Matt, and WordPress also benefit from Private Equity. Matt IS Private Equity. There is no valid complain, just a thinly veiled extortion campaign so that Matt gets his pound of flesh (8%).
Matt's strategy is a complete anathema to true open source. You are absolutely destroying everything you've built in the most childish way possible. Disgraceful
No it isn't. The wordpress & WooCommerce trademarks were never "open source" - which is all this is about. WP is not denying WPEngine access to the source code, and it's perfectly reasonable for them to expect WPEngine to front the bill for update servers instead of landing that cost on an open source project. Hosts almost always provide their own Linux image servers, and mirror repo's for package updates to minimise cost and improve the user experience (faster updates)
@seg_fault_jim do you have a definition of "true open source" that would support your statement? When I reflect on Linux or Arduino or Apache WS, I think Matt's comments reflect my understanding of the principles under which most OS communities operate.

The issue is by giving him this type of audience he uses it as an echo chamber. The more people cut him off from attention the more he will be forced to make his own chambers and they won’t last.
@@ryanolson4844 Well, why is the echo chamber a problem? That's basically just social media right? Frankly he's going to get obliterated in court, you should check out the complaint(s). By the time he settles he definitely won't be yapping any more, because it's going to be very painful for him!

I ran into this video by chance and I find interesting that those who seem to want to help Matt should probably stop "interviewing" him and let the dust settle rather than adding more wood to the fire. I didn't listen to it all as it is mostly a rehearsal of other videos out there and I believe some want time with him just to benefit from the current controversy he is in and using him to get more visibility to their channel. I did skip forward to the end of the video about "Conspiracy Theories" and what a way to inject a conspiracy within a conspiracy segment "They have these dormant things that they have been waiting for a while... sleeper cells". To me that is clearly a conspiracy that WPEngine has been waiting to unleash these X accounts which proves my point of adding wood to the fire. Don't get me wrong, I have known about Matt for many years from back in the b2 days and even had an opportunity to meet him in person while he was handing out WordPress shirts at SWSW with the single "W" printed on the front (which I still have), so it is hard to see Matt grow the WordPress platform and community for many years and regardless of his intentions seeing these podcasters interviewing him to get the "latest" or "in realtime" just makes things more difficult for everyone.
WPEngine expecting WP to do all the work and funding that their company runs on is insane. Its frankly irresponsible that they didnt have their own update mirrors and expected WP to front that bill while making hundreds of millions from it.
People asked Matt to add an option to use other mirrors, and he said he’ll never let it happen as long as he’s in charge of WordPress! Like everything else he says, it’s disingenuous: he actually wants people to be use the servers he controls, so he has leverage over them.
It's time for a fork which is, for the most part, a line-by-line copy of Wordpress; similar to the way that MariaDB is to MySQL. So the next time Matt decides to pull this shit, people can move away to a project outside his purview.
