I am not sure why so many people are up in arms about this video. As he stated in the title “…Buyer Beware.” Was there a better more tactful way he could have worded things, sure, but after watching the video - I can honestly say that I don’t think he meant ALL sellers using Ebay or Amazon. What I saw/heard was a passionate gardener, deeply angered and frustrated by the fact that there are individuals using these reputable vendors to scam gardeners.
“I hope I drove this point home; you guys need to be really really careful.” Do your research. Be informed. There is some shady garbage going on. You have to be really careful these days. GO TO A PLACE YOU TRUST. “I just can’t stand the stuff that’s going on, the lack of respect for beginning gardeners….” (His words)
Over and over he says go to someone/somewhere/anywhere you trust and be mindful.

Matt, I saw the original title and I agree that it was not ideal - it could have been worded better (as seen by the new title). But if the same people who got so upset and/or 'unsubscribed' watched the video. They would have heard him say:
“I just can’t stand the stuff that’s going on, the lack of respect for beginning gardeners….” and go to someone/somewhere/anywhere you trust and be mindful.
He was not trying to say all vendors were bad, just be careful. Someone/somewhere/anywhere includes those reputable sellers on ebay, amazon...etc. There is a knee-jerk reaction epidemic in social media today; sadly few seem willing to read/look beyond the initial subject introduction.

But I also looked up the seller and made sure they were local. I feel bad for the people that don’t look into things before making purchases. (I got banned because a seller from China didn’t like that I wasn’t happy receiving a broken item. When they offered to give me a refund only after I gave them a good review I reported the seller & amazon blocked me from making any reviews) 🤦🏻‍♀️

Buying high quality seeds is very important. But the issue is who you buy them from, not where. I always buy from Westcoast Seeds, and they sell on Amazon. The difference between $1 and $3 is so small, why risk all your gardening time and space on growing a plant that will have bad production or bad germination.

I've had some issues with Amazon UK. I purchased a propagator and on opening it (I'm an engineer) despite ordering a 25W heater, it was 15W. I asked for a replacement. When that came, the same. And the cable was marked 25W. I asked for a third one and again the same. I demanded a partial refund and kept the last one. Recently, I ordered Snow Banana seeds. Got something, 100% germination but pretty sure they aren't Banana's. Out of interest, this is illegal in the UK (if done intentionally) under our Trades Descriptions Act.

People need to think very critically when making any purchase on the internet. Look beyond reviews, go the extra step and see who the vendors are, do they have a passion for gardening? Are they knowledgable about gardening? What are their credentials? Do they have social media pages? Are they acknowledged by key players in the industry? Also, you need to see if you can get the seeds for free at a local seed exchange organization/event!
I admit, when I first got into gardening, I had no idea where to buy my seeds. I certainly didn't want to buy anything from Monsanto. I had to do a lot of online researching and I also went to the library and looked at the back of gardening books where they list resources to buy seeds, then I talked to other people and now I know where to get my seeds. I bought some from MIGardener too! Now I have an abundance of seeds and I save so many of my own.

You must plant those seeds and see what they are. Every first grader knows that when an equally skeptical boy named jack carelessly tossed the bean seeds he traded for, they grew to enormous heights and resulted in him acquiring a goose that lays golden eggs. Your curiosity should get the better of you, but regardless you do not know by experiment that those seeds do not produce some weird plant that has blue strawberry like fruit. You have to close that loop before you can render your final verdict, even if by experience you know your not going to get blue strawberries. You said it yourself, you do not know what those seeds are. So plant them and show us the result. It might be an interesting plant, and those seeds at the very least share the honors of natural selection that might have taken 3 billion years. Besides, you paid for them. If you were not going to continue the experiment why take that first step? To be on total solid ground, you have to grow them, otherwise we just have your judgement call and tortured seeds that went half way around the world only to be disrespected. The seeds are not responsible for the sins of the seller, they are seeds and should get a chance to grow.

I appreciate your video for it's content and your intent. I'm in my 70s and I grew up in an erra where everyone including and especially merchants had to be honest in their advertising claims. I just became aware if you from someone I trust who grouped you with Baker Seed as the go to real deal. Dan at Arms Family. I will be shopping at your store as well as Baker's very soon. There is no accountability for merchants today in any category and the Chinese are masters at false claims and rippoffs. I've been stung so oftenbi can't count. I bought three drones from one merchant who promptly took my money ( transaction is matter of record in my PayPal account) and never shipped. After nearly 6 months they simply dissmissed my claim and had my comments "removed" from the internet!!???!! Ni such thing as safe shopping out of the USA or on ebay from chinese merchants. I miss America. I will be pursueing your catelog ( or list?) in the next few days. Keep the faith n stay your path. Sincerely Dandahermit

