This should be required viewing for every camper purchase! JR this is one of the best videos you have done. Our dealer went through 90%. You covered the hitch ball safety pin as well as brake controller which they did not. Fun fact brake controllers are required in my state. I have to hitch the trailer up and do the driving due to my husband's health. Connecting and disconnecting the ball always gave me fits I like the method you use to hold the lever better than what we were shown.
I'm a mom who's entertaining the idea of buying a small RV and truck and forcing my 3 kids to spend lots of quality time in small quarters :) sway looks terrifying so I've watched so many videos on RV safety. This one is the best!! TY for such easy and clear explanations and actually showing every part of hookup!!
Glad it helped....we have a ton of videos on here about towing and camping and tips and tricks even how to shave your legs....so give the videos a watch we maybe able to answer a ton of questions. Take a look at the road trip video....might put you at ease on a ton of stuff
I dont even have a travel trailer currently and I'm still watching these videos because they are hilarious and informative. Good job guys, If I wasn't 5k miles from you I would definitely buy a trailer from your company.
I watched this video the first time right after you made it and it made a huge difference in my towing the travel trailer behind my 2007 Ford F-250 2wd Diesel. We've upgraded to a 2019 Ford F-250 4wd gasser with a 6 in lift so I wanted to see what I may have forgotten since setting and forgetting the last truck. Thank you very much for your details, your reasons behind the why of it all and your sense of humor!
I have to say, not only are your videos informative they are also entertaining. Thanks and keep up the good work. If you were closer to my location I would definitely shop at your RV center.
I just put this system on my new camper and have been worried that I did it correctly. This video has set my mind a little more at ease. This will be the first trip with our keystone BHKWE and our new GMC 250hd. Everyone I have talked to says it should be fine. Fingers crossed!
Let us know how it went. Equalizer also has a channel on youtube that has good information....the person doing the videos for equalizer is not as good looking, smart, or humble as the one for Keystone RV Center
So far, I've viewed 2 of your videos and I have to say, I'm grateful that you've done them. I'm adjusting to my first trailer and you make me feel so very much more competent. Thank you.
Looking at getting the Equal-I-zer E4 hitch , have our third traveler trailer and experinening sway with a lifted truck and camper. I think this will be a big help. Good job on Video and install.
This is such a great video very informative. Watching someone do these things is so much better than reading a manual this makes it so much easier. I'm willing to let my kids be the genie pigs and making them stay in the trailer while we travel I think it would make the trip more relaxing. I won't make a video because of all the Karen's but I'll let you guys know how it went lol.
Hey JR, another outstanding video! Good explanation for squeezing the trailer brake and giving it gas in order to get of of a serious sway. I have a WD hitch and have never had a sway problem, but it is good to know how to get out of it if it does happen. Thank You!
When I tell you why the chains are crossed, you will feel silly for not seeing it.. .. IF the chain does not drag the ground when crossed then the chain itself holds the tongue of the trailer off the ground so it won't dig into the road and turn the tongue into a pole vault... !!! Law doesn't matter this is just common sense. BTW -- loved this video. Good job!
Do you need the breaker bar to put on the weight distribution bars because you stated they go on pretty easy mine go on easy as well I just use my hands and put it over thank you for your time and thank you for the video
you really do not. I do it most times without unless I am in a hurry or I am trying to teach how to use the bar. I teach it in the video because if you do not have a power tongue jack or a tongue jack failure
Junior, fantastic videos. I am a newby and it's the small things he teaches. I needed to see how the handle goes into place on the hitch and at what number to set the trailer brakes. I have asked others and can't get an answer.
Pulling inspiration from the late Patrice O' Neal- "JR is a legend, his funniness is a legend. But when I say legend, I mean a myth... like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot. We all believe they exist, but who really ever saw it?" -Mark
very small item; you mentioned to not leave the emergency brake pin out but not why; I believe the reason is because when it is out it is sending power to the trailer brakes and engaging the brakes will use energy, either battery or other. Once settled in to a campground and heard the inverter working and didn't know why. Checked everything and found out the emergency cable had gotten stuck on something and pulled out so it was "working" i.e., engaging the brake. Is that explanation correct? And what would have happened? Brakes continue to heat up or the wires overheat eventually? Thanks !!
Yes it will heat up the magnets in the breaks and eventually cause issues. We did a video on it a while back featuring cousin eddy explaining it more but yes it will damage the breaking potentially.
Great video, lots of good information. What about equalizer’s instructions to measure the front axle height to make sure weight is properly distributed?
This is only a video on how to hook up the E4, measurements are in reference to the installation process or to check that the system is setup properly. This system was already set up and inspected prior to this video being shot so we knew that it was correct.
On the older trucks (when we shot this video) It did not work when with sway control the truck would constantly fight the sway system and almost shake you off the road at times. Not an issue in todays world
Yes. "Ideally, when installing or adjusting the hitch, the tow vehicle and trailer should be loaded just as they will be while traveling. This includes full propane and fresh water tanks and any cargo (Passengers & gear) the tow vehicle or trailer will carry, including ATVs for toy haulers" Equalizer owners manual -JR
JR - These videos are great! I have a hitch question. I have a Keystone Hideout 31FBDS with a 900 pound hitch weight. I pull it with a F150 eco boost and fastway e2 hitch rated for 10,000 pounds. I get a lot of sway. I am guessing I am over my tongue weight for the hitch? Should I move to an E4 at a higher weight? Any advice is appreciated.
Top guesses without seeing the truck and trailer. Send me a message on Instagram lets try and get it fixed 1. Over payload capacity/too heavy tongue weight 2. Wrong weight bars. Could be the are rated at 10k but only 800lbs bars. 3. The brochure of the from that manufacture lied to you and the tongue weight is not 900lbs its 1,200lbs. It happens. Dont be mad at us we dont sell Keystone products just in the great state of Pennsylvania....the keystone state
going to be upgrading to the E4 hitch ,do i need to load out my tow vehicle before installing the hitch or can i install as is. Some have suggested to load out the tow vehicle, but my issue is that we never take the same amount of gear with us. It all depends on where and for how long we are going for .Is there maybe a certain amount of weight we could load in the truck if that is the thing to do that would be sufficient for the installation.
We have seen where it fights the sway system installed with weight distribution. You can try running it on and off but most people I talked to say that they find it easier and more controllable without it on But at the end of the day the correct answer is to feel comfortable in the drivers seat
If they are going to lift my trailer off the truck and push it back far enough to get there truck backed into the trailer and hook up to it....they deserve it. Besides someone going through that effort will probably have bolt cutters with them
My old F150 had a built in brake controller, my new one doesn't but I got an aftermarket, which has better features and you can set it for I think up to 10 different trailers, they work the same way, you can set it in a big empty parking lot, you should have room to speed up to about 15 mph, then set your trailer brakes about 8 or 9, then, do some hard breaking, then see , if it stops smooth you got it right, if it doesn't, then take it down or up, down if it brakes too hard, up if it takes too long to stop, basically you shouldn't feel like you have a trailer when braking, of course it's going to take longer to stop but use common sense you shouldn't travel more than a few extra feet if you do then something is not right. For perspective, I am pulling a 33 ft travel trailer that weighs about 7000 pounds, the only time my truck even feels like I am pulling it is when going uphill on a steep grade, that said, I don't go faster than 55 mph, even with the anti sway bars, a few times wind hit me hard enough to make it scary but at 55 a light tap on the brakes corrects the sway immediately. At 60 or over, correcting that gets a lot harder quick...if you see others driving faster with those trailers just let them pass you and wish them luck. Fifth wheel trailers are way more stable but still it pays to be careful and you still have to stop all that weight. Could I go faster with my truck? Absolutely, it doesn't even feel like I have a trailer, but good sense prevails.
Saw a video recently, where the driver hitched the rig by himself. Since he didn't have anyone checking the lights for him, he turned on the 4-way flashers: fig'd that he could verify the brake lights, the left turn, the right turn and the marker lights were operating correctly. Does this sound like it would work? Any problems doing this? Y'all Be Safe!
How much room do you need on the tongue frame to mount this system. I am wanting to purchase the E4 for a V nose car hauler. The tongue frame looks too short to be able to mount this sytem.
Lol kick ass video. Just have one question [Monster] How does this equalizer work with a truck with a 6" lift? I'm seeing horror stories of pulling an RV with a lifted truck.[Monster] Now it's not like I'm gonna be towing every day or week and probably not goin cross country with it(yet) '08 Ford F250 6.4L. Also, can you do a video of how to set up and install the equalizer onto trailer and truck. Thanks [Monster]
He is correct. We just need to make sure we have a long enough shank to set it up correctly. We have set up a deuce and a half so I am sure we can set yours up
The trailer has to be level, that truck might not squat a lot but a couple of inches still make a significant difference, and why make it work harder than it has to? My truck (2018 F-150) only squats about 3 inches with my trailer but I would not pull it without wd bars. Besides if you get in an accident they will look for anything to pin it on you as the one at fault, don't give them any reason to blame you.

