"...its like trying to roll a 55 gal drum across the floor..." That has got to be one of the greatest analogies I have ever heard for this process. Man, thank you. The whole picture in my head changed when you said that line.
ive been welding professionally for 15 years, this guy is awesome great arc and pool control, its a pleasure to watch. i also use a tig finger and highly recommend it. Thanks for the lesson.
I'm not even a welder but this is one of the coolest videos I've ever seen. And if I didn't do what I do now (restoration) I'd definitely be a welder. From a marketing perspective, I also gotta give the guy credit. He positions his "commericals" in such a way they don't even seem like commercials. Nice work man.

Just thought id drop a line..just finished 1st year welding in Alberta, Canada. On the road to Journeyman welder. All the students love your videos that you have produced. My wife wanted to know what i wanted for christmas and I said a Tig finger, I have a great wife, she got me two of them. I didn't need anything else but the tig finger I told her. She wanted to know why the Tig finger was so important to me so I turned the electric stove on high then slide the Tig finger on laid it on top of the glass for five min pulled it off, slide my fingers out and had her slide her fingers in. she said know i now why you wanted this tool…Like the penguins of Madagascar said "nice and cool baby nice and cool!!!!"
I’ve been welding for over thirty years and I gotta say that tig finger is genius. I always took a larger gloves thumb and wrapped it around a glove that fits on the pinky, scorch the wrap so it becomes dry and slides on the material easier. Good work sir, I wish I had internet when I started in high school, I had to learn the hard way on my own.
I'm a Coded Welder for Aluminium, and i've never seen that trick before. Thanks for the tip. Great videos and thank you. I have two Welding videos on my page but no where near the quality of that, well the editing anyway, i have subscribed.
not coded, learned by keeping my mouth shut and paying attention. Built a chicken coop and weldedthe galvanized pipe to chicken wire with a 40 year old buggy rig . Even chickens impressed
I went thru Welding school in 1983 and remember the TIG process fondly. We called it "walking the dog" back then. I loved it when it left a pattern of the belly of a snake. I noticed the adjustable tig rig and instantly thought why didn't we have that back then. I don't know if it's a recent invention, but it would absolutely pay to have one of these. Good job on the video, good luck with the sales.
Not a welder myself but my good friend is. The tig finger is a perfect gift for him. I hope your sponsor sees that I bought one because of your video and even if they don't, thanks for sharing your craft with me and everyone else!
I recently moved up to tube welding out in the power plants and the TIG finger is a life saver. I dont have to search for a crappy strap or air hose to cut up anymore. Your products and videos are great.
Dam right, after I retired all the nice stuff came out. I am still welding at home on rail Buggy's and Roll Bars on 1 1/2" Chrome Molly I still have a small standard torch.
I use a TIG Finger and will not TIG pipe without it. Jody is a BEAST of a welder! He got me better on TIg just by showing CLEAR videos. Not a bunch of fireworks. Thanks man!
This video shows TIG welding off nicely. Gives anyone who doesnt know about this type of welding a clear picture of what its like and the skill needed to execute it properly, well done sir. XP
I really hope you make a living off these! Very in detail and informational videos, they should show these in welding schools, they are even fun to watch. You are a very intelligent man, good luck and keep up the great welding!
The Tig Finger and Tig Finger XL are the Left and Right guard against the heat rush...bought a load for the boys and girls at the welding school...became a popular man...recommended!

