I've been in the Pikmin trenches since I was a wee lad, I watched Dazz, Chugga, Arlo, even GhostRobo's playthrough of pikmin 3. This past decade as a Pikmin fan without Pikmin has taught me much about false hopes, rumors, and expectations. For me, hype died a slow death for everything except Pikmin 4. Now that it's finally here, I feel true joy.
@jaykelley103 the whole reason I wanted a Wii U as a kid was to play Pikmin 3. A few years ago, I got a GameCube, along with the first two games, and enjoyed them both, although I haven't finished 2.
About the sound part. I don't know how but nintendo mastered this subtle sound design of different steps, clanks, rustle and so much more....all of it makes their games feel more intimate and personal which in turn counts towards your immersion. Love it
so glad pikmin is getting more recognition!!!! been a fan since pikmin 1! I never get tired of those little pikmin noises, and oatchi makes it even better
No exaggeration, this game is a 10/10 masterpiece. Loved the series since the release of the first one and this is the magnum opus. Delivers on every front and then some.

This game finally allowed me to seek revenge on the waterwraith and the crippling childhood trauma and nightmares it imbued onto me. 10/10. Also happy the caterpillar boulders didn't instakill my entire party.
My favorite thing now looking back at the series is how different all the games are. They do their own things, have different flavors of gameplay and mechanics.
Never was big on Pikmin, but bought this one since it got so many good reviews and it really surprised me by how great it is. One of the best and most addictive games I’ve played this year.
I remember playing pikmin on wii like 11-12 years ago. I was really intimidated by the atmosphere and the time limit so I just gave up playing. This video made me pick it back up after all these years and now I'm playing it again. Thanks dunkey for reminding me a piece of my childhood.
This game was so good that it was the first time I literally could not put down a game. Every day until I beat the entire game I woke up and said "Holy shit dude I gotta play Pikmin" and played until the sun set it was insane
Dude, I just want to let you know that, despite now being someone that doesn't have time for video games but still casually plays them, that whenever you make a review on a game and you're like 'this is good', I buy it. You are my gold standard of video game reviews. Thank you for the work my guy.
My 5 year old nephew has been playing pikmin, and he's nearly made it to Serene Shores now. It's adorable to see how much he cares about his pikmin- personally bringing them back to the onion and making sure they're safe every night.
I enjoy all the different phases of Dunkey but the passionate reviews are the best. You show your genuine feelings and let all of us have a small part of your soul and that is commendable.
I beat Pikmin 3 in about 6 hours and thought the only good part was the bosses. I'm 10 hours into Pikmin 4 and haven't even left the 3rd map and every moment of this game is really good. I think all the added gameplay mix ups and more open feel and Orochi have dramatically improved the games fun factor. I'm glad they stuck with it.
@@ShuckleShellAnemiamy little brother does the same thing lol. It reminds me of Xqc skipping through elden ring and then acting like it wasn’t a memorable experience
@ShuckleShellAnemia The story mode is the reason to buy the game, the mission modes are there for people that want more. This is true for all 4 games.
@ShuckleShellAnemia No, story mode is why people get the game in the first place. Mission modes are side content optional to seeing the end of the game, they are not the main appeal to the casual player.
I love pikmin, as its arguably my favorite series, it just makes me sad that my grandmother who also loved the series passed away right before it came out, R.I.P. Grandma
Damn, similar thing happened to me. My dad, who played Pikmin with me when I was younger and he really enjoyed it, passed away the same day as Pikmin 4 was announced.
Dunkey hits the pikmin problem on the head. It has no target audience except for real fans of gaming who aren’t afraid to try something a little abstract.
When you talked about the water wraith spitting a copy of waverace blue storm, I thought it was just another dunkey skit. But no, it's actually a waverace blue storm disc, what the hell
I remember seeing the Pikmin Trailer on Luigi's Mansion when I was a kid and I was so enthralled by the sounds and looks of it. I had to get it when it came out, and I've been a huge fan ever since. Olimar getting added to brawl was huge too lol. Nice to see Dunkey loving Pikmin too : )
Same to everything you said. Seeing Pikmin starting to finally get recognized after going into 10 year long hibernation twice due to poor sales is so satisfying.
