I actually enjoyed the book. Louise ignoring pupkins antics at first made sense since the family tends to ignore traumatic events. I’ll agree that Mark not saying that it’s the puppet didn’t make sense however Louise would’ve ignored him anyways.
I see where people say “why didn’t she just kick the puppet, it’s just a puppet.” But I think the author did a decent job describing Pupkins strength. To me it sounded like malevolent forces gave Pupkin strength and that’s why he was able to pin Louise down. And why it was difficult to take him off someone’s hand (also the person wielding Pupkin would lend their strength to Pupkin to keep it from being pulled off)

I’m a big fan of Grady Hendrix and How to Sell a Haunted House was one of my favs of last year. With that said, I totally get why it may not work for a lot of people. Agreed the title and cover are pretty misleading. I’m a big fan of camp and OTT horror so I ate it up! I’d suggest Southern Bookclubs Guide to Slaying Vampires as it still has the charm and spookiness, but far less campy and less violent!

I just finished this book, and I was a little disappointed but overall enjoyed it. I loved My Best Friend's Exorcism, but mostly because I'm old and all the 80s references made my heart happy. I will say I think if you're over 40, it might appeal more if you are a horror/scary movie fan. How to Sell a Haunted house gave me original Poltergeist vibes, so maybe it's just the nostalgia that I love about his writing.

I've read a few of Grady Hendrix's books and all provoked different reactions in me. "We Sold Our Souls" was pretty ok, "Horrorstör" was disappointing, and I absolutely HATED "My Best Friend's Exorcism". 😤
About this book, I have no plans of ever reading it. I love haunted house stories and this sounds like it would frustrate me big time.
I still have "Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" and "Final girl Support Group" in my physical tbr.... I hope to God I like them... 🤞🏻🙄

I’ve read two Grady Hendricks books, My Best Friend’s Exorcism and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. Both were campy. And I didn’t enjoy either one. But I think horror can be campy but done well, like Clown in a Cornfield. It was clearly a take on 80’s and 90’s horror movies. But it was fun and well executed, imo. But the Grady Hendricks camp was just way over the top and not believable at all.

I've read a good few Grady Hendrix books. They're all kind of tongue in cheek horror stories. We're doing horror, but we're also gently making fun of horror, but we're also doing horror anyway. I'm not a regular horror reader, but it works for me. Of the ones I've read, I've liked them all but this was maybe the toughest to digest. I'm surprised to see how successful he is. Several of his books have over 100,000 ratings on goodreads, which makes them real blockbusters I guess.

I read this book for a book club. Everyone in the group really liked it, but I wasn't a fan. I didn't hate this book, it just wasn't my thing. But I read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix and I liked those a lot more. Not as satirical/silly.

I read this and really enjoyed it. Most of Hendrix's books are comedy horror and very campy, I find them to be funny and entertaining reads. My favorite of his is My Best Friend's Exorcism, its very campy but the friendship depicted in it was very heartwarming and felt sincere. If you want to try something of his less campy and more on the creepy side, The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is a good one. Less silly humor and more creepy build up (though there is some ridiculous violence at the end still)

I've only read this one and My Best Friend's Exorcism. Best Friend was really good, great horror, also very 80s campy too. A little satire, but not silly in the way this one was. I was mostly enjoying Haunted House until the end. While it made for a good mystery, it just wasn't very satisfying after all the siblings had gone through.

It was a bit like a disaster that you can’t look away from for me, I couldn’t put it down 😂 😅 I really liked Southern Bookclub’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, it was quite different in vibes but still a weird mix of funny and horror, and a lot of serious relationship and societal themes.

I tried to read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and could not make it through. I'm not a graphic horror/violence fan. I'm more of a creepy vibes/spooky mystery fan. I could not put the book down for the first half because I found it entertaining, but those BAM! out of nowhere moments of extremely icky violent/gross descriptions were not my cup of tea. Kudos to the author for being so effective in their descriptions to make the reader's skin crawl, but it always felt at odds with the silly/campy tone of the premise.

Book wasn't the greatest, and I figured out the plot twists early on, but it's ok if you want a fluffy read. Read Horrorstor & Final Girls and they were just ok, but heard the Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is one of his better reads, so may try that at some point.
