Oak Ridge Boys Invited to Join Grand Ole Opry

- The Oak Ridge Boys were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry on July 8, 2011. The legendary country music group made up of William Lee Golden, Joe Bonsall, Richard Sterban, and Duane Allen will be formally inducted into the Opry family on Sat., Aug. 6, 2011.
After the Oaks performed their hit "Y'All Come Back Saloon," 62-year Opry member Jimmy Dickens surprised the group by walking on stage dressed as a 4'11" William Lee Golden, including long beard and sunglasses. "All my life I've wanted to be a little bitty Oak Ridge Boy," Dickens announced to raucous laughter in the Opry House. "On August 6th, I will become the newest member of the Oak Ridge Boys, and at that time, you will become the newest members of the Grand Ole Opry!"
Joe Bonsall responded for the group, saying, "Jimmy, that's the funniest thing we've ever seen, first of all. This is a brotherhood and sisterhood unlike any other. We have been friends of the Opry for a long time. ... We will get on our bus later and let this process, and I guess we have until August 6th to let it sink in."
The group concluded its set with the classic "Elvira," now being celebrated for it's 30th anniversary. They later returned to the stage to join Larry Gatlin on "All the Gold In California."

Oh no…. I saw him in concert had front row seat. He came up to me and shook my hand several times along with the other members. He was such a nice man the whole group was and they played their number one hit songs! They ended the concert singing “Elvira.” In fact we were the last ones out because we were so close to the stage I was able to set my phone up on the stage while I was dancing and swaying back & forth to their music! They came out after the concert & talked to us the lead singer to Exile who is best know for the hit song "I Want To Kiss You All Over" is married to the lead singer of The Oak Ridge Boys so we also got their autograph! I was so close I got great pictures too! What a great loss to Classic Country Music. It seems like we are losing all the Great Ones.Awe....now this really makes me cry as it was stated about Joe Bonsall "But JESUS and his family always came first-and we will see him again on the Promised Day.” Believe me I saw him in concert up close you could "see" Jesus in him! You really could!
Watching this 1 day after Joe Bonsall went to heaven makes me so happy that they got to join!!!! They should have been asked many years before this. R.I.P. Joe Bonsall!!!! Glad you are no longer in any pain and can sing to God and praise Him for all of eternity.
Just watched this and made mr tear up, should of happened 25 years before. Congrats, love you guys.
40 years over due how can new singers be inducted after 1 or 2 years an these country legends have to have waited this long.

It's because once your a member u half to perform a certain amount of shows there. Lot of artist just don't have the time

I get goosebumps watching this-these guys have played such a large part of my life. I am so happy for them and this honor which is really long overdue. God bless them and keep them healthy so they can sing for decades more! I still can't believe I had the chance to shake their hands....

I live in Mobile Alabama & I can tell you for sure...Mobile Alabama loves the Oak Ridge Boys...especially William Lee Golden...a PROUD Brewton Alabama man.
Mobile Alabama is about 70 miles south of Brewton Alabama on I-65.
My best friend's dad grew up with William Lee Golden.
I was at the Opry sitting in section 24 the night this happened. What a wonderful night.
I have been listening to these 4 guys since 1974 which is shortly after they became this group as we know then am now. It's a shame it took 37 years to be asked to be members of the opry. Congratulations to an awsome group who are as active on stage now as they were 30 years ago!!!

I totally agree it has been a long time coming for the boys to be inducted after plying at the Grand Ol Opry for over 30 years. I have followed the boys since the late 70's and early 80's and love their music, they are th one's who inspired me to sing in school and till today!

Had front row seat in a smaller venue you could hear there voices without the electronics amazing amazing.
I can't even imagine how or why it took so long for them to receive the invite. Glad that this finally happened.
My favorite country singers
They were doing a show in our town and were staying at a local hotel for the night. I happened to bump into them at the hotel and they are the nicest, most personable and level celebrities I have ever met.
I can't believe it took them till 2011 to invite them to join...

I don't believe that any laws would've been broken had this invite been issued while my most favorite singer was a member of the act. Oh and blowing out his candle will not make any other candle shine brighter especially if they are not even lit in the first place.

This is the funniest and coolest invitation to the Grand Ole Opry ever. I do not think this one can be topped. Little Jimmy Dickens dressed like William Lee Golden. Then Joes reaction to the news was amazing. I am glad they were inducted when all 4 of these guys were together and not during William Lee Goldens Leave of absence from the Oak Ridge Boys.

It is not Carrie's fault that she became a member before Oak Ridge. Opry decides the order in which they inducted their members, not artists.

I see the Grand Old Opry follows the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's pathetic example in letting lesser known acts in before some of the most influential and long running veterans like Oak Ridge Boys. Unbelievable. They should be ashamed of themselves. These guys were doing their time long before artists like Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner and Darius Rucker (wtf??) who got inducted in so soon in their careers, it is a travesty that after 36+ years of country music (and gospel long before that) they finally became members.
Why dose it take years for legends to become a member. And now they let anyone in in no time and three freaking pop singers pisses me off

This is back when it meant something, but nowadays they just hand out invitations like candy. It's starting to get watered down like the Hall of Fame in the NBA, NFL, etc...
Took them way too long to become members. But the Opry will give it to Lainey Wilson based on one good year and having a big butt.
