I have been sanding for 35 years.... And I kind of like it.... Maybe because everyone hates it... Automotive restoration has been pretty good to me.... Confessions of a professional sander.
Can I say.. I really enjoy the history of your craft and how you got to where and how you got to were you are . Humility is lost on a lot of folks these days, really enjoy your videos
You are working on a beautiful Rosa mandolin an it needs the best work you can do. I wish I had a Rosa mandolin but I can not play an I am 73 starting to look at 74 yrs. A Rosa mandolin is a very beautiful instrument.
Jerry, beautiful work ,as always and artistry in both sound and aesthetics. And now, it's time for you to build one for yourself. Whether or not we see it doesn't matter. Don't let that window close. It will always close faster than you want it to. Merry Christmas to Mr. and Mrs. Rosa, Caleb, Melissa, and all the families around you.
Outstanding job, very well done! I handmade a few object from ebony wood without any machinery and I know how hard sanding is. It takes a lot of strength and stamina to do this precisely over weeks and months. I have a lot of respect for people, who do their work with such devotion.
Years ago I used to be a trim carpenter and I would do fancy trim and install very expensive panels of fine woods on wall then trim them out. Here is a simple trick we used to avoid splitting wood when driving in finish nails: turn the nail with the point up and the nail head against any solid surface. Next tap the point on the nail using your hammer using only enough force to blunt the nail's point but not so much force that the nail bends. Now the nail will easily drive into wood acting as a punch rather than as a wedge like a sharply pointed nail. Use this trick when driving those two finish nails into the neck before installing the fret board. To really a oid splitting the wood and to make thin finish nails drive into hard wood without splitting we kept a bar of Ivory Soap in a pouch of our nail aprons so we could rub the nails against the bar of soap to lubricate them before driving them into very hard, very expensive woods. One last tip I use when I paint landscape on site (Plein air painting). Use your pocket knife to cut two bars of Ivory Soap (only use this brand because of it's lye content and oils) into small shavings. Put the shavings into a fair size jar then add enough water to cover all the soap shaving by about an inch of water. Put the lid on the jar, give the jar a few good hard shakes then let the jar sit for a few days. The soap will resolve into a thick slurry that's about as viscous as cake icing., Pour off any excess water then use a stick, spoon, or paint brush handle to mix the slurry up so it's consistency is even. You now have the very best brush cleaning method on earth. Lightly jab each brush into the slurry to get soap all up in the bristles. Even a brush that was forgotten and paint has dried in the bristles and they seem to be a big gob of a ruined brush... Not at all. Punch that brush into the slurry and allow it to stay in the soap for 2 or 3 weeks. The brunch will be like new or at least much improved but in need of more soaking in the soap time. Hope this helps. I enjoy your videos.
Even with all of your health problems, you are a blessed man, Jerry. Merry Christmas to you all! Creating such beautiful instruments that will last for generations is a very wonderful thing. Take care, be safe, and I hope 2021 brings joy to you and yours. Thank you so much for the videos.
I’m certain that these Rosa mandolins will be treasured masterpieces for generations. This one will be renowned for its beauty and sound. I’m truly amazed. Thanks for sharing your journey with the world.
Wow!! She sure is pretty. I would have told the customer that I accidentally sat on it. lol You're a master craftsman, Jerry. I very much enjoyed watching the build.
Jerry, not only do you build the best looking Mandolin- they definitely are the best sounding as well! I enjoy your videos so much! I pray that your hands can continue with your work- one day I would love to own one of your masterpieces!
That back is just exceptional. What a beautiful instrument. It was great to hear it on the last concert. That is going to be spectacular in about 10 years and just get better after that. A Merry Christmas to everyone at RSW! A better year for all of us coming up, I hope, and lots more great videos from Jerry and Caleb. Best wishes to all watching as well.
As always... What a pleasure it is for us to watch a Master Craftsman (Artist...) create a work of art! It kinda blurs the line between Art and Science. A guy concerned about the Truth really; leaving the mistakes in the video; not compromising the process of creating an "imperfect" instrument. Hey, a one thousandth mistake is impossible to find, so in some respects... It is perfect! Thanks Jerry! "Thousands of years later." LOL
Thats gotta be the nicest one yet. From what I see it is. Sounds nice and loud. And the flames on the back are outstanding some of the best ones I ever seen. They look like heavenly clouds.
Hi Jerry; I hope you and your family had a very merry Christmas. That is one beautiful instrument as usual. Sorry to hear your hands are giving you so much trouble. May the blessings of the lord be upon you and your family.