I'm 17 and started welding in my grade 9 started welding mild steel like most people, but now I am welding stainless steel and aluminum like a pro, tryout videos were like a second teacher to me :)
Finally, A welding video that's not full of negative comments. Most videos have the viewing audience that can always do it better. I don't think you can get much better than this even if your name is Mr. Roboto!!! lol
+David Hoover this guy is talking like a welder and and a welding engeneer. and he is welding like hes done it a million times. i just wish i had the money to invest in a place equipment and gear like that.
Great video. Just found this, wish I knew about your channel earlier. I'll be watching a lot of your stuff, will hold off on the questions until I get through a bunch. Thanks for doing this.
My welding instructor had a heat shield, but it wasn't very flexible. Your videos are amazing and i'm learning alot. I also bought 2 pairs of your tig fingers. One for me, and one for my journeyman.
I recently got a lincoln Viking and it is super nice. I also have a miller digital elite, a huntsman auto dark, jackson nexgen, a speedglas, and several others. right now I am using the Lincoln Viking more than others.
Love the video, for people who r trying to learn to weld u have the knack to keep peoples attention on the task at hand. I stumbled across this video and Walking The Cup caught my attention in the title. In the military i did metalworker/welder for my MOS training back in 1983. In 1985 i went to Tulsa Welding School, we had excellent instructors who were actually pipeline welders earlier in their career and thats where i heard the term Walking The Dog same as your walking the cup. It amazes me i havent heard that term since and i still weld and taught welding school for our local union hall and when i mention that term i get the deer in the headlight look. This is an awsome technique i still use today. Keep up the good work, im sure u have helped alot of begginners and experienced welders w your videos and from the comments u have inspired a few to take on welding as a new hobby or career. Peace
How do you know how deep your penetration is or does that just come with experience? Just starting out I want to know Im getting enough strength if that makes sense
Makes sense. So if I want to build a trailer frame stick welding would be the preferred method? What would you recommend for a welding machine that could do both or all 3 or is there issues trying to get it all in one package? Thanks again
+Jeff DeLuca you can get machines that do all 3 but they're not great. stick is the way to go with a trailer but you need to know what you're doing as its mostly done in position. 2.5mm gp rod @ about 70-80 amps should do the trick.
I Keep Telling People The Difference Between A Welder And A Master Welder Is About Twenty Five Years ,I As Well As Every One That Has Viewed Your Video's Can See You Have Put In Your Time Every Old Dog Can Still Learn A Lot From Show And Tell We Did That A Way Long Time Ago Ago In First Grade .Thanks For TheTime You Have Put Into Making Some Of Best Of The Best On RUclips.Keep .Your Stick On The Ice !
i used old stick welding gloves in school cut the middle finger off one or index works good if your need one on moments notice. ppl always wondered why i was like "hey can i have that old glove"
how are you getting such color in the welds we spent hours on one chunk of stainless and all we got was kinda copper color. what amps, gas, gas pressure, filler metal, tungsten, and stainless grade please get back to me
I'm doing metal work at school (vwo), my teacher does know how to get it. I can ask it for you brcause i saw him doing it a lot of times with that color what you mean;)
well we were using 1/4 inch 440 stain less from 60-220 amps and 8cfm-35cfm after super heating it we tried dipping it in oil and nothing. were are trying to get the color of the videos thumb nail all the blues. we got it once about an 1/8 inch of it no idea how and we tried replicating it and nothing.
It can be the temprature and air condition of your work station. This looks like overheated metal, so you can try it in a cold room;) my teacher get those colors, only i don't know how
please ask him because we were getting colors but just coppery type color but thats it. and temp was around low 70s high 60s when it was done. we werent using any filler metal either just root passes
You are one talented son of a gun... Got my tig finger and tshirts last week. Growing up on a farm I learned to stick weld early, then mig, and tig is fairly new to me. Your vids help me self teach like a pro!! Thanks so much!
im not a welder but I have taken some classes. you definitely have to throttle back and make sure everything you do is thought out and precise. all of you movements must be fluid and smooth. its a lot harder than it looks, to me at least. much cred to guys that are masters of their crafts!!
effumall especially make sure the I, U settings are correct, technique is proper considering what material you weld.. quite a lot of knowledge in preparation work before you even start welding..
My dad got me a tig finger, I was like "pfff, what the heck is this thing?!" Then I watched a couple of your vids and gave it a try. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! SO much easier, and better welds too!
i dont mean to be that guy.... but is your "tig finger" just exhaust header wrap? ive used the stuff to keep my starters from melting.... i study computer science in college, i turn wrenches because im too poor to have it done.... being poor makes you learn lol anyway, if it is.... thats a bad ass use for it.
I have been stealing....er I mean borrowing welding tricks for several years from youtube and this is the most professional instructor I have encountered. I do alot of low tollerance , precison parts for nuclear safety and military communications and this channel has saved me a shite load of time and aggravation. TY for what you do...btw , omw to order a tig finger (hot pinky nails suck)!!!
Been TIG welding for 30 years. not sure why I watched your vid but I liked it. You really don't need to show how good the Tig finger is I can see how good it will work and how versatile it can be. I just ordered a 2 pack & I know I will like it. Thanks
Jody, you need to open up a welding school or at least have a contest with the winner getting a few hours with you. Lotta guys can weld but very few can teach. You are the man.
You sir, are a phenomenal tradesman. I wish I could have apprenticed under someone with this kind of skill and love for teaching. Keep up the videos, and I'll be sure to purchase a tig finger! Much respect, from the oilsands of Alberta!
This guy is merely an adequate welder. I can tell by his instructions and terminology. I work along side welders who've forgotten as much as this guy knows. He's a backyard welder, self taught which is admirable enough, but not truly an elite craftsman.