I ordered some purple pampas grass for $9.99 which took forever to arrive and they were from China. The ad didn't say that. I planted them and I have a green thumb and....nothing.
However, I ordered some crowder peas from Ebay from Two Willies Nursery and I planted some and they were about 1-2 inches high in two days and are doing wonderfully if I can keep my dog from trampling them. I am very impressed with them.
I have started saving seeds from veggies that I get that are awesomely good and it's so exciting to think about starting them next Spring.
I love your videos! I am disabled so cannot plant to the extent that I would like, but it's in my blood.
Something I have always thought was amazing is that my Daddy could take a dead stick and put it in the ground and it would grow into something beautiful. He had the greenest thumb I've ever seen! Me.....nope....couldn't get a cactus to grow. Then, when Daddy got into his 90's and could no longer garden, everything I touched turned to beautiful plants. It was like he finally passed on the green thumb to me. After he died, at 95, and we were cleaning out all my parents' things, (my parents were married for 71 years and died very close together,) I found a little jewelry box in his storage room and there were 4 kernels of corn in it. My sister turned up her nose and said, "What on earth! Throw that away!" but no. It is in my china cabinet now because, I knew, he must've had a really good crop that year and wanted to save some seeds. My sister had no interest in gardening. One time she was over at my house and I was washing up a mess of turnip greens and asked her if she wanted a turnip that I had accidentally pulled up. I remembered she used to love raw turnips when we were kids. She did not want it and I said something about I hated to waste it, but I didn't really like turnips, only turnip greens. She looked at me like I was the stupidest person on the planet....as only a sibling can look....and said, "Well, if you like turnip greens, but not turnips, why don't you just plant the greens?" OMGosh, that was so funny. We haven't spoken in over two years, but I remember that day with mirth every time I think of it.
Thank you for letting me share.

I've seen those ads. They are cleverly labeled so that they come up when you are searching for something else. I've come to recognize that any kind of odd seeds being sold from some place in China are probably bogus. Your "strawberry seeds" look a lot like hemp seeds. I'm not sure, but once I worked in a pet supply/ garden center store where we sold sterilized hemp seed as bird food and they were about that size and shape. For a laugh, search for "monkey face flower". The picture is of a Dracula orchid. (Yes, there is a real genus of orchids named for Dracula.) The trouble is that to grow that genus from seeds needs laboratory like conditions for germination, greenhouse atmosphere and temperatures, and about six years for the plant to reach flowering size. Caveat Emptor.

Great laker - no, they're not coated. If a tiny strawberry seed was coated this much, the seed would never be able to sprout! It's staggering to me how so many people could be so ignorant and uninformed about this. Strawberries are usually sold as runner cutoffs, not seeds. It should be a living plant. It's extremely rare for anyone reputable to be selling strawberry seds. You just don't do it.
Any heirloom plants or seeds, I get from The Diggers Club in Australia. Highly reputable, and for the most part, grow all their own seeds and bulbs and plants that they sell.
They don't send overseas though. Only in Australia....as well they should.
Source seeds, bulbs and plants from your own country only.

Hi, MI. I'm sorry to say this, but I unfortunately fell for this with raspberries, blueberries strawberries and kale seeds alike, since the seeds aren't in the local hardware stores (the closest to the kale was spinach, which I *did* get). I know you have *kale* seeds for sale on your website, but is there any possibility that you will sell strawberry seeds in the near future? The "blue" strawberry seeds *I* got *looks* like strawberry seeds, but I'm still not convinced. Also, I noticed your complete growing guide on *strawberries* lacks what you have to do to grow them from *seed* and it instead focuses on buying dominant crowns at nurseries. Will there be an edit of that by any chance in the near future? I don't think you have a guide on that on your website, either.

I have had excellent experiences buying seeds and plants from eBay and Etsy. I have a two-acre field of Aronia berry plants (Nero) that I started from seed purchased from eBay. Started in 2015, they are producing berries this third year when all the information I read said it would take from 5 to 8 years to bear fruit when started from seed. I ordered more seed from the same seller and have another 1600 plants started in my greenhouse now. I've purchased Comfrey and Sweat potato plants off from Etsy, they are growing well. Now, I wouldn't buy colored roses that look totally photo shopped but you have to pay attention to what appears real and to reviews and feedback. ...and don't buy a Ford truck. Had one once, it quit working! Don't ever buy a Ford....Ha!

john b you are lucky! common sense is there's not blue strawberries! There's not rainbow roses he's talking about common sense things that don't exist! my partner buys things from China for his work that have nothing to do with gardening and he's been ripped off so many times and they do not back him up and that's on eBay. They don't back him up at all so it's not just seeds. Again you're very lucky! anything coming from overseas house to be irradiated so you're dealing with creepy stuff now seeds don't germinate if it irradiated if which would make them sterile if I'm not mistaken. So they've had to be doused in serious chemicals to not pass bugs from country to Country it's the law! I love the fruit all of the fruit in Asian stores has been irradiated if it's from Asia. same goes for seeds they have to be doused in something extremely toxic so why you'd want something from there I don't know? the point of this was all of these blue and tomato trees and Pepper's the size of a three-year-old four-year-old children don't exist. There's thousands of cases against these people but they make the company so much money that they stand behind them or just ignore it. you can't believe the things I've been through now there are reputable people but they're not selling bright blue things or rainbow roses or vines that grow things that wouldn't grow on vines and these remarkable amazing plants that wash your windows and do your dishes there on there there's somebody getting about $5 a kernel of corn because it's supposed to be corn that's so rare yet 20 people are selling it!?!? your seeds are covered with something cancer-causing I'm glad they worked for you?

If you are and experienced gardener and are willing to take a chance, go ahead. however he is just saying to use caution. if you are not experienced and may fall for the multicolored rose seed, for example, you are better off buying from a reliable company, or from an established youtube person like MI gardener. what he is saying is just to beware what you are buying and let your experience guide you. common sense advice.