Pikmin 4 is like an overhaul of the previous 3 titles combined into 1 incredible game. I was really skeptical when I saw that the caverns were coming back, but I have to say that I really enjoyed them in 4. The best part for me, though, is that all pikmin types are available in the main story. My only complaints are the 3 hour tutorial at the beginning, and that a lot of the areas you explore kinda feel the same. I know it’s all in one persons yard, but I still would’ve liked to see some more different looking biomes instead of just sand and dirt. Already one of my favorite games of all time tho, I haven’t had this much fun with a new game since Elden Ring
The beach zone was probably the coolest area in the game. I liked the house too, but the rest of them are just similar enough to not feel that different. I haven’t 100% beat the last thicket area yet so not sure about that one. Kinda miss the dynamic rainy weather in pikmin 3 too
Pikmen 4 was absolutely AMAZING The environment, the gameplay Phenomenal I dint think the gane innovated much but definitely perfected But I do wish they made it so you could have 200 pikmen and tailor the game to that size enemies, objectives etc
I played Pikmin 3 and was somewhat left empty by its length. But this game real good. It’s amazing how good it is. Oatchi is scientifically the cutest thing in existence.
Absolutely right about the pacing, game feels super slow at the start but gets a lot better once you get to the second area. Lots of stuff to do in this game, kept surprising me with extra content I wasn't expecting to see. Gameplay is amazing and easily the best in the series. My few problems with this game are the pacing, soundtrack felt kinda forgettable except for a few tracks, and many bosses feeling easier than they actually are because of Oatchi and ice Pikmin existing
Dunkey you have got to make a video on Kenshi, it’s got to be one of the most unique and funny/brutal games I’ve played. I’ve spent 500 hours playing and still not even been through the entire map or done much of the crazy endgame stuff. Amazing lore too. It’s also hilarious and I think you’ll appreciate it for that
I played Pikmin 3 Deluxe after playing Pikmin 4 (first Pikmin game), and it made me realize how amazing the new mechanics of Pikmin 4 are. Oatchi is a HUGE game changer for overall pacing and consolidation of gameplay. The Pikmin are “smarter” in Pikmin 4 in some ways (staying by the finishing location once they’re done carrying material stacks, better pathing around hazards, quicker response times, etc.). Also, I really am appreciating the segment-type levels in the pipes more - it’s a great break from the open worlds which can really pull your attention all over the place, so it’s nice to have areas with one clear cut goal. Such a wonderful game. Both are great, but Pikmin 4 really is incredible
My mom bought me Pikmin with my Gamecube (Christmas) years ago, along with the strategy guide (because the dude managing the game section of Wal-Mart probably asked how old I was). I must have read that guide ten times from front to back before I ever even attenpted playing the game for real. I was still terrified of not making off the planet, of the consequences of my inability, and most of all, failing to deliver Olimar back to his family. I couldn't work up the nerve to even make it past the tutorial, and eventually, finally, faced my first major defeat (yeah, I don't count the occasional time-slip past dark) at the metaphorical hands of the Yellow Wollywog. I was devastated that I had failed Olimar, and his poor Pikmin. I could have, SHOULD HAVE done better. No other game had, or has ever managed to make me feel the range of emotion that game did.
the fact that dunkey said this was his most anticipated game of the year (over things like totk, starfield, etc) really goes to show how good pikmin is
thanks for this review man got a switch just to play this because of your review and i have to say this is the first single player game ive really enjoyed since red dead 2, im probly gonna buy the pikmin 1+2 bundle for the switch after i beat 4
If you have your Oatchi nearly maxed out with his abilities, you can just send him on his own to fight Empress Bulblax and throw a bone at him to revive him each time.
Spoilers for those who don’t know what he means by the post game being good: After rescuing Olimar, you are given the opportunity to play through the first 4 areas of the game again, remixed, as captain Olimar, with a 15 day time limit to get all 30 ship parts with just red blue and yellow pikmin. It is essentially pikmin 1 remix, and it is very cool and fun. Your reward for beating it is that Olimar’s ship gets fixed and you unlock the trial of the Sage leaf, which also has sick rewards if you beat it.
I will forever remember Pikmin as the series that made me fulfill my desire to send underlings to their deaths in droves that wasn't an RTS. Also I love Oatchi.
I felt so validated when Dunkey pointed out the ridiculous interruptions in the beginning of the game. It was like when I first got mario kat 8 on switch and didn't know you could turn off the auto-steer..
the music at 3:10 reminds me of an album called Structures Without Rooms, if anyone is interested in this little music bit and wanted to hear more of something similar :)
You’ve beautifully described pikmin and I agree with just about everything you’ve said. I remember hearing this was coming out after thinking the series was done, and I was jumping up and down and now we are here and the game doesn’t disappoint.
