Fixing the DREADED Stator Wire Oil Leak and addressing the Triple Sprocket Issue on the Night Rod

- In this video I finally get around to fixing the oil leak coming from the poorly
designed stator wire grommet, and while the cover is removed I decided to check the notorious triple sprocket bolt that has been the Achilles Heel of the Revolution engine platform in some cases. If you own a V-Rod, do yourself a favor and remove this bolt and make sure to put some thread locker on it for some peace of mind! I also ended up fabricating a mud flap and repairing some broken wire loom since the last upload and briefly showed those as well.
I have a feeling this triple sprocket bolt issue originated from custom builders. Probably some shops confused 17 ft lbs with 17 inch lbs and just snugged up the bolt finger/hand tight. If this was a real issue, any reputable maker like Harley would've issued a TSB or recall. The VROD was in production for 15 years.
Thanks for the video its awesome, my first vrod (2003) had trouble finding neutral but after I replaced the clutch it found neutral almost everytime easy not to mention the lighter lever pull just the slipper clutch for 07 up. Install is a bit of a pain but not that bad
Thanks! I put a slipper in mine after the engine blew last year, and my hand has thanked me ever since. I find the shifting to be worse once the oil gets close to having about 3500-4000 miles on it. As soon as I change the oil it stays buttery smooth for a long while after, but still has the typical HD clunkiness and occasional 2nd gear miss haha.
Same small drip from time to time, going to tackle mine soon,, thanks for sharing.
Happy Father’s Day. Just subscribed, keep on doing the VRod thing
very helpful thanks! be careful using that spray brake cleaner indoors, the fumes can cause brain damage
Your cats made a cameo appearance at 8:26.
LOL, I forgot about them being out there when I came back out to film that part...
Thanks for video on that part. I've seen others have that same problem with the triple sprocket bolt. What stand you use fir the bike? I've been looking at a couple from Harbor Freight to help with oil and filter changes. I own 2015 Vrod Muscle and Suzuki m109r. Both kinda hard to work on since they low to ground.
I use a black one I got from Rural King. It's pretty much identical to the Harbor Freight one and I've done just about everything with it
Great vid, when putting the cover back on, you say it’s like a magnet.. do yah just put it straight on apart from the holes obviously lol .. and what was the torque spec
Yep, just as straight as you can and take it slow. There's a torque sequence you want to follow, look that up in the manual. You can find a free copy online I think, that's what I use for everything.
Would be nice if you added the torque specs for installing bolts.
I think I might have mentioned it, but the cover had a torque sequence to follow and I was too lazy to just take a picture and edit it in the video lol. This was also one of my earlier videos too, I was still kind of working my way through things and would probably be a lot more thorough if I had to go through it again. Thanks for the comment!
Help! I lost my wire marks in the process of putting the o rings on. Any advice to putting the wires back into the connector in the right order?
Since making this video, I've found that the order doesn't matter, the voltage regulator takes the 3 phase AC voltage and converts it to DC so you should be good to go!
@@GearheadPhil Thanks, GP! That’s a relief!
Thank you. How many miles on bike before this happened?
I'm pretty sure it leaked from the moment I got the bike at around 19k. I fixed it about a year ago, rebuilt the engine, and put about 3k miles on it since and it's still been fine!
What size o-rings?
I have no idea, I just got a universal o-ring kit from Amazon and found a few that fit the notches perfectly. Still working fine years later!
I've fixed mine atleast 3 times. Now I just keep the oil topped off.
Mine is still good to go. I used a ton of brake clean and absolutely filled it full of RTV though, on top of adding o-rings. The wiring through the grommet was saturated with oil and took a lot to clean it so that might be what's keeping it going for you. Best of luck with it!
Awesome video! I’m about to do this to my Rod myself! Question, do those cables that connect to the stator have to come off for the cover to come off?
Not necessarily, but it's not possible to install o-rings over the cabling without popping them out of the connector. I suppose you probably wouldn't need the o-rings if you used plenty of gasket maker, but it's honestly easy enough to do that I'd go for it again.
@@GearheadPhil Excellent, thanks! I’m just worried about that dreaded triple sprocket bolt backing itself out the most haha. Again, really great video!
@@rocket3me695 I appreciate the feedback! I actually just blew the engine last week, so I'm going to be heading over to Fitzgerald's to tear into it once I pull the engine. Hopefully I'll get some good video of that since there's not much documented in that regard. But yeah, it's honestly it's not a common issue, but it's easy enough to check. Mine was really tight when I did it.
My stator covers leaking now 🤔 I may have got the sequence wrong also I think I torqued one screw to tight u have a new gasket how did you blow your engine
@@thomasclarken2564 I did not need a new gasket, I just made sure to clean all surfaces and followed the manual for torque spec and sequence. I blew the engine about a year ago due to oil cavitation and rod knocked it. Totally my fault but it all worked out since it's a monster now lol
I took my vrod to my mechanic to retouch black paint of the engine, to paint the headlight cowl, and to change oil, my bike worked perfectly, as soon as I stopped it out of the mechanic it didnt start, ots tries to start but only sounds a loud repetitive spark, so I took it again to the mechanic....appearantly its not the battery....but he says its the stator....is he scamming me ?
Does it actually crank but not start? If it's just making a weird electrical clicking noise but not cranking it could be the one way sprog on the starter assembly, but I'm just spit balling without hearing it honestly
Hi,
what size onrings?
I actually don't remember the size. I bought a universal o-ring kit and found a few that worked. Check Amazon, it was only $11 or so.
how many miles has your vrod?
I think I have about 34k miles on it now. Bought it at 19k about 2 years ago.
I need that Harley bag on the left side under the seat.. any link????!!! Lol
I've got you! www.amazon.com/dp/B07R8XWW7W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Be warned, it ended up hazing the finish on my frame rails after having it on for about a year and a half. I pulled it off on the last wash and haven't put it back on until I get some sort of clear tape or something to protect it. It looks cool without anything on it but it sucks having zero storage haha
@@GearheadPhil thanks!! yea I would be putting some protection on the frame before installing.
@@heavyonthewrist2666 good luck with it!
70 foot pounds? Do you mean 17 foot pounds?
I think I said 17? I probably mumbled it in the video haha
He said 17ft lbs. I'll put money on it. Clean ur ears
@@virgilteman what?
@jeffreylonigro1382 he totally says 17 ft lbs go relisten to the video you will hear it.I rechecked because you're comment made me question it. So a group of us were hanging out and all 6 people heard it too.
@@virgilteman This time he said 171 foot pounds.
