Greg I really like how simple this method is. Doing the dimensional math before hand rather than building as you go, for me, has always been problematic. I dont build houses though, only small sheds and storage and stuff.

I just set the rafter on the ridge and top plate, similar to you, and if I want a 1” deep plumb cut, I put a 1” thick spacer next to my rafter and trace around it. I can do the math, just a lazy engineer I guess on my own stuff
