I took an in-person 8 week beginning watercolor class and the teacher could *never* properly explain the difference between warm and cool colors. I finally got it now! THANK YOU! Love this channel - you are an excellent teacher and gifted artist.
That was the best video I have seen in a year! You broke it down so simply -- I now understand where the warmness/coolness comes from -- especially using pink instead of a red! Thank you so much!
Thank you! That was very helpful. I frequently get muddy colors but couldn't figure out why, then I kept hearing artists talking about warm and cool primary colors. You explained it nicely.
Great tips for colour mixing, I struggle with mixing to get the colour I want. This has helped. A video only showing what colours are best mixed for various shades of brown & grey would be great if you could. I definitely struggle with my greys! Thank you Emma. 🥰🎨
This is the most clear explanation of warm and cool colors I have ever seen. Thank you!!! Especially the visual examples. I have been hoping for your help on choosing some starter colors in the W and N professionals that you use. Your advice on the Arches paper was great too.
Your tutorial is crazy informative-as a beginner I have wasted so much paint when mixing colors BECAUSE I never thought about the undertones; and, now I understand why artists, for some projects, choose that ultramarine blue! I needed this information!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge in an easy to understand way!!
Emma all your videos are very clear to understand! That’s why I really love your videos. I have learned so much! I enjoyed painting along with you. Thank you so much!
Great lesson Emma!!! I didn't think this was important - now I see why I'm having some brown tones pop up in a flower !!! HA!!! Oh boy, I'm working with a Cotman 36 pan set... & tube set. I lucked out and found a small tube set of Sennelier student colors. WOW! I also ordered a magenta colored tube and it felt like kindergarten all over again!!! Love my greens and blues.... fav is deep bl/green also called Viridian... thank you! I will save to watch again... I need to have those charts at my desk! Blessings from a California gramma 🌺🌴🌺
This really helped with my understating of COOL vs. WARM colors. Especially helpful was the part about how to determine if a color is COOL or WARM by comparing it to the color wheel and seeing if it leans toward the cool side of the primary color or the warm side of the primary. Thanks so much, have been struggling with this concept.
I came here to test my knowledge so far with the colour theory and I am glad that it is all true after watching this video. It is like scoring a 10/10 on a surprise test. 😂😂 Thanks a ton for mentioning the real primary colours. I was too unaware of it until I saw a reel on the gram some months ago.
Ok, so I had completely forgotten about primary and secondary colors (it’s been a long time since I learned about them!), so this was an awesome reminder to take my color mixing back to the basics. Thank you!!!
Nice job. You definitely surprised me with the turquoise and pink! I would never have thought that would make that nice purple. It makes sense with the CMYK though. So, permanent rose. I noticed you use it a lot, and I have never bought that color. Now, I need it! Thank you, Emma.
This was soooo helpful!!! I never understood whyyy I couldn't mix a decent purple and now I know 🥺🥺. I mostly like poster colours but want to start with watercolours and will be using your suggestions from the description for the shades. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH 💖💖
I have read all the comments thus far and can't wait for you to answer them-especially how to identify warm and cool yellows. To me, you made the first part so clear and it really helped. But I kind of got lost on the tertiary part. I'll have to watch it over until it sinks in. Thank you so much! Stay safe! 💕
Thank you !! So helpful! As a lover of watercolour and have produced a few paintings I am happy with I always seemed to struggle with muddy colours so I’ve decided to get rid of all my cheap pans, and have stated back with basics of warm and cool primary’s (ordered Daniel smith set of six) and I am looking to teach myself how to mix from the very start - so trying to find a decent video that actually explains how to find the undertones has been hard - until I found this !! Thank you so so SO much Emma, clear an concise without any babbling ! New subscriber here 🙋🏻♀️✨
EXCELLENT! Had been searching for this info and couldn't find in anywhere. Now please, I need to know how to best organize my paint colors in a palette so I can best keep track of them for mixing.
You explained the colors really well. I knew the basic warm and cool colors but got confused by all the different reds, blues, yellows. Now I understand a lot better. Thanks! By the way....love your hair with bangs! So cute!
Best video yet!!! Thank you for breaking all this down so well. I’ve been trying to learn this concept for a long time and this actually makes perfect sense. Thank you again for your knowledge 💕
thanks very much, this really helped me.. Would you by chance know where i can get a list of all W&N colours showing cool/war,m? I use mainly W&N professional and Cotman. Ill check out your other videos🙂
Thank you for a clear and concise explination. Could you please explain how cold cool colours recede and warm colours come forward and so how to paint a sunset for example?
So maybe I missed it, but do we stick with mixing cool colors with cool colors or warm with cool? Or none of the above. Or does it all depend on the undertone of each stand alone color to mix with each other.
Wow! Of all the videos I've watched and the online classes I've taken, this was the easiest and best explanation by far! I now totally understand the cool versus warm, as well as the brightness concepts. Great tip using pink for purple! I can't wait to try that! Thank you so much!
Using opposite colours (on the wheel) neutralise or tone down the mix. Perfect opposites make black or neutral greys. This is what is all about if one is looking to create a natural looking watercolour painting. People like Alvaro Castagnet and Josef Zbucvic are masters in these mixing skills.
Wow! Truly wow! That was VERY helpful!!! I just don’t see or identify colors as easily as others seem to be able to do. When you said, “This green is a more yellowy-green, right?,” my thought was….it is?😂 I can see it is lighter, yes, but more yellowy…not really. However, when you put the color wheel next to the yellowy-green,💡it did look more yellow! To someone else, this is obvious, but for me, it is not. I appreciate the work you did prepping and making this video!!! It REALLY helped! Thank you!!
Thank you for the wonderful information, I am wondering about the one primary color you didn't talk much about yellow. What is a cool yellow and a warm yellow?
Gary Dyarman yes, sorry! So a warm yellow would lean more towards an orange (example: cadmium yellow) and a cool yellow would lean more towards green (example: lemon yellow)
Thank you so much for a list of warm and cool!!! I've went back to basic for learning color theory and was struggling... So now I am able to buy the primaries in 3 warm and 3 cool!!! I'm so excited!!!
Wow...this is totally a mind blown video. After watching the video, does CMY (cyan-magenta-yellow) color primary are superior than RYB (red-yellow-blue)? And should we use CMY as the solid model to mixing color?
Excellent lesson, in fact the best way I’ve ever been taught!👏👍. Thank you Emma, I’m definitely saving this video as I will definitely be going back to this frequently ❣️
That was a great explanation of colors. Especially for a beginners. I really really appreciate this RUclips.
Wow
I took an in-person 8 week beginning watercolor class and the teacher could *never* properly explain the difference between warm and cool colors. I finally got it now! THANK YOU! Love this channel - you are an excellent teacher and gifted artist.
You must have been reading my mind, for the past few weeks I have been wondering what the difference was. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
That pink life-hack is something I’ve never imagined before. Thank you for your tutorial, Emma ❤️
Emma, you are a great teacher. Blessings to you and stay well.
This is the best most easy to understand video on color theory I’ve come across 🙏
That was the best video I have seen in a year! You broke it down so simply -- I now understand where the warmness/coolness comes from -- especially using pink instead of a red! Thank you so much!
Who else knows all about warm and cool but just loves watching Emma’s videos and won’t miss a single one ☺️🥰😂
Thank you! That was very helpful. I frequently get muddy colors but couldn't figure out why, then I kept hearing artists talking about warm and cool primary colors. You explained it nicely.
That really was the easiest tutorial on mixing colours for beginners..Thank you.
Thank you for sharing and making it easier to understand. It's a bit overwhelming when trying to put a beginner palette together. You are the Best.
I love what you said about mixing purple…when in doubt purchase a pink! Thank you so much for this tutorial!
I have been trying so hard to understand warm and cool colors. You’re the only person that made it simple so it makes sense. THANK YOU
Amazing explanation - actually watched this for decor and understanding warm vs cool of different colours to bring into a colour pallette 😁
Great tips for colour mixing, I struggle with mixing to get the colour I want. This has helped. A video only showing what colours are best mixed for various shades of brown & grey would be great if you could. I definitely struggle with my greys! Thank you Emma. 🥰🎨
I am a beginner BEGINNER and this is so helpful and clear - thank you!
An excellent video. I watched it again before setting up my palette. Extraordinarily helpful.
This is the most clear explanation of warm and cool colors I have ever seen. Thank you!!! Especially the visual examples.