Nice to see Dunkey review Pikman 4 because im interested in it but honestly never got into Pikman but it looks a fun series to play and I wasn't expecting them to release the 4th game but it's nice to see this especially for people who are fans or want to get into it.

I remember when I "beat" the game I took a moment to tell myself "that was one of the best games I've played, but I wish there was just more to it" and then the post game shit reared its head and I strapped in for another 20 hours of gameplay lmao.
I really loved the Olimar story mode and the bonus areas are great
4:37 To hear dunkey outright say "This is a good game!" and clearly mean it tells you everything you need to know
My copy of Pikmin 3 has been passed down for 5 generations all the way by my great great grandmother. It was truly ahead of its time.
Can’t wait for hey pikmin 2
Wait have you actually played the games or just watched let's plays
@jaykelley103 the whole reason I wanted a Wii U as a kid was to play Pikmin 3. A few years ago, I got a GameCube, along with the first two games, and enjoyed them both, although I haven't finished 2.
If you're looking for another series playthrough, I HIGHLY recommend Stephenplays, his game playthroughs with his wife are top tier entertainment
About the sound part. I don't know how but nintendo mastered this subtle sound design of different steps, clanks, rustle and so much more....all of it makes their games feel more intimate and personal which in turn counts towards your immersion. Love it
This video review is somehow the best combo of nostalgia, humor, and heart. Thanks for making this! I'm happy Pikmin got another game in the series
so glad pikmin is getting more recognition!!!! been a fan since pikmin 1!
I never get tired of those little pikmin noises, and oatchi makes it even better
No exaggeration, this game is a 10/10 masterpiece. Loved the series since the release of the first one and this is the magnum opus. Delivers on every front and then some.
Hope they do another one this one gave us so much and literally tells us they can do more if they really want too
Probably in 10 years.
@@TheOneToKeepYouWaiting I know that pikmin 4 took so long its almost a meme but seeing how much pikmin 4 is selling, theres a really high chance we'll get more pikmin way sooner than we think we will, we're back pikbros, we're back.
I think in one of the endings Olimar says until next time or something
@_.Dylan._ man when I saw that I lost my mind I was like bro don't play with me lmao
@@timothykennedy4631 Yes I’m putting on the clown makeup but I really do feel like the next Pikmin game won’t take 10 years to come out
This game finally allowed me to seek revenge on the waterwraith and the crippling childhood trauma and nightmares it imbued onto me.
I'm glad. It's my favorite series so it's awesome seeing so many new people pick it up.
Im happy to see this review. Pikmin 4 is the best game I've played in years. Full of surprises, and I'm loving it.
Decided to buy the game because of this video, and it 100% delivered
Dude, I just want to let you know that, despite now being someone that doesn't have time for video games but still casually plays them, that whenever you make a review on a game and you're like 'this is good', I buy it. You are my gold standard of video game reviews. Thank you for the work my guy.
pikmin 4 is the first pikmin game ive played and i couldnt put it down!!! excited to play the rest of them now :)))
Thanks Dunkey for making content for strand-type gamers.
You got 36 platinum medals in 6 hours?! Or do you consider story mode to be “the game”?
@@ShuckleShellAnemiamy little brother does the same thing lol. It reminds me of Xqc skipping through elden ring and then acting like it wasn’t a memorable experience
@ShuckleShellAnemia The story mode is the reason to buy the game, the mission modes are there for people that want more. This is true for all 4 games.
@@peco595 story mode is the tutorial, mission mode is the endgame
@ShuckleShellAnemia No, story mode is why people get the game in the first place. Mission modes are side content optional to seeing the end of the game, they are not the main appeal to the casual player.
so sad that this was dunkey's last video before he became a pikmin, Rest in Peace.
He feels like a purple Pikmin!!
@@KidAL0yeah hes..hes sittin there
I love pikmin, as its arguably my favorite series, it just makes me sad that my grandmother who also loved the series passed away right before it came out, R.I.P. Grandma
Your grandma sounds like she was pretty cool
What ShuckleShell said. I'm really sorry for your loss.
Damn, similar thing happened to me. My dad, who played Pikmin with me when I was younger and he really enjoyed it, passed away the same day as Pikmin 4 was announced.
I’m sorry for you loss bro, my condolences.
