if someone says this is not good performance i don't understand what drugs they are in. 4:00 onwards is pretty much only possible in studio and all the decisions to break lines short are made so he can recover from vocal strain to be able to hit the more important stuff perfectly for example the 2nd scream before 4:20 is completely deleted so he could hit the high note. its impossible to do with strain that comes from screaming.
Thanks for the video! I never gave a listen to Tesseract before this album and Legion is my absolute favorite track! So happy to see Dan pulling it off in a live show, I'm such a fan
Absolutely! Its been a pleasure to see these guys grow over the years both in the studio and on stage. I wouldve gotten the chance to see them for the first time if i wasnt out of state in november. PAIN. Anyway, also just wanted to say thank you for taking such a good video of the performance. Cheers!
To me, Dan has always been that one singer that took the progressive metal world by storm, not only his vocals were something new, fresh and totally unheard of at the time, but he also managed to create a consistent library of albums, usually one (sometimes two or THREE) per year, such as The Valediction of Verse (2008) with Piano, Atlantic (2009) with First Signs Of Frost, Concealing Fate (2010) and One (2011) with TesseracT, Twenty Twelve (2012) with Haji's Kitchen, August Earth (2012) by Absent Hearts, Blinding White Noise (2012) with Skyharbor, One Thousand Wings (2013) with WMBB, and finally Salvage Architecture (2014) with Piano, and Guiding Lights (2014) with Skyharbor. Then, 2015 came, and.. Dan wasn't the same anymore. Something about his voice was missing, like his timbre or the color of his voice wasn't the same, his chest voice had almost remained unused for years, and his emotional, heart wrenching vocal lines were somehow restrictive, as if he was being hesitant. How??? After all those phenomenal works he had put out, why was he holding himself back? What was holding him back? Was it a matter of age? Was it a contractual thing? I'll never know, but one thing was certain, he voice wasn't the same. Now, by NO MEANS I am saying his works since 2015 are "bad"(no f'in way, I loved Atone with WMBB and Zeta, they're GOOD), but this wasn't the Dan that "shook the world by storm" back in the day. It's like that Doggo meme in which you have a muscle headed dog vs a smaller, chubby dog (they're supposed to represent the same person but in a past vs present sort of way), that's what Daniel felt to me for about 8 years (and I'm positive I'm not the only one, especially among the people where I come from). Now, that has changed. THIS right here, and their newest War Of Being album is a representation of everything I know he's capable of AND MORE. This is the Dan I knew and grew up with, and you bet your ass I'm glad he's back. This feels like One, Blinding White Noise, Salvage Architecture, and all of the greatest vocal works he has put out packed inside one single album, accepting and becoming one with the past.
That was a great read, and honestly, I agree with you! I think many other tesseract fans would also agree. I really feel strongly than Dan has really dug deep for this new album and touring cycle, he just has that edge again!
Yooo thanks for posting this man. I'm seeing them live in SF and can't wait to see legion live. I watched Dan practice it on stream a bunch and he did such a phenomenal job here. The heathens note always sends me to fking Valhalla
Such a great part of the song. I love when there is a single moment everyone looks forward to in a song! Makes it have a huge emphasis in a live setting!
As much as I wanted to be up front, I knew in order to really enjoy the sound I needed to back up! I started in the middle of the pit and slipped out before they started! But I would’ve loved to be up close too! Give and a take lol.
I’m seeing them in Dallas next month. GOD I hope they play this. So hyped to see em. Absolutely INCREDIBLE live. Love it when bands sound almost identical to album, because that tells me they don’t need much editing. Super talented.
To be fair, I’ve noticed that in even some of their biggest shows in the UK. But I think this is just one of those bands that you kinda just bob to and say to yer self “oh hell yea”. Tho I will say doing almost all new stuff and not even doing of matter or even just concealing fate in its entirety feels incredibly empty in their setlist and would have fixed the crowd if they played those. I get promoting your new album but there’s not much in their set for long term fans that warrants moving
Yeah he held back/skipped a couple lines but it’s pretty understandable live and after a bunch of other songs. He will probably get more used to it over time
@@flataffect I noticed he chose the lower octave on a chorus in echoes as well, but then chose to sing the more difficult part like record lol, I think he just makes different choices depending on how he’s feeling that night. Overall was a great performance for him
@@peytonpepper12 yeah, I imagine it’s in the moment decisions for a lot of it. Maybe not for legion cause it’s basically a solo. I’m a singer so I get it, you don’t wanna push when ur on tour just for the sake of it and risk ur voice. I might see them live in Vancouver. Worth seeing then??

@@Taiwanesedave it's far from being the highest notes Dan sings in any Tesseract song (I'm excluding the falsettos from that comparison). I understand it's a conscious decision, but won't say it did justice to the song
According to Dan, this is one of the most exhausting TesseracT songs, and he's still working on mastering the breath control needed to do it justice. But I get the disappointment of him ducking notes, especially when he's such a standout force in the band. Perhaps he just didn't have it in him that night -- performing live is a different beast entirely.

I agree, it would be great for him to sing it exactly like the record. But in the same sense, I understand he’s trying to play it smart and preserve his voice for the whole tour. This song is incredibly difficult to sing, and Dan is getting up there in age. I fully believe he's a better vocalist now than he's ever been, but I'm also aware that he's much more susceptible to damaging his voice now (due to being older) than he was during those early Tesseract/Skyharbour years. He can't go all in every single night, especially for this specific track
