All these old grounds had character and atmosphere. Not to mention their own unique appearance. All the new grounds look the same and have hardly any atmosphere. The annoying thing is that terraces didn’t need to be outlawed in the Taylor report, as terraces weren’t responsible for the disaster at Hillsborough. Police incompetence was the reason. It’s so sad to see all the old grounds disappearing.
As an away fan I thought it great It seemed large But even in the old fourth division with relatively low crowds it seemed intimate This was 1991. I would say it was intimidating also! I liked that though
I saw Rovers play at Ninian Park a few times; on the last occasion it was heart-breaking, as the result meant we dropped out of play-off contention despite having occupied one of the automatic promotion slots for most of that season. Aside from that, I saw Wales play Belarus there, and often went when Cardiff played matches on Friday nights - joining the hardcore fans in the 'Bob Bank' ( the stand with either the Captain Morgan Rum or Braces Bread adverts on the roof). There was a fantastic atmosphere in there and my mates had to keep quiet so their Bristolian accents weren't heard. No problem for me with my 'Estuary English' (having only lived here for 33 years, I've yet to pick up the local twang!). Been to watch Rovers away at The Cardiff City Stadium once; it's an Identikit modern ground with nowhere near as much atmosphere.
I remember that game where Bristol R missed out on the play-offs. Could be argued, they never looked like getting to that level since. Bristol Rovers fans gutted and, despite the rivalry, I felt for them a bit having been top 6 all season. Cardiff City FC is not even the same club that it was back then. The rebrand to red meant that, having seen the club go from Division 4 to the brink of the PL, having stood in crowds as low as 650 for the Leyland Daf Cup, and having seen them make cup finals - I called it a day. Ninian Park will take a lot of forgetting, to be fair, and whenever I think of being at a City game it is always the Bob Bank that is the place I first think of.
As a Cardiff fan for over 50 years I really miss Ninian park. Fantastic atmosphere when it was full. I really don't like the new stadium. Really soulless. I was there for Wales v Scotland. Gutted we lost 2-1. Rip Jock stien. Cymru 🏴
Very enjoyable these history of grounds videos. And as someone already mentioned in the Baseball Ground video, the tour of Northern England, Belfast and Canada, with your accent is fascinating. I'm from Gateshead. You must work the bus route from Boro to Ashington.
No much people know but if you have ever heard of Fred keenor. Well your reading his great great grandsons comment! Don’t believe me? Well I don’t believe myself either but we are related!
@@historyoffootball87 just come across your channel great one aswell think oldham one of the oldest ex premier league stadium should do one on us mate 👍
Some great videos In this series, would love to see one on Boothferry Park as it had a few interesting points (it’s own railway station being one) Also, I believe Southend used to play at a stadium that had some sort of theme park attached, so that may be an interesting one to look into.
You should do one of Gamla Ullevi (Gothenburg, Sweden). Classic ground, and the new stadium is built at the very same spot, sadly with the same name as the old one.
@@historyoffootball87 I remember the cup game in 2001/02 when it all kicked off and Sam Hammam was marching round the pitch geeing up the crowd as if they needed anymore geeing up
By what metric is this a "forgotten ground"? This will not be the case until everyone who ever attended is no longer with us. I know the prevailing opinion is that football was invented with the Premier league, but please know your football history.
The forgotten part is more a clickbait thing than anything. Also younger generations would know about these grounds and the media rarely mentions the old grounds anymore either.
Never forgotten by older bluebird fans, Ninian Park will always be Cardiff City to me and oh those memories
Thanks for watching the video

Most new grounds all look the same. The Stadiums for the Qatar World Cup, I cannot tell them apart.

Great video. I had some great times in Ninian Park between my 1st game there in 1994 up until the closure.
Cheers, thanks for watching
Scary away ground was Ninian Park. Great vids btw buddy.

Would be great to see one on Griffin Park

Yes - they used to play at The Kursal (which still exists) on the seafront.
There was a pop group called 'The Kursal Flyers' in the 1970's.
Would love to see you do a video on Eastville Stadium, former home of Bristol Rovers.
I will do that one eventually
Good series. Try and do one of the Vetch Field, Swansea.
I will get around to doing it.
Would like to see a video on Belle Vue, Doncaster Rovers old ground.
When I think of Belle Vue, I think of Wakefield Trinitys home ground but I could do a video on it.
Ninian park had lietchien type roof

@@historyoffootball87 top man. An Interesting history with rivals groundsharing, periods where it wasnt used aso.
I was actually at that game in 1985. Wales vs Scotland. Sad day. Think it ended 1-1. Al ex Ferguson took over as Scotland manager.
It did finish 1-1
It did. It meant Scotland qualified for the 1986 World Cup. Davie Cooper scored the equaliser for Scotland, a penalty. Such a sad night.
I was there that day
Can you do the old den at some point mate
I will do it
