idiosyncratic all at once.
Some pieces have a clear lead melody, some are much more complicated than that (these are obviously much more the latter), but any piece that can be considered whole must have some way that it moves from beginning to end that connects it together. She finds whatever that is and focuses on showing how dynamic, emotionally intense, strange, and mystical a piece’s narrative can be. Her performances are idiosyncratic sure, but they are narratively idiosyncratic, showing the intricacy and dynamism of the piece, rather than the intricacy and dynamism of its individual elements.
Therefore she has found a way to avoid abstraction and austerity without sacrificing strangeness and spirituality, and, most importantly, found a way to bind each piece together into a narrative whole with all of its original complexity in tact. No one else can do this as far as I know and it’s truly astounding.
The C major prelude is a perfect example. So many pianists have tried to make this simple piece interesting and profound in so many different ways and so many have failed. All that she has done differently is found the melody and focused solely upon teasing out the depth and profundity of the piece in reference to that melody. And what we get is the most coherent, holistic, profound, and spiritual performance of that prelude that there is.

Ms. HJ Lim is arguably the most talented pianist of her generation, both technically and musically. It is so refreshing that she has the courage to ignore old prejudice about how to play the established repertory. The fact is that nobody has any idea about what tempi Bach would have preferred, and besides the modern piano wasn't invented yet in his lifetime. How much we need young performers like Ms. Lim to break down old conventions and find new and exciting approaches. Hopefully this will win over new generations of music lovers.

How can anything conceived and constructed in such contrapuntal detail, be performed with such inexorable flow and inner drive? HJ's annunciation of the longest, deepest lines, and all of the dramatic content in WTC I, is bold, steady, loving, and tender. The voice is strikingly original, humbly respectful, and all of the details are there. Wow and wow!
Great artists tend to be quite passionate about Mother Nature, if only because Nature tends to flow through them so powerfully. Having this video recording dropped at my (our) feet is the kind of gift and generosity that feels like a giant hug of all the Earth - we highly flawed homo sapiens included. As I listen - and Bach's statements and structures are rich, intricate, and freshly original - I both sense honor and feel honored. Thank you, Maestra, for this heavenly gift.

Listen to her Chopin Ballades, Rach concertos, Beethoven Sonatas - marvelous and deep, Scriabin. She’s very complete a musician. Marvel at her arrangement of Rachmaninov’s second concerto into one piano: she was able to transpose the orchestra on top of the already extremely difficult piano part. She is Incredible!

This rendering of the WTC is so totally different from any other interpretation of the work I've ever heard, and it's also the most exciting,...you may call it Chopinesque, I think it's 21st century Bach, and with all her exorbitant speed and phrasing, she manages to stay true to the score and the spirit of Bach, showing both her understanding of the music and her extraordinary talent. All thumbs up as far as I'm concerned.

Her interpretation is unique, the way she uses the pedal, and mixes the armonies are very strange, but the result is nice, very nice. A diferent way to present Bach, I´m an old fashion pianist, plays different the WCT but the only way to know the composer is to feel his music, ans there is no writen way to do it, so this is an open mind interpretation that I must Respect.

At first I found the rapid tempo annoying. But as I listened to it, I could hear so many counter-melodies and colors and structures being revealed. The D Minor Prelude was a wonderful example of this. I truly appreciate the creativity in these recordings. Thank you for your work.

I loved it from the get go instead and I agree: it allows the router-melodies to surface, instead of being left behind as in may "stick to classic" interpretations.

This is creative, different, full os new perspectives... it makes us think about completelly new possibilities. Considering that Bach did not write too many indications of how to play his music, I do not see why Lim's playng can be consider "write" or "wrong". I loved! By the way, all freedom and creativity in her playing reminded me of a brazilian pianist called João Carlos Martins.

Very different conception than how I would perform these Bach masterpieces; but, like most every other keyboard player, I lack the technical equipment to play them the way that Lim does even if I wanted to perform them in something even approaching her manner. To her credit, Lim is forcing me to rethink these pieces and see new possibilities. And, clearly, anyone who says she lacks musical expression is just not listening.

I love this emotional interpretation which is fully supported by amazing technique. The acoustic in the hall is perhaps a bit too wet, obscuring some of the intricacy at velocity but I suppose it enhances the emotion of the performance by preventing the listener's mind from getting overly analytical. It's a very healthy audience - no coughing - or perhaps they were quietly kicked out after her entrance and allowed back in after it was over.

While I disagree with this, I still love it. It sounds so transcendental and ethereal for some reason and by this, it keeps in what Bach had in mind, the transcendence of the material world and into a higher plane of existence, one that is so out of touch that it sounds really strange and thus, unfamiliar to our human senses. A non-mathematical transcendence to put it simply.

check at 22:50 prelude no.8 in E flat minor, BWV 853, it is indescribably delicate, virile, inspired, transcending...enough of boring bach interpretations without muse...many are so afraid to play what they feel...enough academic and intellectual playing in public...i know in private many pianists play bach this felt and free....lets liberate...lets feel... like she does here with this bach...she has muses...she is great, brave...has eternity already...maybe genius.

I’ve never heard a classical pianist embody such deeply opposite interpretive ideologies as HJ Lim. There’s more fluidity and emotion in this interpretation than any other of the Well Tempered Clavier that I’ve heard, but, almost more importantly, there’s more structural clarity and nuance too. She can casually express the most selfless and vulnerable tenderness and then just turn the piano into a f*cking volcano, or even do both at once somehow. I’ve been listening to this every day for the past week and a half and I’m still in shock.
