Folkestone & Dungeness :: Day Ride

- I've know Alan for many, many years and in those years we have done many, many rides together.
And every one of those rides, literally every single one, has involved Alan driving to either stay at my house or pick me up and drive somewhere further afield.
This video represents the first time that I have ever been to visit him.
We were blessed with a totally beautiful day of frosty landscapes, calf skies and bright sun. We rode from Alan's new house in Folkestone down to Dungeness and then back along the sea front.
No camping, no wilderness, no poetry or misguided attempts at philosophy, just a day ride in a new place with an old chum.

Whether you do or not, thank you for watching, your support means the world to me :)
This is how cycling should be. Taking your time. exploring. Going where the wind and your curiosity take you. This is just my kind of cycling. You can do it on just about any bike. You don't need the latest and greatest. This is what cycling is all about. You've captured the essence. A big thank you from your newest subscriber.
Great feedback indeed, and I completely agree!
I'm a big proponent of exploring locally and finding beauty and adventure in the books and crannies that many overlook.
This was a great ride in a place I knew nothing about and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I'm glad you did too 😁
"This is the first time you've come to visit"... "I don't like you that much" LOL A great day! Thanks!
It was a great day, I'm glad you enjoyed it too.
There should be another coming soon. I'm back down for a second visit next week if the weather holds out!
Alan has never said so much! Beware Jeffers, today a co-star... tomorrow a new order!
That is the hope!
I'm grooming him to set up his own channel.
The idea is that he documents his projects building up bikes from old frames he gets off ebay then we test the bikes on a ride together.
He has assured me this will happen once his house is a bit less... building sitey ;)
A much needed ray of sunlight to brighten these darker days. Happy New Year.
I am very happy to be a ray of sunshine. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride :)
There will hopefully be another with Alan very soon. Hopefully just as enjoyable and even more sunny!
Jethro, I was born near Dungeness and my mums side of the family lived there for generations. I now live in Folkestone. Lovely to see you down this neck of the woods. ❤
It was lovely to be there. I was actually down again this weekend just gone and we rode the other way along the cliffs to Dover.
It wasn't quite such a nice ride but we got some epic views and it's always nice to explore.
There may be a video in it but I've not checked back over the footage yet. We shall see.
My type of cycling. It’s all about snotty road bikers down here. Love the bikes these two are riding ❤
Thanks. My bike is very much built for trundling along in comfort. It won't any races but it is a pleasure to ride :)
Perfectly timed! I want a day ride for me and my 85 y.o. e-bike riding Dad who lives in Kent: this looks perfect...thank you.
Sounds like a good fit. The roads were all pretty quiet and not a hill to be seen.
We passed a few pubs where you could probably stop for lunch as well. Keep off the shingle down at Dungeness though, that was killer.
That was a nice little adventurette. Such a contrast of sunshine and ice. Alan's quote of the day.."It's like frozen ice!" I'll take his word for it, as I've personally never come across unfrozen ice..unless that applies to..well..just water!?!?🤔
I'm watching this one, after viewing some of your posts that are a couple of years old. So your opening in this one; about where Alan was these days; almost worked for a moment! Then you planned across to his "Surly" with his Geoff handlebars👌. That's the second time I've mentioned those bars in your posts..only because I've recently purchased a pair myself! Top bars Alan 👍.
I like the way that at the end of the ride, you talk, (and refer to a previous post of yours..that I am yet to view)about doing local rides..then champion doing new, unknown "non-local" rides!
Dont you find that that happens so many times in life!? Where one has opinions that are the antithesis of each other. And though one is equally passionate about either stance; this in turn negates, and simultaneously emphasizes both! Love that!
Take care Jethro.
I don't even have opinions any more. Just fleeting thoughts that seem to change day to day 😉
I think, as with most things, there is no single "correct" view. There is a lot to be gained from riding local - as I explain in the mentioned vid - but equally exploring into the unknown has its own set of benefits.
It's all about balance. As always.
I haven't been doing enough adventure rides recently and the local loops are becoming a little repetitive.
Let's see if I can remedy this once spring has sprung 😉
@@JethroJessop Have you heard of the Calder Divide Trail? That looks a nice adventure! I think a charity ride is organised each year, and there are three versions of it; the longest being about 150 miles.
But obviously anyone can do it anytime they want to. The charity events are probably best avoided; especially if peace and tranquility are desired.
When I've a few miles under my belt, it's one that I'm really looking forward to having a go at (as well as the Badger Divide..obviously!)..especially as it's only about 50 or so miles from my neck of the woods.
I'm sure you've already heard of it, but if not give it a perusal. It looks fantastic, moors, canals, gravel tracks, valleys, and rivers. It would make a great series of aesthetically pleasing posts!?!?
Take care Jethro.
@@timporter8886 i actually haven't heard of that one!
I shall look it up and most likely add it to my ever growing list of future potential rides 😉
There are so many new routes popping up these days one can hardly keep track so thanks for the heads up!
Happy day
Indeed it was 😁
I been to these places the lighthouse at dungeress are a must do
We didn't get that close to the lighthouse sadly. We saw it but by that point we were both flagging and starting to think about dinner.
