I bought the Autel ms906 with all the adapters. However even with the adapters, the scanner will not read anything before 1996 obd2! I have a 1990 obd1 Gm c1500 truck. How can I make it work to use this bidirectional scanner to do what I bought it for. Any advice will help since AUTEL basically just told me I am screwed. Please help!
@@gloknor it's a 1990 Chevy suburban with a 5.7 with a 4l60 transmission, (700r4), basically, only with electric overdrive. I can not tell if it is the transmission or some sort of fuel problem, or emissions problem, or an electric wiring problem. Will not shift right, and I have checked the timing and all the sensors a 100 times over. I just cannot get it to run right and shift right, and I am out of ideas. It would really help if I could see running engine parameters, because at this point, with no codes being given, I am at a loss.
@@opengnosis8555 So the engine is not running right either? .We have a 1989 suburban over here with same drivetrain . Let me ask you this because engine issues can be the problem causing trans to feel weird. Is your exhaust clear as in cat converter not clogged? Does it have plenty of vacuum? Another issue with an older truck like this are bad grounds . I need more details. Maybe I should get you my number so can call.
@@gloknor It starts, Idles, and runs as it should. The problem is it shifts hard into second, and feels like it is slipping out of overdrive, or 3rd gear when the vehicle is moving. I can hear a ticking, (that many would think is the fuel injectors or the distributor ticking), but I also think it could be the transmission pump that is ticking on mine. I do not know if it is the throttle kickdown transmission cable that is out of adjustment, or if it is my torque converter slipping, or if the lock up tcc solenoid is bad, or if the timing is off, or what. I disconnected the timing clip and have checked the timing many times, and it is where it needs to be. It has all new emissions sensors throughout the engine, along with a new EGR valve and all new vacuum hoses. The guy I bought it off replaced the TBI carburator unit and gave me 2 other ones with the truck when I bought it. I ohmed out and checked all wiring from the engine to the computer and to the transmission speed sensor and tcc harness. The truck has those vehicle speed buffer cards and a diode card under the dash I have also checked to see if the digital cards were broken or not causing the problem. All the instrument cluster gauges and lights work as they are supposed to. When I found the diode card under the dash, the diode circuit to the rear brake abs unit was fried, so I soldered the card so it worked correctly. What was strange was that when I got the truck, the brake light was on hard. The diode card was causing that and I fixed it. The truck also has a new knock sensor, but like I said, it gives no codes. The TPS sensor on the TBI unit reads the correct voltage up to 4.1 volts at wide open, and then only maxes out at 4.1 volts, never getting to 5 volts. I thought about just swapping in a new TPS sensor also, and also throwing in a new O2 sensor, just to throw parts at it, cause at this point, I am scratching my head. I finally confronted the guy I got the truck from, and told him just to be straight with me, because I just want to have a running truck that shifts right, and I am all out of ideas at this point with no luck. I asked him why he gave me all these extra parts for the vehicle, (if it never had a problem and always ran great for him). He told me he was having the same issues I was having with the truck till he took it to a guy who had a diagnostic computer, and was able to read the parameters while the truck was running. He said when he had the truck hooked up to the computer, the mechanic said the timing was way off and had to advance it like 15° just to make it right, and after that day he never had a problem with the truck, and sold it to me. Now when I got the truck, I turned the key to run,(not starting), and there was no (check engine) light on the dash. I read a wiring diagram and found out if the timing diagnostic wire is not connected, the check engine light will never illuminate, as it gets its power through this wire! After I hooked the wire up again, the light was on but the timing was way off. I corrected the timing, and fixed the diagnostic wire, and long story short, after timing the truck like the book says to do, and with all the wiring the way it should be, the truck started driving like shit after everything was fixed. The computer has been reset so many times at this point, there are no codes stored, and no codes ever come up, no matter how many miles I put on the truck. I should also add that the windshield wiper module, or wiper motor, one or the other, or both, are bad, because the wipers do not work like they are supposed to. They never "park" right. I only say this because when I was checking the brake switch and the cruise control switch, to verify they were working correctly, since the switches control the TCC lockup on my trans, I also replaced the wiper switch on my steering column, since the cruise control wiring goes through that switch also. So there you have it, without being able to hook a diagnostic computer up to the OBD1 port, to see operating parameters, IDK what the computer is doing, what the computer thinks the timing is at, or basically, what any of the sensors are reading to eliminate whether I have a computer problem, a fuel problem, a timing problem, or a transmission problem. Just really chaps my ass when a truck this simple, can give me such a headache, and if I was in any other situation than the one I am in now, with my own place to work on vehicles, with a reliable daily driver,(which is why I bought this truck because I was told it runs great, freshly rebuilt engine and trans, as I just wanted to leave this one stock and driving until I got into a place of my own to modify it), but now have 4 trucks that are all basically "bricks," $10,000's in parts and diagnostic tools that have gotten me nowhere, and of course I am still in the city where a guy is not allowed to collect and store vehicles, even on his own property, per city code, and I have no means to get out of the city to look for a garage, property, and basically a place where I can move myself and all my trucks and tools, so I can finally fix them all right and correctly. Of the 4 trucks, this 1990 Chevy suburban is the last one actually running and is drivable at the moment. My other truck, a 1997 k2500, I just rebuilt the 7.4 454 vortec, in the snow, and literally, out a fresh STP filter from AutoZone and new oil in it to break in the engine, and the filter literally imploded during my first test drive, and all the filter paper went into all the oil gallies, starving the crank and cam of oil, and I spun a main bearing on a test drive after rebuild. Now I am not saying I have bad luck, but what are the chances I, of all people and my situation, would be the one to get a defective STP filter that takes out an engine.... But I was.... And I seen to be that guy...with all the luck...that everyone I trust, and everything I buy, just fails me and completely lets me down... So in the end... Do you know what I should do.. Or do you know anyone looking to buy an Autel Scanner? Or how about a 1990 c1500 suburban fully restored, or a 1997 k2500, with full restore,(except paint job), both "Run great, just need engines." If I was to tell you I have over $20k in parts + the purchase prices, insurance, and registration, and let's not forget, each having full tanks of gas, one with a 30 gallon and another with a 35 gallon tank... Both having new fuel pumps and filters... Both with new injectors, also.. Well, like everyone else, I suppose you would look at me like I am crazy and offer me less than what it cost just to fill each of the gas tanks up these days . And the truth is, You may be correct to look at me that way.. Cause I have lost it a little.. Working on these trucks..