Thanks so much for all the small details and the settings and setup. It really helps to take it from the video to the shop when you know the whole setup. Thanks again!
I really like the idea and concept behind "The Tig Finger". I have needed this in so many situations and just have never made anything to do this. What are they going for, and where can I find them at?
I can attest this is a good video for beginners to learn about walking the cup. I am a Union Pipefitter/welder, worked in a fab shop welding and fitting nothing but thin wall stainless(some heavy wall, some carbon, chrome, etc), a lot of 100% x ray welds....this is an informative one to get you started. As any pipe welder will tell you though, you'll end up taking this from that person, that from this person, and put it all together to make your own style.
Great vid Jodie I was wondering would you do a video of shed40 stainless pipe root fill and cap in 6g position I've to take a test on that soon I'd really appreciate it.
I apologize in advance for my ignorance as I know almost nothing about welding: Why, in one part, is he dragging the stick throughout, but in another, it shows the stick being pulled from the puddle each move? Is there a benefit/downside to one or the other?
The shots using the shaded lens so we can see the weld in action, is that in real time or has it been slowed. My tig welds hold great, but I can't get them to look very visually appealing.
Thanks for another GREAT video. And thanks for the little tig-finger ad. It reminded me I wanted one, and I went and bought me one! Keep up the GREAT work!
I bought a couple of TIG Fingers and just love them. They just lie on the welding table and when you need them, just slip it on. Sometimes I use two at a time. I like using them even when heat is not the issue as they slide along the metal really nice.
How hot were you running? I fix mig welds, divits, and pin holes and of course leaking tanks at my work. I usually like to keep my settings around 160 but occasionally depending on the circumstance I do go to 200.
Hello . What type of welding gives metal melting, given that there is no feeding wire?! And the grip is similar to this. It's not an electric arc welder? I saw this same head but without the feeding ladder as you do
Hey jody once again awesome vid my tig finger is still holding up great after pipe welding for 4-5 months just wondered if you would be able to to an indepth video on tig welding steel with silicone bronze particularly 1mm steel thanks a bunch your vids help apprentices like me! Ari - England
I'm currently doing my A ticket in B.C. and I'm learning about stainless. What we've learned is that when your stainless weld turns blue like that you are burning it too hot and the stainless has lost its stainless capabilities and is now regular carbon steel. I wasn't sure if you we're aware of that. But besides that, that is a really nice looking weld. Walking the cup is really nice on pipe but for me I prefer my stringer beads.
Can you help me? I am using a hobart 500521r welder for my car wash applications. And honestly I'm not having much luck. Mostly all metal is steel. What am I doing wrong here? Some metal is super thin. Like the track.. Over the years The wheel chemical has eaten away and made it thin. What can I do?
Joe, there is a link in the description box under the youtube video that looks something like welding-tv store. click it and you will see the options for different quantities. thanks very much for your interest
@weldingtipsandtricks hey jody just wondering what your take on torch wear's "x" finger that just came out.. seeing as your tigfinger has been in it for a while now , also hoping to get a tig finger shortly. love the videos as always cheers bud
Very, very good videos.. You are a very good teacher! ... What is the best way to avoid warpage? I have to weld 16 ga ss on a regular basis, and I have tried many techniques, though some methods reduce warpage, none completely eliminate it. Is there any way to reverse the effects of warpage? Thanks again for the great videos!!!
Very nice video production. Are you doing the editing? What kind of microphone are you using? Any filtering of audio in post-production? I don't find it surprising that your views are in the millions. Well done!
General Question on Tig steel/alum: Do you let off the amperage (pedal) between individual welds or do you keep it fairly constant throughout the entire weld?
That's a really good question. I have found it depends on quality (price) of your welding helmet, lighting in the work area, and your personal eyesight. If you wear spectacles, you need ones suitable for close up work.My everyday spectacles are ok for general use, but not good for very close work. Use a good faceshield with a clean protective cover over the lense. I would say that the video camera gives a much better view of the welding process, but then it might be my eyesight at fault!
beautiful weld joints... hey man... if i buy a tig machine can i build tool carriers?panel beating?,or this is just for thin sheet metal? i want to buy me a welder but i would like to include all the sizes and metals i can.. could this a tig welder be multiporpuose?
Would you weld something like this to reinforce the transition, or was this just for demo purposes to demonstrate a "socket weld" as if there had been two separate parts set up for welding? IF it is necessary to reinforce the machined fillet, could the machining be revised so that you would not need to weld, or is welding critical? Thanks, love the videos and already bought tig finger and t-shirt!
I miss welding heavier parts. After 26 yrs of welding I've migrated to aerospace welding. Some of our stuff is .020 aluminum and can get stressful. We have a nadcap audit thursday, such a over regulated agency. Nice welds.
Brilliant. Where can I buy the Finger thing? That is the hardest thing about trying to keep a solid base so that I can move. Being able to prop on a hot piece is very helpful.
"...its like trying to roll a 55 gal drum across the floor..." That has got to be one of the greatest analogies I have ever heard for this process. Man, thank you. The whole picture in my head changed when you said that line.
Damn. Im a mig/stick welder of 24 years and i can easily say your one of the best tig welders ive seen. Good job and illustrations.
ive been welding professionally for 15 years, this guy is awesome great arc and pool control, its a pleasure to watch. i also use a tig finger and highly recommend it.
Was thinking the same thing!!!
it's never too late to start. learn it as a hobby and you can probably incorporate it into your restoration services.
I know it's been 4 years buy you should start in a garage or something with a starter welder. I be you not to get an Everlast, as they are imports. Since they are imports, it is hard to find parts for it. I am getting an esab. They re cheaper than big brands like Miller, and there are parts for them all over the internet