In my experience I find the system fights the sway control. Try running it on some customer with newer trucks like it better and I have been told they have updated it But just telling what works best with me and my experiences. -JR
We did not but Grocery Outlet has donated a case of BANG energy drinks so they are going to be the unofficial official sponsor of energy drinks for JR videos at this point
@@therealjr1715 Interesting...What if you were towing a trailer without an equalizer hitch, then would you recommend using the Trailer Sway Control (TSC)? Classic video btw!! Thank you:)
@@seagangstab2637 for some reason it fights each other and makes it feel like a "shimmy" back and forth as the truck will keep grabbing the back brakes either side every time the wind blows. The ford documentation makes it seem that it does nothing until its really swaying but that is incorrect. I can fell it in heavy winds even with no trailer grabbing the brakes.
have a weight distribution question for you guys. My new (2018) trailer has gone through 2 axles in 3 years taking a set of tires with it each time. only 1500 miles on the trailer. Dealer seems to think I'm putting too much on the weight bars causing the front axle on the trailer to unload and overloading the rear. Do you think there is any truth to this ? I put a level on the trailer floor while hooked up and it's definitely not high in the front. I think they're giving me the run around to avoid a warranty claim., but i thought i'd check with someone who knows what they're doing first :) any help would be appreicated.
That is a possibility and we have seen this even if the trailer looks level Without having the trailer and truck here where I can weigh it on multiple points that would be hard to say what is doing this However on the drivers side of you trailer there is a sticker that show what the axles are rated at individually. You could call around to 18 wheeler truck weigh stations, lots of truck stops have them. Need to find one that shows each axle individually so you can see what the weight is of each axle. This documentation will show you the truth of where the weight is going -JR
@@KeystoneRVCenter I didn't think for even a minute that overloading weight bars a thing. I always though you just get them as tight as possible :( ... Well my Ford F-150 does not have all that . thanks I appreciate the help.
Hey we tried
Did Monster ever decide to sponsor you?

