Most of the time , I "free hand" sharpen , but still have the "old" Lansky sharpener and use a sine block to set the angle. Thanks for your comparison video Mr. Immler . I admire the protractor application on your cell phone.

@@FelixImmler Hey Felix, if you want some VERY strong free magnets to secure the blades better. Get them out of broken computer hard drives, laptop and desktop.
If you haven't got any a computer shop would probably give you some.
The desktop size ones would fit in that space very well and improve the grip by about 50% 👍
Thank you for your excellent videos 🍺 My favourite SAK is my slide lock Hercules 😆
I've got two strips of luminous tape on it, so it's not lost while camping.

I have a box of knife sharpening... Things, that I have collected over the span of my 61 years on the big blue marble. It measures about 1.5 by 1 by .5 feet, and it contains just about everything you can imagine. From lots of stones of varying grits to fixturing devices like you are reviewing here. Still and all, anytime I need to sharpen something, I invariably go to my soft Arkansas stone, followed by a hard Arkansas stone, followed by a leather strop. A set that I bought in the late 1970's when I was in high school. The only things that have changed in over 50 years are; A. I'm more inclined to use water over oil and B. I have discovered that adding buffing compound to the leather strop makes a HUGE difference. I hone by hand because knives and axes don't require exact angles to function the way I need them to, the way cutting tools used in machines do.

Well done video Felix! I have been using the KME system for several years. I also have their axe/hatchet convexing attachment and the Japanese water stone set. I believe my business should go to the originator of the design, not the company that copies and cheapens the design. All of the shortfalls you pointed out with that 2nd Chinese sharpener do not exist on the KME. I can get an accurate angle measurement because the KME jaws are free floating and the blade is clamped in the middle of the jaws. That cheap Chinese unit you have looks like the KME but doesn't actually function like the KME. I'm sure it is the same for the TSPROF and the EdgePro. The copies are never as good as the original. You proved that when you compared your SAK to the copies. My problem with the Chinese versions is that not only are they cheaply and often carelessly made, the Chinese manufacturing firms only seem to be able to copy things. They don't seem to be able to innovate anything. I will stick with the originals. KME also warrants their sharpener for life, and they honor that warranty! Thanks Felix!

I agree, have the KME with convexing too (and I just ordered the pen knife clamp for swiss army), it is expensive but I agree the $ should go to original designers if possible. The big downside to KME aside from price though is avaiablilty, I had to have mine imported for eg.

I learned how to do hand sharpening and spent my money on diamond plates and a honing strop. They work great and quickly for knives, chisels, and plane blades. Diamond sharpening plates work very well on my Victorinox stainless steel blades, too.
For knives, however, I think your Kadet system works very well for establishing a consistent angle and sharpening the blade prior to stropping, especially with the diamond plates.
This is a good tool review. Thanks for the video.

The Ruixin 5, your second version, comes from the factory with a fault in the clamping part. The half round piece in the clamp is too big and don't comes flat.
If you file the half round part in the clamp so the flat side rests in the groove, the angle is really perfect.
I did this with my Ruixin and if I turn the knife the angle of the stones is within 1/10 of a degree.
That makes this unit really perfect, even for small knives.

I have been using the smith's 10$ pocket sharpener for a year now and it has been working great I had kitchen knife that couldn't cut butter and it made it razor sharp in 1-2 mins. if 10$ can keep my knives sharp for a year then I call that a great investment rather than wasting money on buying new knives.

hello Felix ... With Sharpening systems like that .. there are 2 Points to look at and make a difference ... first point the Base System ... with Knife holder , angle system and "stone" Holder ... there You have to look what You can Work with and how much compatible the Stone holder is ( Size and form of the Stones .. ) and then Look at the Price and take with what You can Live ... The second Point is then more importent .. the Stones ... if the Stone holder is compatible to a lot of Stones on the market, then You can invest the spared money from the base in good Quality stones ... i Use a Ruixin Pro RX008 System with Stones from Bacher wich have also Leather straps for this system and DMT Diamond paste on the Leather .. also some Diamond Stones for havy duty Knife sharping jobs ... So in my opinion it is not really a Question of the Prise of the base .. its more a Question of the Quality of the stones wich You use with the system

