That was a 1970. You can tell because the turn signals were round and in the bumper. The 71 had rectangular ones in the bumper and 72 had them next to the headlight.

Nice video and discussion. I have owned the #2 hero car for over 10 years (bought from original owner after Universal after seeing it advertised online). It had the 509 during filming, but was sold with a 454 in it with 3.70 gears in a spool (has Richmond T10 4 speed). I could tell from stopping the video that my car was used to hit the toilet (and I am sure also the pallets of construction materials). I am keeping it original so has no wipers, signals, or side glass. It is fun to take to shows and cruise-ins. Folks either recognize it right away or think I am working on it of course. It still had dirt race tires from filming on it when I got it, so I put street tires on (8" front, 10" rear).

They used 70-72 Montes to make the 7 or 8 up to all look pretty much like a 70 (hence the bumper/signals style) but I think they used like 72 grills. There is a tubular frame welded behind the grill in mine to protect the radiator@@CajunNightFury

My dad owned a 71 Monte Carlo.
It was the first generation of emission filled muscle cars. It had the 454 but it only had 360hp from the factory. Compared to the Chevelle at the time with the same engine making over 450hp.
I honestly would have preferred to see him in a ss nova. Way less known today and far more of a presence on screen.
There used to be copy of the monte carlo at world of wheels in Calgary. They also had an original general lee set cars, and one of the few licensed remakes of Elenore.

This car also came available with a small block 400, but it wouldn't have had near the power that the big block would have as long as it wasn't detuned because of emissions, which most of them were after 1971, which was a significant decrease in power!

I don't think any classic muscle car or classic vehicle of that caliber should ever be sacrificed like that for any scene for a movie. I understand when they did it a lot in the seventies and eighties but there was an abundance of them, now there's not so many.
Like how many Chargers were destroyed in the Dukes of Hazzard and how many Firebirds on Knight Rider geez.

So it has the wrong front bumper if it if a 1971. The 1970 had the round turn signals in the bumper. The 1971 had rectangle trun signals in the bumper and the last year of this body for the Monte Carlo in 1972 they moved the turn signals to next to the grill so the 1972 had no holes in the bumper for the turn signals.

Somebody's got their facts WRONG somewhere. I can tell you with absolute certainty, have driven several powerful cars north of 100 mph, that either of the two big engine cars would NOT top out at 140 mph. More like 150 to 170 mph UNLESS they were power limited on top end in some way. One of my old cars, a 1972 LTD with a bone stock 351 Cleveland engine at 165 factory horsepower would bury the needle past the 135mph on the factory speedometer and i went there a few times. By seat of pants feel i estimate 140-145 mph and that wasn't even maxed out, about 95-98 percent of throttle travel. Loved that car.

actually the viper was hmmm, yeah the car, its motor is a 360 V8 like they used in the little red express truck modified to have two extra cylinders for possible truck use, hence the prototype motor thing, and the guy who actually designed it, or atleast refined it was a Chevy Pontiac Man, so it kinda makes sense that both would have similar power outputs given where they come from
the difference was is the viper was an attempt to make a european style muscle car on a budget that could handle, and they took the motor to lamborghini to cast it out of aluminum, given they had been doing that with literally all of their motors for a very long time
problem was they oversized the tires so they didnt put enough pressure down to keep grip, and the engines just had too much torque for the tire technology of the day
and also in some cases made the chassis too stiff to handle so it road like an old 440 muscle car buckboard
the monte however is a cruiser, a Medium to Large V8 with a soft suspension, so you kinda got this weird dichotomy, too hard too fast, too slow and too smooth, till you hotrodded the crap out of it.
hell even back then when the movie came out I remember seeing some of them around on the cheap, just kinda rigged up like that car, they were good machines that were often just run into the ground until getting replaced by some of the worst GM plastic fantastic available
as sadly I think I saw the last era of kids in highschool having access to this kinda muscle on the cheap.
