@@AdamDuffArt Lol first thing I noticed. Someones going deep on the production level here. I love it though, no reason why artists should phone in any part of their presentation. I think it feels more natural when we cut prior to the direction change. I wonder if you could get a B cam and cut to that every once in a while. Regardless, epic production my man.
The image you’re comparing to Frazetta is by Gerald Brom, a very well known and respected fantasy illustrator who has obviously been influenced by Frazetta. He painted that in oils for the original D2 box art. Unfortunately, marketing ruined the piece by adding photoshop filters all over it in the hopes of giving it "pop" on the shelves. What you see in the book is the untouched original. He also came onsite to Blizzard during the development of D3 and worked on several oil paintings that are also included in the book.
-they got him to do a repaint for the Diablo II remaster something like a couple decades after the fact. I first saw his stuff via the Magic card "Desolation Angel" and got super pumped back in high school. Funny how seeds like that grow into life changing shit. I got to meet him at an illustrator award thing a few years ago. Super friendly guy with practical wisdom. Frazetta feels like an easy grab, but I'd also check out John Jude Palencar
I stumbled upon this video just looking for something relaxing to fall asleep to, but I have to say the production level and attention to detail in both the art you're showing and the way you present it in your video is inspiring. Thank you!
I played diablo 2 for HOURS when I was a kid. I dont think about it very often nowadays but I think the amazing music and atmosphere definitely rubbed off on me when it comes to my interests and stuff. thanks for the video adam, made me go watch the Diablo 4 trailer I hadn't seen and now I'm excited! it really looks like theyre going back to that darker, nastier style.
Love your videos man, keep them coming! Also I can't help but point out something interesting I found in an interview for the making of Diablo III. Diablo is male but in three because Leah was the new bodily vessel Diablo would manifest himself into, it carries that womanly figure over into his monstrous form for the third game. The designers even paid this much attention to this small detail it's amazing.
The art that was in the manual of Diablo II and the original bigbox release of Starcraft inspired me so much as a kid, later on I have even bought the first WoW artbook even tho I have never played the game more than giving it a slight try, but thats all due to the amazing art!
Great Video. I loved the new camera movement. It took me half the video to realized the background was slowly moving from side to side. Well done and I am really enjoying these art book reviews.
You should do a review on: - Mad Max Fury Road, - Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities, - Adventure Time: The Art of OOO, - Dragon Age Inquisition - Yoh Yoshinari Art books - Yoshitaka Amano Ilustrations books
@@JesseTurner I love it when I found it, if you do a review on it buy Wilton Silver Color Mist, it's a grey spray can use to color cakes, so you can go to Valhala
Well, in Diablo 3 Diablo himself is physically female because he spawned from Leah, but his true form is the big muscle hulk masculine form. If we see him in Diablo 4 he will probably return to his muscle hulk form considering he died in his Leah form. So unless he is summoned throgh another womans body he won't look like that again. It's a cool concept for demons and really all things that involve summoning and blood. Having the owner of the blood used effect the visuals of whatever it is being used to summon is a great bit of dark flavour.
Damn Adam, haven't watched your videos in a while.Tho I've bookmarked everything.Your setup is amazing with the camera making me think I'm drunk xD, anyways it's amazing! 13:25 same, same love that guy. Also he was Davy Jones, another amazing role from him
I find theese kind of videos really insightful. Have you ever considered covering some of the more well known japanese video game art books? Some that I would recommend would be: 1. Dragon Quest Illustrations: 30th Anniversary Edition 2. The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy 3. The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV 4. Santa Lilio Sangre 5. Art of Mana 6. Shigenori Soejima & P-Studio Art Unit: Art Works 2 7. Mega Man X: Official Complete Works 8. Okami Official Complete Works
I play FFXIV and true end game is glam/fashion! Love Diablo. I didn't play 1 and 2 because I was too young but I watched my siblings play and it has made a huge positive impression in my tastes of art and games!
Could you give advice to art students on what to do when your uninspired with the work given in school or work? Example : I do concept art character design 99% of the time but have to do 10 lifeless desert environments which is proving to be tough. (My professor wants splash art some reason...)