Wonderful job Jerry, the grain and stain is beautiful and worth all the hours you put into it. These unique high quality instruments are your legacy for decades to come. I wish I could leave something behind like that! Thanks for posting.
Wow! I’ve said it before, Jerry, but I can only imagine the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from building an amazing instrument with your own two hands. Just awesome.
I can't even wrap my head around the kind of skills you have. I've been playing guitar for 35 years now.. been a carpenter since just after high School.. I've been doing fine hardwood finish carpentry for 15 years!! You are at the level of craftsmanship that I bet less than 100 people alive on the planet can achieve!! I did start out with your clickbait best mandolin ever made by human. And I was pretty damn impressed!!! And now watching this series I think you have a good shot!! 👍👍🤔 Up next is the chocolate??
Mercy! That one fine mandolin. Loved watching the process of building this beauty. The owner will be very happy. Christmas blessings to all there at the workshop and ranch.
That's a nice Christmas present to all of us and i agree EVERY instrument just seems to get better and you can always tell a Rosa instrument it's built with care and too exacting standards, Another masterpiece completed and off to a happy customer.
Thanks for these videos. I have enjoyed the whole series from the block of big leaf maple to the installation of your label. Sounds great and looks like a masterpiece.
I have seen many Mandolins, But you hit this out of the park. This is the best and finest Mandolin I have seen anyone Build. Great Job !!! Happy New Year !!!!! GOD Bless Everyone !!!!! James and Judy Hopper Joshua 24:15,, Romans 6:23..
As the saying goes "The devil is in the details" or as they told us in the Army, "Attention to detail"... goes with saying. If you don't care, no one else will. A beautiful build Jerry. One to be proud of. Merry Christmas to RSW.
It’s very mellow... which to me sounds WAY better. You wait 20 years for an instrument to do that! That puppy is doing it “out of the box” Great Work Jerry!
What a thoroughly enjoyable series of videos. Thank you Jerry. That is a beautiful instrument and your pride in your work shines through, rightly so. One day I may be able to afford a custom-made guitar, and I know who I'm going to ask to build it. Stay safe.
Hoping the arthritis gets better. It would be a tragedy to have you forced into stopping building the beautiful instruments I've seen. My only regret is I didn't find you years earlier than I did. A true artist when it comes to building stringed instruments. Note: I just got a ES335 copy for $170 New. I did some rudimentary set up work on it, it sounds better than I hoped it would. Still have a slight buzz at the 16th fret, but I'm gradually taking it down. You've taught me much, in such a short space of time. I want to say thank you, for sharing your talents & knowledge. Many blessings to you & Caleb & the family.
nice job man I learned something today the sanding in between the pieces and how to set tge fret board. thinking about making myself one like yours Jerry I'm sure yours is a master piece t 👍
I've really enjoyed watching you build this mandolin. A few years ago the pain in my fingers was so bad I couldn't strum my guitar, but my daughter's father-in-law, an Australian farmer, suggested I take GOPO, a Danish supplement made from rose hips and I have never looked back. Even if the supplement doesn't work for you (you'll know after about a month) at least you'll have had plenty of vitamin C. If you can get it in the USA, give it a try - my fingers feel the way they did when I was 20 (I'm 66). Merry Christmas, Jerry, from the UK.
Beautiful work, both the instrument and the making of. Like the sense of humor. I’d love to build one F-4-Style or get one where I do the sanding(!) and the finish as would do a french polish.
As always, you do gosh darned good work, Jerry! Now go have a Christmas beer! Best of holiday wishes to you, Caleb, Melissa, and everyone else at the RSW homestead.
@@INDYOSKARS Seriously, dude? Obviously you are new here and haven't paid much attention that I sign off with that on just about every comment to Jerry. I know that Jerry doesn't drink. Dull as a butter knife ...
Adam on the Tested channel has a really efficient sanding station. The belts are about 2" to 3" wide. Seems to work great. He's done several wood projects during the pandemic. The quilted maple mandolin is gorgeous. Any player would be thrilled to have it.
Merry Christmas Jerry and everyone over at the Rosa compound! I stopped buying run of the mill guitars a while back. Not that a standard Martin or Gibson is bad but their Custom Shop stuff is just so much better to me. It’s the absolute attention to detail that I happily pay for. If I were to ever buy a mandolin or acoustic guitar, I’d be buying it from you, Jerry. That day may be coming sooner than later.
the sides and the back of that mandolin is the prettiest paint job/figuring of any stringed instrument I've seen.

Oh, yeah! Wow, body work. Talk about never ending sanding! Oi!

Looks like a piece of heaven is in this Mandoline. The back of it looks like The heaven....
It's simply heavenly. Well done Sir.