welding is sewing for men. It really is.
painting with lightning and steel
+Peter Villa paint doesnt make a usable item.
Some things require painting to be usable. So painting does make a usable item, although probably more accurate to say it makes an item usable.

Are you aware that women make great welders ?
It's a fact !
They have a steadier hand & they actually know how to measure 8 inches.
I recently moved up to tube welding out in the power plants and the TIG finger is a life saver. I dont have to search for a crappy strap or air hose to cut up anymore. Your products and videos are great.
Nice torch wow tig welding has come a long way in 20 years.
Dam right, after I retired all the nice stuff came out. I am still welding at home on rail Buggy's and Roll Bars on 1 1/2" Chrome Molly I still have a small standard torch.

As others have said: "I wish I had a TIG welder"
I just bought a couple TIG fingers from your store and I'm 100% satisfied! Personally, I think every TIG welder needs TIG fingers in their shops.
never welded in my life! but these vids make me want to learn!!!
Did you ever learn ?

Beautiful welds. Very good video presentation, easy to understand and see which is super important in welding.

What is the wire size.??
@weldingtipsandtricks Just to be clear psi is pressure. Not to be confused with flow rate in cfh. With the 7/16 # 7 cup I used 15-20 cfh flow

You make it look so easy and the TIG Finger looks like a great idea, no more burnt fingers.
Does anyone know what the tig finger is made out of, I was just curious? Im going to order 2 soon once my school gets into tig welding open v groove.
It looks to be the same stuff they put on motorcyle mufflers
Most likely kevlar.
it is kevlar
i used old stick welding gloves in school cut the middle finger off one or index works good if your need one on moments notice.
ppl always wondered why i was like "hey can i have that old glove"

It's Kevlar.
Just received my TIG Finger XL... Very happy with the weight and quality of the material, can't wait to use it. Shipped in three days.

Not gunna lie, welding seems like it can be pretty Zen.
Oh it is, especially in the shop after hours with nobody else there
it is if you like working with your hands. i'm at my most relaxed when i weld.

too much lip smackin
haha, I was thinking the same thing!!! Gross!
Nice bead on the welding, Thanks for sharing
+Dave Haskell didnt notice, typically i would.
Fuck I know!!!

Man, I wish to hell you lived next door to me!!!!!!! Or vice-versa!!
My tig welds hold great, but I can't get them to look very visually appealing.
ordered my tig finger a few weeks ago. money well spent! thanks for all the videos.
Would like to know your opinion on a good all around mig welder? Like to weld :sheet metal, trailers, skids steer buckets etc..
Hi Jody do you know where I can get a table for the various settings you use on your Everlast welder for different thicknesses and materials?

Great photography of the weld pool. Thankyou. Positioning is everything. It sets the foundation for a rhythmic movement of the electrode.
when you are walking the cup, does the lip of the cup roll right over the recent weld?
What is the easiest type of welding to learn? And which is the most versatile for small at home projects?
I'm probably not the first to notice but 4:15 was probably the best looking "weld" ever!
How do you get the colours in your weld what settings depends for colours ?😊😊😊
Thanks, love the videos and already bought tig finger and t-shirt!
my mate who can weld (lvl 3 in sheet metal & welding in australia) says u a r a LORD!! he loves you
I miss welding heavier parts.