RIP Grandma.
Already one of my favorite games of all time tho, I haven’t had this much fun with a new game since Elden Ring
idk, i thought beach area with the tide pools with coral in them and such was a pretty big departure from what the series has done prior atleast
Are there Bulbmin?
I guess not all “pikmin” made it into 4 lol. I feel like the glow pikmin fill that bulbmin role tho
The beach zone was probably the coolest area in the game. I liked the house too, but the rest of them are just similar enough to not feel that different. I haven’t 100% beat the last thicket area yet so not sure about that one. Kinda miss the dynamic rainy weather in pikmin 3 too
As a beginner to the Pikmin series. That Tutorial was absolutely massive for me. Funny enough so many of my Pikmin still die 😂
This is my first pikman game. I never had any of the other Nintendo consoles. I’m having a lot of fun playing so far!
All the other games are on Switch now I believe
@@Xonica124all of them except the one that matters

Pikmen 4 was absolutely AMAZING
The environment, the gameplay Phenomenal
I dint think the gane innovated much but definitely perfected
But I do wish they made it so you could have 200 pikmen and tailor the game to that size enemies, objectives etc
I played Pikmin 3 and was somewhat left empty by its length. But this game real good. It’s amazing how good it is. Oatchi is scientifically the cutest thing in existence.
I’m glad Oatchi got the full dunkview he deserved
Why hasn't Zelda?
@@TravelerZ24 He’s probably still 100%ing it. I’m sure he’ll drop the cell-shaded Nuts & Bolts review soon
@@TravelerZ24 He never properly reviewed BotW either. Wait for his Best of 2023 video.
I love when a series is so long lived that sequels become their own love letters.
3 is better.
I'm glad to say that Pikmin just got its 21st player
I bought this game because of this review.
I haven’t played Pikmin since Pikmin 2, picked up Pikmin 4 at launch. Absolutely love it, such a good, fun and relaxing game!
4 is basically a love letter to 2, makes sense
Imagine making a full game review just to use the punchline "You better 'pick' this one up!" .... chef's kiss.
Gotta love Dunkey, he's the only RUclipsr/Gamer with the balls to admit their most anticipated game for 2023 was Pikmin 4, great video!
Pikmin 4 is a god damn masterpiece. I havent 100% a game for a while but this had me dialed in for a week STRAIGHT
the fact that dunkey said this was his most anticipated game of the year (over things like totk, starfield, etc) really goes to show how good pikmin is
SO GLAD THE DUNKSTER LOVED IT!! Such an underrated franchise
Couldn't agree more! This one made it onto my top 10 favorite games of all time!
Pikmin 2 is still my favorite game of all time it’s good to see so many features returning that were skipped in 3
thanks for this review man got a switch just to play this because of your review and i have to say this is the first single player game ive really enjoyed since red dead 2, im probly gonna buy the pikmin 1+2 bundle for the switch after i beat 4
If you have your Oatchi nearly maxed out with his abilities, you can just send him on his own to fight Empress Bulblax and throw a bone at him to revive him each time.
100 rock pikmin does the job they're immune to crushing
This video made me get pikmin 4 and i hsve never played a pikmin game before
Spoilers for those who don’t know what he means by the post game being good:
After rescuing Olimar, you are given the opportunity to play through the first 4 areas of the game again, remixed, as captain Olimar, with a 15 day time limit to get all 30 ship parts with just red blue and yellow pikmin. It is essentially pikmin 1 remix, and it is very cool and fun. Your reward for beating it is that Olimar’s ship gets fixed and you unlock the trial of the Sage leaf, which also has sick rewards if you beat it.
4:53 the dad jokes are already setting in
I will forever remember Pikmin as the series that made me fulfill my desire to send underlings to their deaths in droves that wasn't an RTS. Also I love Oatchi.
Pikmin is an RTS. Pikmin are cutesy Zerglings
There's also the evil Pikmin game called "Overlord".

This game is a masterpiece and I am so happy to see it get some love
This game really makes you feel like picking up a copy of Wave Race Blue Storm.
3:44 this is the equivalent of sea shanties to pikmin, isn't it
Ty for the hype. I'm one of the two people out of all my friend groups that are a Pikhead so I needed this.
The kind of game that really does take ten whole years to make
Thank you Dunkey for making another Pikmin game. It's been too long. The fact that this game actually came out on time is amazing..
Damn pikmin is such a good game. So many awesome memories