If you cross them then how else would it be
Why would you turn off trailer sway control on the truck?
In my experience I find the system fights the sway control. Try running it on some customer with newer trucks like it better and I have been told they have updated it
But just telling what works best with me and my experiences.
-JR
in many states it is mandatory to cross the chains
Do not know....not a lawyer....just do it does not take any extra time
i’m wondering if they ever got sponsored by monster
Nope, still waiting on that sponsorship!
We did not but Grocery Outlet has donated a case of BANG energy drinks so they are going to be the unofficial official sponsor of energy drinks for JR videos at this point
Hey, The 1980's called. They want their mullet back !

@@KeystoneRVCenter Mark let me find a charity and we will do a go fund me or something
Great video but I'm a bit confused, do you still need a sway control ball mount?
John, no, this system has sway control integrated into it.
@@KeystoneRVCenter Thanks for replying. And that's great news, because this is what I have.
Absolutely! Not a problem!
Just gonna send it....
Why aren't you using the P3 brake controller?
Most of our customers will not use the extra features on it but if you want it we can always adjust the price to get you what you want
I have the same hitch. I lift it, Get one bar in ....the other side is very difficult... What's wrong?
probably not level, just keep raising it and it will eventually come up to match the other side
Probably just not even....if the truck and trailer is not straight it is going be more difficult with one side than the other
Can you explain why you turned off the Ford trailer sway control?
From my personal experience towing with the Ford trucks and an equalizer hitch I have seen smoother towing with it off
@@therealjr1715 Interesting...What if you were towing a trailer without an equalizer hitch, then would you recommend using the Trailer Sway Control (TSC)?
I think they're giving me the run around to avoid a warranty claim., but i thought i'd check with someone who knows what they're doing first :)
any help would be appreicated.
That is a possibility and we have seen this even if the trailer looks level
Without having the trailer and truck here where I can weigh it on multiple points that would be hard to say what is doing this
However on the drivers side of you trailer there is a sticker that show what the axles are rated at individually. You could call around to 18 wheeler truck weigh stations, lots of truck stops have them. Need to find one that shows each axle individually so you can see what the weight is of each axle.
This documentation will show you the truth of where the weight is going

I didn't think for even a minute that overloading weight bars a thing. I always though you just get them as tight as possible :( ... Learned something new today.
trailer has a gvw of 7000# with 2 3500# axles. i'll be calling around to find somewhere that can weight both axles on their own instead of combined. thanks for the great advice.
I've learned more watching 2 hours of your viedos than i have in the last 2 years. I'm realizing just how much the sales guy didn't tell me.
Your videos are very entertaining, and super informitave at the same time. I love it. keep the awesome videos coming
If I was Monster I’d never sponsor this guy
See this guy gets it. But I have decided to try and get sponsored from by Black Rifle Coffee so we get better coffee for the dealership

it is illegal to run your chains not crossed
Have had too many different answers to this. My response is it is not illegal to run your chains crossed.

Great video. But would definitely not want that annoying truck. Looks good though
Why is the wife the passenger? Shouldn't she be driving the truck.
GREAT JOB!! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