Awesome video - the moving camera is also very cool and gives the whole dark Diablo ambiente a mysterious vibe to it. And thank you for the art / technique input!
I never got into the Diablo games, mostly because I was too poor to own a PC back when Diablo was released, but that new Baldur's Gate by Larian Studios ... can't wait to play that!
Thanks for sharing this! It's been on my list to pick up, but seeing it presented like this beforehand really helps with the decision-making. Smart move with the affiliate link !
Non Gamers - "RPG's are just fashion shows... so lame..." Gamer's - "Yeah, that's the point... fashion game is end game!" Wow tier armor sets have a multitude of issues, most of which are caused by the sheer volume of armor that was needed to be designed. Each class gets an armor set serving as the base (Dungeon set) then a slightly spruced up version of that (Dungeon .5) And then a raid set serving as the "Iconic" look for the class. Oh and then they also had unique PvP armor, which originally was also faction specific. And then they gotta do all of that again with each new tier. I played through tier 11, and at that point so many of the tier armors looked the same. So much so it became harder and harder to tell which class was which. I remember getting my Paladin tier 10 armor and could only think, "I feel like I'm going through an identity crisis... Do I still pray to the light? Elune? Earth Spirits?" But again I think that is just the nature of having so so many armors to make, while trying not to use too many design elements from previous tiers or the teacher will know you cheated... I do like the way you looked at it, Design the villager first and work your way up. Which is known as iterative design. You can also do the reverse, which I do believe was the approach used for WoW during Burning Crusade (sans Sunwell gear of course.) As well as for Wraith of the Lich King (Aside from the Grand Tournament tier 9 armor.) They would start with what they wanted a final design to look like (out of the dozen or so iterative concepts) Then strip away pieces and components to create the lesser armor sets. I loved the tier 4 and 5 armors mostly, though some of the Tier 10 was amazing. Tier 11 was almost all ugly... and I regret not quitting WoW on the High Note that was Defeating the Lich King...
Extremely interesting person talking about extremely interesting book and theme, while setting up this extremely interesting moving camera and other stuff. Could be something more extreme and interesting?! :D Damn i love your channel, thank you for new video and inspiration Adam.
Have you ever heard of Disciples at all? I recommend checking out that game if you have steam, the second one if you can, i think you'll be really really be enchanted by the art and music in that game. ;)
Loved this video, was looking for some decent coverage of the book and this really hit the spot - so refreshing to have an art book review from an actual artist who knows what they're talking about. Don't know if after 10 months you're likely to reply to this, but is the book worth buying if I have both the D3 and expansion art books from the collector editions, or is the majority of the art from those books reused here? Thanks!
You need to get some final fantasy art books :) I have 1 but it reminds me of this book. More traditional style bc mine is Amano but there are multiple designers 7 - 15.
I think diablo 3 has too many syles in it, like they try to mix many different styles. Frequently it doesn't feel connected, it looks like random stuff from many styles thrown in to making something, it's still much better than wow which is even more kitschy. I'm not waying Diablo 3 art is bad, it just needs a more unified style like diablo 1 for example
I’m good at nothing lol I trained kickboxing for years didn’t take me anywhere, freelanced as a 3d character artist for a while and then suddenly stopped, I even made music for years... but i always give up on my dreams sadly don’t know what’s wrong with me
your camera movement is very cool but it is causing me motion sickness... 😅 the background moving and you sitting still is really making nauseous. I know this reaction is really strong with me but some other might feel it too if they are sensitive for it. Love the video tho
Great looking art, terrible gaming company. Game was such a disappointment, compared to it's predecessors, not only game wise, but also ART wise. TBH Diablo 1 and 2 concept art are still among the better, unfiltered and pure classic dark fantasy.
Bit of a shame, not knowing who BROM is, a legend like him does commissions for Blizzard and he does them in his own style not in Blizzard's style. I like your book reviews but it shows when you have not researched your material.
No, these designs are made by professionals, Blizzard is just there to make profit off of employers work. Before they've had other objectives besides profit, now it's just too big to fail.
