  • Hello! Working on a custom desk for a client and they wanted a secret drawer. So, I had to figure out a convenient mechanism for opening it. This is what I came up with! Thanks for watching!

    You probably want to attached a metal corner bracket to the outside corner of your desk so the wood does not get torn up over use and add a piece of metal to level that it rubs against. Creative idea!

    That's very ingenious. I like that you couldn't realistically open the secret draw by accident.

    Fun project but not sure how practical it would be. Imagine the cops having a search warrant and finding this desk. It would be apparent that there are potential spaces that would not be accessible by just pulling the center drawer. In reality, they might start breaking things to answer any questions that they may have.

    absolutely love this, where would a beginner start to do home projects like this?

    • @TenonsTenors
      @TenonsTenors  Год назад

      If you are a complete beginner to wood working I'd start by learning how to use basic hand tools and then try to build something simple, like a stool or a box. As you get used to more advanced techniques you'll be able to make more complicated things, like my desk!

    Dude! Wicked Brilliant! . . . can you make the rotating closet shelves from the Kurt Russel/Goldie Hawn movie _"Overboard"_ . . . its the one he builds on her Yacht . . . I think you might be the only person I've seen who could actually build this (the one in the movie is just a gimmick/prop).

      @TenonsTenors  Год назад

      You probably wouldn't love the cost. This desk was a custom order made of all ash with mostly hand tools with the exception of the lathe for the legs. For materials and time I had to charge about $2,000.

    Will there be panels underneath to disguise all but the actuator switch?

    • @TenonsTenors
      @TenonsTenors  3 года назад +2

      I was thinking about installing dust panels but decided not for two reasons. One, the client had a very small budget and I already went way below my hourly rate to finish it. And, two, if the springs break, or something else guess wrong with the mechanism I want to be able to access the under side easily.

    • @domward8352
      @domward8352 3 года назад +1

      @@TenonsTenors I see your logic. It's unlikely that anyone would look underneath the desk anyway.

  • @johnelwer3633

    I feel like the other side needs one too.

    • @TenonsTenors
      @TenonsTenors  3 года назад

      I was thinking about that but the mechanism would have been even more complicated to keep both drawers from opening at the same time.

  • @thijspluis9998
    @thijspluis9998 Год назад

    why is the wooden pin and the block angles verry agressively

    • @TenonsTenors
      @TenonsTenors  Год назад

      Not exactly sure what you're asking, but the two drawers are parallel, so the mechanism I developed was at right angles to both drawers. Perhaps there might have been a way to angle certain mechanisms in a way that made operation smoother, but I was not thinking about that at the time. This is what I came up with! Thanks for watching!

    one rule woodworkers have forgotten today
    if your making secret compartment furniture for someone
    DONT SHOW IT TO THE PUBLIC
    what is wrong with people these days
    its ment to be a private secret for the customer
    nice work though iv been trying to figger out ho to do this myself
    just stop showing us someone else's secrets that should be theirs only on how the draws work