One great point of mechanical fixed type sharpening tools is it provides the ability to copy the factory angle. They also provide removing less metal from the blade too. The down side of using them is the time it takes getting the angle setup correctly. Another problem is none I, know of can sharpen small penknives. The Russian made model you have looks to be the best one so far; but, is even more complicated to setup as well. However; if you are a knife collector and have rare and expensive knives and have good mechanical skills this might worth buying. Swiss Army knives and Swiza Swiss knives are so easy to sharpen spending that much for a sharpening tool is a little extreme. 🎁🎄😊

The question I keep going back to is, "how sharp does a knife have to be to accomplish with ease cutting tasks in camp and when food preparation and, standard bushcraft camp tasks? I have several Japanese water stones from course (150 grit) to ultra-fine (6000 grit). I also have a sharpening tool that sharpens by pulling the knive thru the device. Also, I have a 3-grit (course, medium, and fine) on a sharpening steel made by Buck knives. All three sharpening systems (Japanese stones, Buck 3-grit steel, and the easy-pull device) work fine and produce sharp knife edges. Of course, the Japanese water stones get the sharpest knife edges, but it is a lot of work and its messy. My go-to system is the Buck 3-grit sharpening steel because it is easy to use and gives me the hands-on 'feel' that I am in control. I have avoided puchasing a sharpening device that you are using in this video because the only advantage is being able to accurately control the edge angle. precisely and these mechanical systems are expensive. So, the trade offs are ease of use, cost, time, messiness, and precise/less precise angle control. Under normal conditions, I am okay with the Buck 3-grit steel, but if I want super-sharp knives, I use the water stones. But, by and large, the ease of use of the 3-grit Buck steel is fine with me and I can accomplish most tasks easily. So, my final question is, "why do I need super-sharp knives?" Is perfect the enemy of good enough?

I use the Lansky system and my knives are razor sharp… my brother found out just how sharp my SAK was last week while we were in Aspen. His boy needed a hole cut into an old belt so he could wear it and I was going to cut it for him. My brother being the "man" thought he needed to do it so I wouldn’t stab his son. What happens? He slices right through the leather belt AND his finger like butter … he sliced his finger to the bone… I felt bad for him but at the same time had to chuckle because he thought I would have a dull knife. I took the knife back. I had to cut another hole since the hole he cut wasn’t far enough back for Tracetin to use. I didn’t cut myself … lol

To me, the clamp that holds the blade is supreme importance. Some blades are flat ground, some are hollow and some are saber ground and I’m sure there are others. The ability of the clamp that holds the blade to conform to various blade shapes and grinds is very difficult to find and that is what affects the actual angle of the very apex. If the clamp allows any slip in how it holds the blade, it will throw off the angle at the apex to a massive degree. I would have to really look at the clamp of the Russian sharpener to see if it can accommodate the types of clamping power it has. Granted, a knife can be sharp if one side is 20 degrees and the other is 15 degrees, as long as the type angles intersect at the apex. Like how a chisel is sharp, for example.

    Fabio.

A load of nonsense and complete waste of money. Sharpening is an easy skill to master, if you don’t become hyper-obsessive and overthink it - hallmarks of our age, I’m afraid.

Beside the price there is another significant downside of that sharpener - it comes from Russia - the country which tries to destroy Europe, and finally the money you pay will be spend for terrorism and destruction. And that is pity because the sharpener looks good.

@@szhyla Perhaps if the 'West' hadn't tried to drive a wedge between Ukraine and Russia that might never have happened. We could go a long way with the blame game. Still not sure whether this is in any way relevant to the subject at hand - knife sharpeners.

    • @szhyla
      @szhyla 3 года назад

@@paulreeves8251 there is no blame games or wedges of the "West". There is a war - Russian aggression against Ukraine. Just to remind it is Russia who occupies territories of Ukraine (Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Lugansk districts at the east) and not vice versa. However, here in Ukraine, nobody blames Russia in what they did, because we understand that aggression against neighbors is a nature of Russia. They will never stop. They will try to conquer everything around as long as they have chance and money for that. An this fact comes us to the point that any goods, wither it is natural gas or knife sharpener, bought in Russia supports Russian aggression no matter against whoever they can. Today it is Ukraine, tomorrow it will be Poland, Hungary, Slovak or Austria - depends on how long they will have money.