Thanks for this video ! Agree about purple being tough to achieve.
Great job explaining the difference between warm and cool tones, and how to mix good secondary colors.
🌟🌟I want to thank you so much for listing the colors that are cool and warm. I have searched for a list for that for months.❤🌟🌟
You have made the color wheel so easy to understand, thank you. 💐
This was an incredibly clear and helpful explanation of warm and cool colors, something I've struggled with as a beginner! Thank you!!
As a beginner, I cannot thank you enough for this excellent, concise video
Thank you. This was helpful to me for understanding warm and cool colors.

You are wonderfull! I just love learning with You!
Thanks for sharing your tips, this is the most clear and detailed videos I have ever seen for beginners.
I always use crimson red its like pink and makes beautiful purple
Emma, Do you try to use only warm or only cool tones in a painting. Do you mix warm an cool in paintings?
You did such a great job of explaining this in an easy to follow way! Thanks.
Great lesson Emma!!! I didn't think this was important - now I see why I'm having some brown tones pop up in a flower !!! HA!!! Oh boy, I'm working with a Cotman 36 pan set... & tube set. I lucked out and found a small tube set of Sennelier student colors. WOW!

Bonnie H. So a warm yellow would ya e more orange in it and a cool yellow would lean more towards green.
@@EmmaLefebvre thanks!
This is very helpful and you explained it well thank you, Emma. Be well! 🎨

Which red did you use to create the color wheel?
Wow! Truly wow! That was VERY helpful!!! I just don’t see or identify colors as easily as others seem to be able to do.

Emma thank you for going over the basics for us beginners! I will definitely do this. Xx
This is so useful for a beginner like me! Thank you so much!!!
this is best on color mixing
Always good to hear about color theory. Maybe one day it will sink into my brain. Probably just need to sit down and play with it.
Thank you for the wonderful information, I am wondering about the one primary color you didn't talk much about yellow. What is a cool yellow and a warm yellow?