There are a few points of interest that I've since found around there so I expect we'll be back at some point to revisit
Nice one. Thought I recognised parts of the landscape and compared the strava routes. Yes, been there on my summer UK trip. It was just slightly warmer back in July ;-)
Yeah I guess you would have been right through there if I remember your route details right.
I've never really been there before so it was an adventure for me. But yeah, pretty chilly.
A nice part of the world, that farm shop did rather good flavoured milk 👍. Glad you make it over to my neck of the woods. If only we'd known, we could have waved flags on your passing on the train ! Hope Alan enjoys his new home.
It was something of a last minute trip.
A part of the world I know very little about so it was good to get out and explore. I'll be back down again very soon so mare videos from the region coming soon I hope!
Please have Alan tell us about his Surly
There is an idea being banded around that Alan will start his own channel. He'll build bikes and document the process then the two of go out for a ride and test them out.
I'm nudging him in that direction so once his house is sorted out this may actually happen!
Nice companionship - not frosty at all!
There's nothing warmer :)
Another beautiful ride, thank you.
I believe Jethro and Alan are about to enter the pantheon of great British duos, Arthur Daley and Terry McCann, Ray Doyle and William Bodie, Basil Fawlty and Manuel. Good Luck.
That's the plan! Greatness awaits for us both in 2023!
We'll hit the big time as a duo, make our fortunes, have a public falling out, unsuccessful solo careers and finally a massive emotional reunion!
It's gonna be quite a year :)
ahhh lovely Alan... evening all, as you were x
That's one way to describe him ;)
That was a bloody good ride.
….….Buttocks!
It really was!
Bring on the next one. Are doing your special dances to please the local weather gods?
@@JethroJessop Indeed. I’ve been doing the Lambada every evening between the hours of 7-9pm. We can now expect 23 degree heat with a gentle breeze ☀️
@@Alan_s_Channel Maybe sacrifice a few weasels too. Just for good measure?
All part of the Cantii Way I believe.
It is!
It has been noted that that route runs right past Alan's new place. Might be one that gets taken on this summer :)
Wow! My kind of cycling (mostly flat!) and a part of the country I would love to explore more. Dungeness is a fascinating and eerie landscape. Really enjoyed this video, thank you both..
Its well worth a visit. Eerie is definitely the word - beautiful but eerie.
Definitely a few rides to be had round there.
I'm fine thanks Allan.
"I took my helmet off to look cool,
Then cycled away like a fool".
J.Jessop 2023.
You said there was no poetry in this episode.
Good spot! It turns out my inner poet cannot be contained ;)
That Alan character has something of the Syd Little about him.
He is definitely a character ;)
More Alan action coming soon. We have another ride planned next week (weather permitting)
This reminds me I was cycling down a cycle track & 3 young lads went past me on their MTB s ,one of them shouted "Ice" & foolishly put my breaks on & I came out of it ,Then one of the lads shouted " that old man has really hurt himself " ok I'm 59 but actually looked round to look for an old man lol ..I'm going to cycle NCN 2 from Portsmouth to Dover & then the Canti way ,have you done that one ?
I literally just got in from riding along the cliffs to Dover from Folkstone. It was a beautiful day and there are some amazing views but inland it is incredibly muddy at the moment. That thick chalky clay that sticks to everything and clogs your drivetrain rigid.
But the Cantii way is on the list for consideration this summer. It looks nice but with not much holiday to play with I'm erring towards something a litte more wild. Maybe the Cairngorm.
@@JethroJessop Cairngorms is amazing I did that last year ,As I'm based in Ryde on the Isle of Wight ,I like the idea of popping over & picking up the NCN 2 doing The Canti way & coming back maybe the Southdown way depending how fit I'm feeling .Yes for me wet chalk must be avoided I'm not great on that stuff .
@@kevindean9613 I've always meant to look at the IofW for a ride just because it's a nice self contained place quite close to home.
But I love Scotland and I've always enjoyed riding there. I don't get much real wilderness where I am and I feel the draw of it all the time
😂
Not a winter ride without reference made to chilly buttocks!
This is very true but Alan does take it to the gratuitous extreme!
I was going to do an edit of just him saying "buttocks" but after I pointed it out I think he restrained himself ;)
I thought Alan rode a Stanforth. Why the move to Surley?
Alan is a man of multiple bikes. He also likes to buy old frames and build them up.
I keep telling him he needs to get his own channel where he documents his builds and then the two of us go out on a ride to test them.
He has assured me that once his house in order and his workshop is up and running this will become a thing so watch this space!
Well, will we be seeing a Cantii way buttocks bike packing
It has been discussed. Might be one for the summer.
I've got half an eye on the Second City Divide as well and maybe the Cairngorms Loop. All depends on how clever I can be with my holiday.
What a nice surprise seeing a video from you two in my inbox, as usual always great fun and entertaining. Those pies made me drool. I have not had a pie or a sausage roll in 7 years.
That farm shop was a real find. In the end I didn't rate the chocolate brownie at all - way too sweet and not good quality chocolate - but the pies and sausage rolls were absolutely fantastic and just what you need midway through a ride.
Glad you enjoyed the vid. There should be another ride with Alan coming fairly soon if the plans pan out so we'll be back on your screen in the not too distant I hope :)