@@gloknor And I bought the Autel Scanner, because it had all the adapters that came with it, including the GM OBD1 adapter. When I bought the kit from Autel, some 2 years ago, none of their descriptions had that clause posted, (will only work on 1996 and up OBD1 vehicles). It wasn't long after I bought the scanner and could not return it, that I read up on and realized that everything after 1996 is OBD II, and only vehicles before 1996 are OBD I. Now let me ask you something, why would a company sell a computer they say will work on OBD I vehicles, which are all pre-1996, especially if they are GM OBD 1?) I mean, their OBD 1 adapter that comes with the kit clearly says GM on it and OBD 1 on it also. When I called them, they said yes, we give you the adapter, but unfortunately we do not sell the protocol software needed to run the scanner and adapter so that the scanner recognizes the ADAL software and can read the Vehicle computer on any vehicle before 1996.. I said.. Well Thank You Autel.. Again.. Another company sold me another $1000+ piece of digital equipment that is literally another paper weight for me to have and take up space, since the thing I bought it for, it does not do. I even asked if there was a way I could install the software myself, or add an "app" to the scanner so that I can use the bidirectional device just to read engine parameters and to read engine logs. They said "no" of course, and again, they do not offer any solution, and even told me if adding an "app" to the scanner was possible, an app that has the GM ADAL software installed, to read the trucks prom, eprom, or calpak, (what do I know), that they cannot recommend or offer an app to get per company rules and protocol.. Then that operator that took 3 days to get a call back from asked me.. "Have I helped you with every one of your problems today and are you completely satisfied with the assistance I offered you today?" How does a guy even answer a question like that when you realize the "kid," some hire fresh out of school who knows nothing about anything pre 2015, asks you a question like that as if he is just oblivious to how frustrated you are, but follows company policy to perfection when it comes to receiving, answering, and handling customer service calls?" It is like talking to someone with autism that you are completely frustrated with, but you just bite your lip, and just say, "yeah, you have been great," cause you know it is not right to yell at people or children with mental disabilities, that literally lack all common sense, even if they could calculate Earth's gravitational field.. I feel like I am living in a world where all the new generation of young professionals all have ADHD, or are on the Spectrum, all having some Dustin Hoffman Rainman super powers, but when it comes to common sense and just relating to everyday people... Well these corporations have the perfect jobs for them and I just described it.. As for me, if there is something cool my Autel can do, I am all ears! As long as I don't have to buy their updates and subscriptions, cause let's face it, I cannot even fix a 1990 truck, why would I need software that fixes a 2024 Mercedes or BMW?
Will any of these devices clone a 2013 Subaru ECM? Mine is intermittent, I have a replacement but the car will not run unless VIN number and other essentials are copied from old ECM.
This is usually outside of the scope of a traditional scanner, there are a few places that deal with scanning, coping data, updating the information in the ECM and even firmware in the PCM, and then cloning it to a new or refurbished ECM. But it is not advised to try this on your own, it takes a professional coder to make sure it is done right. There are a few professional Coders on RUclips that only do automotive ECM, PCM, TCM coding, and such, oh and they guarantee their work.
True, if a scanner can't be updated it is no good, too many things change. But from what I see is if your scanner can not be updated after repeated attempts, contact the manufacturer of the scanner, it may be a fake pirated copy of the real brand name unit.
Here is my question and dilemma, How can we be assured that it is a Real original product, like Launch, Thinkpad etc. ? Many people buy them on E-bay or Amazon, to only find out they have bought a cheap pirated Fake copy of these brand names, And find out these scanners do not work or it says to update your unit right way right out of the box and when you try to, it repeatedly fails to update and say to contact Launch. Only to find out (Launch US says they do not allow dealers to sell on Amazon or E-bay and the scanner you just bought is a fake and they can not help you, or the worst case scenario the unit blows up a PCM. TCM. ECM computer in your car costing thousands of Dollars.
