  • The City of Cape Town plans to spend R230-million over the next three years to remove homeless people who have been calling its streets home illegally. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says more shelters will be renovated to provide what he calls ‘dignified transitional spaces’ during relocation plans. eNCA’s Ayesha Ismail has more. #dstv403

They choose to live on the streets!! COCT has tried several times to help them with safe spaces and they refuse! They do not like the rules and regulations. I know a guy we tried to help and got him into a shelter...they tried to help him with work and he did not want to do it. Stop always blaming COCT of human rights violations. Nobody has the right to occupy a space they do not own or pay for. It is by choice they live on the street. Let's talk again when they start camping outside your home...they pee and poo anywhere and they come onto your property and use the water you pay for. That is not a way to live but that is what they choose!

Putting these people in homeless shelters close to the city center is not such a brilliant idea, as they will simply walk around during daytime and beg at every street corner. A much bigger effort is needed

The main problem is that most homeless people are addicted to drugs. It doesn't matter where place an addict, they will sell everything around them till they are homeless again.

Ugandans and others have homes to go to. But Cape Townians should be given accommodation ,because they don't have other homes anywhere else except for SA. People must stop their selfishness and greediness. Any empty spots or land, Cape Townians first and SACANS should be prioritized as demand. There's no other way around this because millions of SA nation are homeless, landless and jobless. What kind of government that neglect the duty of taking care of its own citizens, but jump to take care of other countries governments duty . SA Government should take this seriously and fix the long ignored cry of SACANS, due to SA government's very obedient to other countries' governments , that is extremely nonsense. Government must send these people back to their homelands. We have too much in our plates and our tax is not enough for everyone.

giving homeless people housing is not the only solution! imagine living in the streets for years - the psychological trauma, ostracization etc of being homeless! they need psychological support + addiction to fully support them! also de sensitise workers that work in the shelters to be more sympathetic also understanding the sytemic and historical aspects that lead to homelessness in cape town. also eNCA should have done more research into such an issue, disappointing how they speak about (and highlight) their refusal move to homeless shelters without consulting actual experts who work with homeless people everyday.

Why were they allowed to squatt in CBD anyway. Don't they know CBD is a place of business and tourists. They should have squatted in empty unappealing places for temporal stay just like other people who don't homes.
